Nautilus42 made a ship with a rocket launcher, maybe we could implement it in the IJN Campaign in 2 types if he agrees to let us use it:

Surface to Air

They Had the latter in 1944 aboard their capital ships and reported that they worked well :

The way I had designed the launcher was to be surface to surface. I didn't really think it would work well trying to attack an aircraft with it.


Do you have any clue as how to make such rockets ?

The ones the IJN had would fire straight in the air and explode at a set altitude, Carriers had them, so did theirs largest ships.

if there are air to ship rockets in FOTRS there should be ship to air rockets in the IJN Campaign Mod ;)

Well how to make them explode in mid-air I'm not sure if there's a way to do that with the conventional amunition. However I can take a look at the depth charges and see how they are detonated. Maybe those could be used if they can be worked with.

If the IJN just went to a certain height as Keltos says, couldn't they be made as AA shells which don't need to hit anything to explode?

that would be good enough wouldn't it ?

the thing to take into account is the explosive charge of the rockets and change the shell accordingly, it should do more damage :)

can we link a smoke trail effect to really make it look like MLRS fring ?

Hi Keltos,

i have a some questions about these Rockets.

Against which Targets are they used ? Ships or Planes ?
It should not be an problem to make them fly against ships ore planes.
You can find all things you need in the Mod ive made for you.

If they should explode in the Air, declare them as AA Munition.
The Trailsmoke is already done in the Rockets for the US-Planes.
You can Copy the Nodes with S3D to your new Rocket-modell.

I declared the Rockets from the planes as AA-guns, so they shoot in a short Range.
If they should fired from a long distance, you must declare them as an Maingun.
If you will send me the 3D Modells, i can make them run for you.

some should : the ones that equip (will equip) the carriers at the end of the war, you should use that too btw !

Hi Mate,

its done, only the animated Sailer should be added to the Rocketlauncher but i think i got it today.
Now they are declared as an AA Gun and they shoot in a range wich is declared in the CFG-File for AA-Guns.
The Shells are AA-Shells, they explode in the Air but the Rockets are not fast enough to hit an fast fighter-plane.
You can make the Rockets faster but thats looks horrible.

I will post some Pics in the next posting !

Hiho,

so here you can see the first try of these Rockets and the Launcher.

I took the Rocketrack from the Planes and mounted it on an Gunnerplatform.
I think thats not the right Design but this is easy reworked.

After first testing i declared the Launcher ans an Cannon.
Now they are firing over long distance against planes and other Vessel.

Testing against my own sub i will do in few minutes.
The problem is here that a need a small vessel only with this launcher to find out the damage-rate of these Rockets.

oh yes, i tryed out against one Minesweeper, normaly a poor target for my sub but now he is blown me out of water.

I reworked the damagepower of the Rocketshells a bit and now you can take some hits from them but it is better to dive cause if they hit your Periskope, it is gone very fast.

I have made a small package for you wich you can enable behind the mod ive send to you yesterday.
There is an second singlemission where you can drive one US-Sub against the poor japanese Minesweeper for testing out the demolition on your sub.

You will find it in a few minutes in your PM !

I wonder it those rockets could've changed the fate of a few ships had they come earlier ?

it sure as hell didn't save the Ise Battleship ! I saw a 1945 color documentary movie on youtube :

In stock game an AI ship will launch Hedgehogs, I don't know if a playable ship will. I know, forgot I put a ship in with them on it and got blasted when testing part of the Campaign.

and it's not a modified shell that you don't see, you actually see the rocket falling ! and AI ships can target either ships or aircrafts with it.

Tests were conducted in May/June of 1942 using a standard army issue Wurfgerat 41 launcher and rockets from 21 to 30cm. The tests proved that it was not only feasable, but that the rockets could be fired from depths up to 15 meters below the surface, without effecting the normal flight path.


In the summer of 1944, three U-Boats of the Black Sea 30th flotilla were secretly equipped with rocket launchers. These were mounted midships below the waterline of U-24 and U-9 and on the deck of U-19. The weapons were allegedly deployed against Soviet harbor facilities and moored ships during the German retreat. so the IJN had the sub which had fired the first rockets from under the water

This is OT, but something I always wanted was weapon a merchant ship would fire that would drop DCs.

In RL, when attacked, many merchants had DCs aboard, then they'd sort of roll them off wily nily.

It would be cool to do for atmosphere. Trouble is that I could do this with a gun, but the ship will only fire if it sees the sub. I want something more like a flare, or maybe trigger it to the ship alarms that go off...
