what all does the difficulty option for a career change? does it just make the AI smarter or does it change your realism settings? im new to SH4, this difficutly option was not in SH3.

from what I have seen it only changes realism settings and is pretty useless when you can change them yourself

It changes your realism settings.
Once you're in the captain's room, at the base, click on the right (the radio I think), to change the settings.

another question i have is how come my crew sees enemy or friendly ships that i cant see? they spot them about a minute before i can see them, does this happen to everybody? in SH3 when the crew spotted a ship and could see it too

That's a 'get used to it' item.
Yeah. they got sharp peepers. Now, I'm running Webster's GFO mod and there's a non-stock button that tells the watch to report the sighting - very useful, although the range is in feet, not yards, go figure.
If you run nothing else, run GFO, it is an improvement - still basically stock, but better.
Occasionally, you'll see a ship before the crew. My policy is to survey the sea on every sighting, just in case IJN Igottacaseforyou is boiling up my stern.

thanks, this game is so different compared to SH3, the biggest thing is there is no officers!! or if there is i havent figured how to use them or the TDC for that matter. does anybody know how to find the TDC, compute a torpedo attack, check for max range at current speed, set your crew OFF battlestations so they dont just fall asleep? that was wierd having my whole crew fall asleep

if upi scroll down you'll get a few vids and other topics you need for manual TDC. I recommend the DIIIck O' Kane targeting video. For me its the easiest to learn. There should be a button on your hud to take them off battlestations if anything else just press F1 and you get a list of the keyboard mapping.

in SH3 you could be in the command room and click on the periscope and you would have controll over the periscope or on the bridge and click the bicnoculers and you would be at that screen. am i correct in seeing that this is not possible in SH4?

what i mean in that can you just click the TBT to go to it, or do you have to always use the short cuts? i cant be able to do it but on other station like sonar and radar i can.

U - UZO/TBT
As posted above, F1 displays the key commands.
I document UIs for a living, do what I do, mess around and find out.

what all does the difficulty option for a career change?
1. In SH4 if you go to the ladder and up to the conning tower you will see the scopes. If you place the mouse at the base of the scope it will say "Attack Periscope" click there and you can go to Periscope view.
2. The TBT and Binoculars can be accessed by the keyboard or the menu bar at the bottom of the screen. SH4 is set up to use the menu or toolbar (which ever you want to call it) to access most functions in the game. If you do a search you can find a program called SH4 Menumaker and you can add, delete, change all the buttons and tabs to the way you would like to have them set up.
3. The gameplay settings/difficulty just turns on certain items automatically for each setting. But it also lets you pick and choose with custom settings. Maybe you want a more difficult setting but want to keep limited fuel but not dud torpedos, you can set it manually. The low, medium, high etc just set things automatically.
Good hunting.

I love SH4 but this is a shortcoming in the move from SH3 to SH4. We should be able to click on things and it work but for some unexplainable reason that was not included in SH4.
Several of the mods address this (TMO, RFB) and you can click on things and some work but it should have been like that in stock.

Nothing really changes the games challenge from the AI stand point the realism settings simply make you do more work on your own rather than the game doing it for you like manual targeting. 0% to 100% realism the AI will be the same though the higher you set the realism the more your brain has to do.
I dont fully agree with you cant click anything to use it that is false. Most everything in the conning tower can be clicked you can click on the periscopes and use them you can click on the sonar and use it same goes for the radar screens. You can also move from the control room to the conning tower by clicking the correct hatch and then on to the bridge and in some baots there is a door in the conning tower that leads into the deckgun. in fact the TBT is one of the few things that you must press a button in order to use. so with several devices there are 3 ways to use/get to them button direct clicking and menu tab. All this can be done in stock as far as I can recall though I could be wrong. If I am wrong about this someone please say so i have not played the stock game in a while.

You got the right idea if you like the game may as well play it to the fullest by trying out some of the mods.Of course the super mods like RFB and TMO the AI will not be wearing the kid gloves. If stock is sparring then the super mods are Chuck Norris and Bruce Lee Bam! one inch puch sending you flying.

why doesnt the control room or the conning tower shake or have pipes burst like they did in SH3? or do they and just havent been DCed heavy enough yet? also when I bought the bow gun (replacing the stern gun) i could no longer set any crew to it, in fact any time i went to battle stations nobody moved to man the AA gun either, i had to do it manully. I am downloading REAL FLEET BOAT, are these problems are addressed in the mod

I have seen lines burst in the control room many times and it can also happen in the conning tower though less often. and at least with TMO if the dc is within Id say 50-60yds or closer it well cause the sub to sway.TMO gives you the much better bang and then the sledge hammer smacking the steel drum effect when a DC goes off.If only they made light bulbs burst and the cork dust fall from the tops of all the bulkheads.

TMO is the tiger maru mod, right? which one do you like better RFB or TMO?

I prefer Trigger over RFB. Trigger has more to it campagin wise like new construction and running Sugar boats out of Dutch Harbor in AK. that and you can get a Tench class in TMO with ST(obesrvation scope mounted radar) late in the war.
RFB does have Real Sinking Mechanics and TMO lacks that. There are alot of subtale things between the two you really have to try both to find the one you prefer.then there is FOTRS(fall of the rising sun) that uses Trigger Maru as a base but tones down most of the AI and torpedo dud behaviours but FOTRS has a much higer amount of ships than any other mod. RFBs goal is to be much more historicaly correct and TMOs primary aim is to be more challenging though they both vastly imporve on graphics and sound and both are more historicaly correct when compared to the base game.
