* * * NOTE * * * I have also released this mod for SH4 1.5 Stock and GFO

Link: http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/showthread.php?t=158946

F.S.S. is a mod that adds the conning tower background to the Attack scope and Night (observation) scope views, because I never liked the black background periscope views in the stock game. There are 2 versions available, one for RFB and the other works on TMO, and FOTRS. This mod is JSGME compatible. No known issues.

I just installed the RFB version, even though I don't have RFB installed, and it works fine. Looks great too.

Even though it appears one isn't necessary, why didn't you make a stock version?

Thanks for the kind words on the mod. I'm glad you like it. As far as a stock version is concerned, you can download either mod version, but the stock game only has 1 periscope mask, so all you'll get is the attack scope view no matter which scope you use. I'm sure there is someone out there smart enough to add the night (observation) scope mask to the stock game, but that person is not me. If you can figure it out, go ahead and package this mod with it and release it as a separate mod.

Now all I need to do is figure out how to make a super cool signature graphic like the rest of you guys have :DL

OK, I made them a bit bigger, but a good marketing tactic, you give them just a little taste. It increases the "WOW" factor after someone downloads the mod, and sees the actual size for the first time.

Oh yeah, I never thought about it. Let me take a stab at it, and I'll let you know.

i havent had a chance to try it yet but its a great idea and it looks to be nicely done :up:

for a long time many people have complained about the ghosting of images coming through the black background of scope views and it looks like this mod cures that. :yeah:

OK guys, Uboat version is up and running. The download links are up in the first post.

I'm running GFO, which might be the same as stock but with different numbers here. Here is where you change the ObsScope.

[G2B I140] - This 'I' number might be different but it should be in the [G2B....] section
Name=BackgroundWithWhole
Type=1030;Static bmp
ItemID=0x2B000001
ParentID=0x2B000000
Pos=0,0,1024,768

Color=0xFFFFFFFF
Materials=1
Display=2;Linear
Mat 0=data/menu/skins/american/gui/layout/periscope_mask_1024.tga ---->>> Change this file to the Obscope filename. A DDS file is OK

Yep, talking about greenish (night) hue for US and brown (day) for GER and there's weird blue stripe on the top of the screen for GER day.
Also, the graphics outside the scope does not change to red during the night.

I wonder what is causing this?

Vanjast - I understand what your trying to tell me about the menu_1024 file, but like I said, I'm only a hack modder that can only manipulate dds files. If there is anyone out there that wants to make a mod that adds the observation scope view into the stock/GFO versions and add my mods with it, be my guest.

Conus and rsvette - if you look at the screen shots in the first post you'll notice the day/night backgrounds are different, thats because your standing behind a different scope, (attack/opservation). Again, because the stock version only uses 1 periscope mask, (TMO-RFB-FOTRS versions use 2 different scope masks) your only seeing the same scope mask with different lighting, (day/night) no matter what scope you use. Sorry.

Conus - regarding the stripe at the top of the screen. I admit I cut the Uboat masks a little short. You got your resolution cranked so high, your viewing area extends past the edge of the mask. Try reducing your resolution a bit, and that should do the trick.

This is a fantastic mod and I can't imagine not having it now. Spectacular idea and implimentation.

I was wondering though.....

Would it be possible (I don't even know if it is)... to have the background pan around as the periscope is panning around?

If you are at 0 degrees everything is perfect; the background around the periscope makes sense for looking directly ahead. But.. as the periscope pans left/right; the background remains exactly the same.

It's probably one of those things that would be insane to try and fix; but I don't know; is it even possible?

I can't belive I've played this game for so long and still find myself holding my breath and forgetting to blink. (laugh)

Again; Fantastic job on this mod, brilliant !

Will it work ?

Again, thanks for the kind words regarding this mod :DL. I thought I should give a little history lesson about it's origins, because the original idea is not mine :oops:. I stumbled across a mod called New_periscope by Kapt Klaus uploaded back in July of 2007. What I didn't like, it was only for the attack scope, and nothing for the night (observation) scope :damn:. Then I started using the green filter (from ArcLight's OPCF mod) for night attacks with the observation scope. I emailed Kapt Klaus to see if he could incorporate the green filtered night scope with the same background only with a red tint for "darken ship" :arrgh!:. He replied and said he was not modding for SH4 anymore because he was working/playing on another game. Although I have seen some recent posts from him, Welcome back Kapt Klaus. So with allot of trial and error, I was able to recreate it myself. Basically, all I did was take a screen shot standing in front of the periscope in the conning tower, then cut a hole out the same size as the periscope optic, then paste the two together :smug:.

McHub - I would love to have that myself, (that was also brought up in the "New Periscope" mod topic), except your talkin to the wrong guy. That would involve 3d modeling, and that's all a mystery to me :hmmm:. Maybe one of the modder elite dudes will pick up on this and inspire them to try it.

Mr. donut - As far as I know, it should work with FORTS 1.4. This mod is only 2 files. Just make sure the file names and paths are the same:salute:.
