I had that problem after installing the Different Smoke for Merchants and Warships mod. It went away when I uninstalled it.

What are your specs. I've never seen that with stock or any mod's that I run. Not sure what your card it, but my old 6600 did that on sh3. Also, what are your in game graphics settings...they all turned up?

That happens when you have some mod problems. Basically the game is trying to use some graphics files that are not located where they should be / have been removed since and the only way the game engine can deal with it, is to use a solid block of colour, as it can't find the graphic to use. I've only ever seen this when people have corrupted mods, or have removed some graphics files from their SH4 directory. If you still can't get it to work, try looking at the dates on your materials.dat and particles.dat files to see if they are being overwritten when you reinstall. They are the files that will cause that problem, if you have a partially installed mod.
