Early hours of June 8th I received orders that released me temporarily from command of the delta IV class submarine Bryansk, my orders were to instead report to the Baltic fleet head quarters St Petersburg for my next assignment.

As with all orders that contained the words released from command I was slightly sceptical that I would return as it is soviet nature to not inform the person directly as to make them scared.

Naturally I followed the orders to hand reporting to the head quarters on the 10th, it was then in that meeting in the dark and dingy office with five top ranking officers in the navy I learnt my next assignment.

After what seemed like an eternity it was settled and the mission was to begin on the 22nd, my submarine the Bryansk was taken in for overhaul and maintenance as a gesture for my agreement to complete this mission.

On the 22nd we departed the harbour on the neva river the boats numbers were painted out and the crew hand picked for the assignment, there was no send off ceremony just the dockside workers and the admiral.

We dived the submarine as soon as we got to deep enough waters, our mission was not to be seen so coming to the surface or even surface running was completely out lawed.

After four days we headed through the Kattegat the straight the divides Norway and Sweden from Denmark, it had been a place where ships had been spotted before such as Bismarck and her escort, with new advances in radar technology the submarine would be easily found on the surface and had no means of defence we remained submerged.

Two days more and we had already reached the coast of England this is where the mission started, our objective is to sneak inside the royal navy’s most prestigious port the home of the royal navy at Portsmouth and gather vital intelligence on ships movements’ radio transmit ions and any ships in the area.

If only I had a nuclear submarine, I was assigned the command of one of the Baltic fleets kilo class diesel submarines with 48 of the hand picked crew, I decided along with the executive officer to make a dusk entrance masked by another ship also entering the port that night.
True to form the merchant ship started his run to the harbour I tagged along underneath, the water was very shallow and any wrong move could either ground us or strike the other ship.
Eventually the merchant pulled off heading up river to berth leaving us exposed in the harbour in shallow waters.

The ship had brought us in too far and I was dangerously close to other naval vessels if it all went wrong I would be exposed and this whole mission and its crew would be put at risk, I raised the scope and took a few pictures before moving closer to a docked ship.

We had come this far so I ceased the opportunity to grab all the information I could we were only tasked to be inside the British waters for a few hours, upon leaving the port we had to dispose of all sensitive paper work we had already spotted the patrolling FFG at the harbour entrance but now it was about getting out without getting caught.

Our battery is down to 50% the CO2 is up I had to leave, dawn broke to reveal the isle of white and international waters we were homeward bound, as soon as we passed the Dover straight I raised the schnorkel and flashed a message the mission was over.
