A few years ago (3) i put in a mod that allowed me to turn the u-boat w/o always making a hard rite or left.Once i pushed the key to turn,it would turn the boat but when i released the key it automatically went back to the "0" position or straight either way.Anyone know about this?

Hi kaizerkat,
I recollect a long while back a mod that did this. I think it combined 2 commands turn Port (or Starboard) and Amidships that was on key repeat. The crew voice was deleted to stop annoying repeating. I can't remember what this mod was called.

Are you not referring to the emergency manouvre key? :hmmm:

To all thanks for the response.I don't recall either, but i believe it's a simple file tweak i just don't know which file. It's a great tweak which makes steering the u-boat better especially when manuvering in tight places.

I've found the mod its called "Easy_sub_control_v0.9" by snider
Here's the bit about the rudder control in the Readme.
---------------------------------------------------------------------
Hold keys:
The key configuration also uses A and D as hold keys for turning your submarine left and right, and by that I mean that when you hold down A the sub will turn left at 40 degrees.
Hold keys was not originally implemented in SH3, and cannot be gracefully implemented for all functions (such as diving), but I managed to implement them for the "Rudder full port" and "Rudder full starboard" commands.
The way I've done this follows (ie. only interesting for modders).
If the key config defines a key to be repeated, it will execute the key's command continuously as long as you hold it down. If a key config defines a key to be performed by the crew, there will be a slight delay before the command is executed, and there will be a spoken line from the officer performing the task.
If the key config defines a key to be repeated, and performed by the crew, the command will be continuously executed, with a delay.
What I've done, is set the keys for "Rudder full port/starboard" to A (repeat) and D (repeat). The command "Rudder amidship" is set to A (Repeat, Crew) and D (Repeat, Crew). So when you hold A or D, SH3 will repeat the "Rudder full ..." command much more often than it will repeat the "Rudder amidship" command. That achieves the functionality of turning while holding down A or D. Pretty slick, eh?
But theres a problem, cause since the "Rudder amidship" keys are defined to be performed by the crew, the CE officer will continuously repeat "Rudder zero degrees" as the keys are held. And the line "CE: Rudder amidship" will appear in the message window.
To fix the latter problem, I edited menu_en.txt to display "CE: Turning" instead. I'm unable to get rid the message completely.
To fix the first problem, I modified the CE officer character action file (data\Library\CH.dat), to say 'NoOne_0_end.ogg' (which doesn't exist) instead of "zero", and to say 'ChE_x_Empty11.ogg' (which doesn't exist either) instead of "degrees". You can see these places (about 20 of them), if you look in CH.dat. Well, since the CH.dat I modified came from patch 1.4b, I'm pretty sure it will break the sound of any other version of SH3. Feel free to make a non-1.4b version of this mod yourself, all you need is a good hex editor :)
Note that I did not replace the word "Rudder", since this would have removed the delay and made the "CE: Turning" message appear twenty times a second(!). Instead, I replaced the ChE_x_Rudder.ogg sound files with a soundless Ogg Vorbis file.
So the three annoying things you might notice about the hold keys are
1) The message "CE: Turning" will continously appear in the message window while turning.
2) The CE officer no longer says "Rudder" when you set the rudder dial, only "xx degrees to ...".
3) The CE officer will continously lipsynch the empty Ogg sound, while you're holding down the A or D key.
But those issues, I consider small things, since I can now hold down A and D to turn while blasting with the deck gun. And that's all I wanted :)

I just checked out snider's old post (from 2005). It's too bad his download link is dead and I haven't seen any working links posted elsewhere.
This mod would be especially useful with Mikhayl's S-Boot mod, where steering a high-speed torpedo boat just isn't very practical using normal u-boat controls when you're making an attack run. The "Easy sub control" mod would make steering feel more like using a gamepad or joystick.
In fact, you probably could map the 'A' and 'D' keys to a game controller's X-axis, the gun elevation to the Y-axis, fire with the trigger, and set the torpedo launch to another controller button.
It might be a good idea to mention this to Mikhayl and asanovic before they finish work on the S-Boot update. This would give one of them the chance to include this steering method into the update.
Anyone got a working download link or still has this mod so they could upload it for anyone interested?

Thanks for the upload.
When i enabled this in the mod enabler i got this warning: "en_menu.txt" has already been altered by the "GWX - Alternative Flotillas" mod.
This is because the mod will change the keys right? So it should still be okay to use with GWX 3?

This mod has NOT been tested with GWX 3.0
I did the alternate uploads to get it out there.
I did a qick look at the read me files
but have not compared it to GWX 3.0 files.
Use it at your own risk for now!
Whatever you do?
READ THE READ ME FILES!
There is a .bat file that has the potential to mess up your install
of GWX 3.0!!
Proceed with caution!

It's a great mod that should make the S-Boot mod even better!
Plus the Biber Mod I'm working on (with others) will use it.
Yes, this is an older mod.
But it can be adapted in so many ways.
Very good work for it's day.
Let's take it further.
