Seems all the bitching and moaning of gamers is finally being recognized. Companies seem to be reversing the trend of more invasive DRM, while some are even shipping games without it entirely.
"I definitely believe this is all the result of a change in the public perception of DRM, a sort of grass roots uprising," observes Ron Carmel, co-founder of San Francisco-based developer 2D Boy. "Gamers are much more vocal about it than they used to be, perhaps because they are so accustomed to downloading music without too many restrictions.""Spore was the final straw that broke the camel's back," recalls Brad Wardell, president and CEO of Plymouth, Michigan-based developer Stardock. "Someone who buys software does not want to be made to feel like a chump for buying it. Much of the outcry came from legitimate customers who said that they shouldn't be restricted by DRM, especially since people with pirated versions weren't."

On the other hand, there are new games like Rise of Flight that require you to
be online constantly when playing singleplayer in order to check the DRM.

In unrelated news, it looks like the corrupt judge in the PirateBay case was not
assigned to the case randomly as he should have been.

It was only a matter of time, large game publishers are stupid, but when it comes to losing profits, they will catch on eventually

Yep, the jingle jangle sound of money falling from their pockets soon draws their attentions to the situation.

Well they had to notice in the end. Just a pity that we had to be done over first!:nope:

I won't be buying ROF because of their online policy.

But I'm only one person,so who cares ? Or am I ?

If ROF even see's the light of day I'll be surprised. :yep:

A lot of people I know won't buy ROF exactly because of that.

I won't be buying it because the features seem rather crummy

I've been playing MMOs and other such games that require internet connection and sometimes monthly payment to play, so ROF's requirements don't really bother me, but I can see why someone won't like to buy it on those grounds

and what about the people with dial ups or smallband that are slower then the required 512kbps to play the game, there are still many areas which do not share our luxury of having fast internet connections.

...there are still many areas which do not share our luxury of having fast internet connections.

Judging by our online games, Malaga is one of them. :har:

On another news, not all movie makers dislike piracy. :yeah:

My name is Eric D. Wilkinson and I am the producer of a small independent film called “Jerome Bixby’s The Man From Earth” (our review (http://www.rlslog.net/the-man-from-earth-2007-proper-dvdrip-xvid-domino/)).

I am sending you this email after realizing that our website has had nearly 23,000 hits in the last 12 days, much of it coming from your website. In addition, our trailer, both on the www.manfromearth.com (http://www.manfromearth.com/) site and other sites like YouTube, MySpace and AOL has been watched nearly 20,000 times AND what’s most impressive is our ranking on IMDb went from being the 11,235th most popular movie, to the 5th most popular movie in 2 weeks (we are also the #1 independent film on IMDb & the #1 science fiction film on IMDb). How did this all happen? Two words: Torrent / File Sharing sites (well, four words and a slash).

More specifically, ******.***. Our independent movie had next to no advertising budget and very little going for it until somebody ripped one of the DVD screeners and put the movie online for all to download. After that happened, people were watching it and started posting mostly all positive reviews on IMDb, Amazon and other places. Most of the feedback from everyone who has downloaded “The Man From Earth” has been overwhelmingly positive. People like our movie and are talking about it, all thanks to piracy on the net!

Am I upset… surprisingly no. Thanks to everyone who has downloaded this torrrent and watched the film, our awareness level is through the roof. For that I say, “THANK YOU”!
What you guys have done here is nothing short of amazing. In the future, I will not complain about file sharing. YOU HAVE HELPED PUT THIS LITTLE MOVIE ON THE MAP!!!! When I make my next picture, I just may upload the movie on the net myself!

Another good point Hunter. Maybe the most important as far as ROF is concerned.

I would think since their "small potatoes " in the game sale industry they would want the most sales they can get.

Well that's 3 sales they won't be getting. And I'm sure there will be alot more.

That's plain dumb business sense.

DRM really never bothered me. ROF looks like a good game to me. I understand it will be available soon. I will wait to see what others who have it are saying.

And how about a game like The Hunter?

You can download the client and create a "guest" account for free, but you start the game online, and you need to stay connected during play.

Anyone object to that system? I'm not even sure it qualifies as DRM. :hmmm:

Never noticed any DRMs in Civ 4.

On the online issue : It's ridiculous. I play games when I don't have access to the internet, which, when I find a job, can be up to six months a year. Definetly not buying any game that requires me to check in.
