In my current mission to patrol AE67 I plan to set up a new patrol somewhere in the Denmark Strait after initial 24hrs have expired,in order to attack supplies heading for Russia,as heavy fighting is now taking place at Stalingrad.I would like some useful information on traffic passing through this area,as this will be my first foray into said area, such as,

- Dates of formation and disbanding of specific convoy/s (I am in Nov 42)
- Types of shipping expected in this area, normal merchants, tankers, etc
- Approximate course of convoy/s through grid AD33,NE,NNE,etc
- Average speed of outbound convoy/s (From UK),slow, med etc
- Military strength of convoy/s (if any is expected that is),low, med etc
- Expected air cover around Iceland

I appreciate most of this info will be random from many people's experiences, but any info of any kind will be useful.

Lastly, does the game allow you to sail into areas of water without a grid reference?,as I plan to attack traffic as it heads towards Russia for as long as is needed,if I find them that is.

Thanks.

Guess I was asking for the practically impossible on this one,as every game is probably going to be different anyway.

Can someone at least tell me what month in 42 the JW convoy to Russia forms up?I looked online it was actually December.I am in Nov so...hmm,quite a dilemma,I could wait in the Denmark Strait until December, see what happens, and sail back home sometime in the new year, after sending my personal regards to Stalin.

Here's a wikipedia link that lays out all the JW and PQ convoy departure dates. However, I'm not sure even GWX simulates the Arctic convoys in this much detail.

Good luck on your attempt to interdict supplies to Uncle Joe. Bear in mind that the majority of Lend-Lease supplies eventually entered Russia through Vladivostok and the Persian corridor.

Shame we dont have snow and ice modelled in SH3,I would love to sail through an arctic blizzard, knowing it is far worse for my prey to travel through such conditions. It would have added so much realism and depth when going through the northern routes.I don't suppose there IS a mod out there somewhere that attempts to model this?,like modifying the rain graphics somehow?worth a thought at least :hmmm:

As I asked before, does the game allow us to travel into far out areas, such as areas of sea without a grid reference?,such as the Norwegian and Barents sea?

Thanks a lot.

Apparently there were convoys out of Iceland bound for Russia, yet later on they shifted that convoy to Loch Ewe.Looking at my map there is no traffic out of Iceland other than a small merchant route, hmm.
Also, looks like JW did in fact form in Dec 42,damn,that throws me out by a month.Would it be feasible do you think to wait until Dec for this convoy to pass?,have any of you done this in your campaigns?,I mean hung around for specific events to happen?

Sure you can; I went to Narvik during the Norwegian campaign (there are no grids there) without any problem.

Nice shots Jim

I am assuming those skins are only compatible with GWX,and not the stock game? I am currently waiting for GWX which is being sorted out for me.

IIRC they should work fine with any SH3 installation. :hmmm:

Is this benevolent purpose walking with them to your place of abode? :DL

Sure you can; I went to Narvik during the Norwegian campaign (there are no grids there) without any problem.

I did something similar recently, I was assigned grid AF61 which is round near the top of Norway, the date is May 1940. After completing 24 hours there I decided to take a trip to Spitsbergen. Some good scenery to be seen and it never gets dark up there that time of the year, which was something I hadn't experienced in SH3. Came across a few Norwegian patrol vessels which I avoided and I planned to attack the ports of Barentberg or Longyearbyen, but the weather turned nasty and scuppered those plans. Now heading for Jan Mayen island.
