View Full Version : Why is voice command unpopular?

Hi All,
Lack of forum search hits on voice command tells me it's not used.
Is it because 50% of the commands are sub menus that don't have keyboard mappings?
I would rather use a voice command utility that I can move to other sims.
All voice utilities are from the windows 98 era?

Welcome Aboard Herr Kaluen!! :arrgh!:
Actually last VC I knew of was AoD (Aces of the Deep) circa 95ish and was for Windows 95. And it never worked right..for me anyways. :hmmm:
I think it was available in Bridge Commander, for you fellow Star Trek fans, in about 2000-2001. Never tried it, myself, so who knows how well it worked? You'd think it'd be pretty involving. Verbally commanding, "ahead flank" or "warp factor eight," and having it work, would be...all kinds of awesome.

Think of VC on your cellphone...
"Call Debbie"
"Did you say Call Dorothy?"
Sooo..
"Surface!"
"Did you say Dive!"

I don't know. If they had a training part, where you would have to say each command one by one so it recognizes your voice, it would actually work.
Just like with the Vista program, that lets you use your voice to do certain things, or Rosetta stone.
I think its more along the lines of, because its had a bad history, people seem to shy away from it.
Plus, most people dont want to look like a dork talking to the computer. lol

I used to be quite enthusiastic about Game Commander, a voice app that you can "train" -- and I used it to run SH3 with German commands. Eventually I felt it was more trouble than it was worth. It required that I use the headset instead of my speakers, because of the constant risk of the crew voices triggering commands (even loud sound effects could be interpreted as commands!)

i have used "shoot" with some fairly high degree of success in the past... however i have found that it is a lot faster for me to just click the icons and speed telegraph and push keyboard keys.

Thanks for the input.
I'll avoid it due to complexity and weird factor when discussing with friends.
From "40 year old virgin" reference.
You know how I know your gay? When you set up voice command and talk to your games?????

I have used voice commands very effectively with flight combat sims where I fly strictly in-cockpit. If you "push to talk" or key the mic you will get excellent response over an 'open mic'. Yes, it adds to the immersion and for hard to find keys it if fantastic IMHO. It works well in MP with select commands. Whatever floats your boat!

thats where i have had the most success with voice command stuff.
I had a lot of custom voice commands set up for my combat flight simulator, and i almost never had to repeat my commands.
it was a lot of fun saying something like "Red Section Attack the Bombers." and those wingmen would respond and peel off and go to work. then "Blue Section Attack Fighters." and they would peel off and go after the fighters. just for example.
that way you dont have to go looking for keyboard combination mid fight because some of those air battles can be fast paced - you never have to go "heads down"

I use my own customized 'version' of SH3Speech, and I love it. There is a thread for it somewhere on the forum (maybe the mods forum). I could never get the commands that required movement of the mouse to work properly, so I just eliminated all those commands. The ones that control key strokes work great. Using SetKeys, I was able to add a few more to my taste. Mind you, it does take some time to figure out how to successfully modify the program commands, and to get the Microsoft speech recognition engine up and running, and to train the speech recognition to recognize your commands, but it's well worth it. I'd say I can control 80 - 90% of the normal routine on the boat with my voice.

Technically of course, this is a request not a command. Note the use of the words "Will you..." :DL I have tried omitting those words altogether and employing a movie-style WWII German officer tone of voice, which has had the effect of reducing me to preparing my own meals all damn week and an almost total curtailment of bedroom activity (unless you count changing the sheets & pillow-cases ) At least I am now experiencing to the full the joys of life á la U-Boot crews on patrol! :haha:

I recently discovered VR Commander voice recognition software, link (http://www.vrcommander.com/), and I love it! It's got a simple interface and lets you create your own profiles to use voice commands to activate keystrokes and macros. Best of all, it uses its own built-in voice recognition engine (which works extremely well and doesn’t need training) and doesn't require Microsoft's SR. The only downside is it's $10 to buy a full license (though you can try it for 15 days free).
I've got it working for other games like Battlefield 1942 (yes I'm old school), but for some reason it doesn't work with SH3. It runs in the background like it should while the game is running, but I say a command and SH3 doesn't respond at all. And yes I'm sure VR Commander is working - tested in notepad that the commands are activating keys, etc.
I'm thinking it's something to do with either 1) SH3's Commands_en config file using "virtual key codes" (such as 0x33 for "3") instead of standard key codes or 2) DirectX not allowing the simulated keystrokes into the game - something about order of inputs.
If anyone out there, like me, finds VR Commander so good that it's worth getting it working with SH3, I'd appreciate the help.

I can't afford to live alone. The last thing roommates need is to hear one of them shouting at the computer all the time.:dead:
Things have changed since AOD and CFS! I use VAC very successfully. The good thing is that it allows to set up a bunch of different phrases for a particular command, so I don't have to remember the exact phrase. It utilizes Win7 native speech recognition and works extremely well! Nothing beats "Rohr 1 ......... LOS!" :yeah:
This is the benefit of having a better half with her own appartment next door! LOL!
With now three different sub sims I don't have to memorize the key commands any more. I have set up the same phrases but with their corresponding keystrokes for each game. And by using macros giving commands via speech recognition is more effective than using the mouse.
The last thing roommates need is to hear one of them shouting at the computer all the time.
Like no one ever does that anyway! At least with speech recognition the computer will understand what you're shouting at it. :D
If they have a problem with you talking to the computer, set up a nice demonstration of what you're doing with it. I impressed heck out of my son once when I navigated into port and right up to the dock and stopped using nothing but voice commands.
I've had great luck with the free utility Shoot 1.6.4 and some time training the speech recognition software. I generally get well over 95% recognition rate, and have only seen one command interpreted incorrectly ("periscope" became "up periscope"). Mostly you have to get the timing on the push-to-talk key right. There are multiple voice commands for each command, and you can change them easily.
I spent so much time using voice commands that I forgot all the normal key commands and had to look them up when I broke my mic one day.
If anyone wants to try Shoot 1.6.4, there's a change to the config file to fix a problem with newer versions of NET and it's not easy to find the right file. Let me know and I'll post the new one.
