View Full Version : Deciphering the Manual
I recently purchased SH4 Gold. I've printed out the manual that comes with the install CD. I'm not an intellect, but neither am I dumb. I can not make a correct hit on any ship no matter what range I am at. Being that I am a new submariner, I have been always positioning my sub at a 90 degree angle to the target. I have sent the fish at the bow hoping to hit amid ship or near the stern. I have also led the fish as I would when I am hunting game in the mountains. My range variations have been somewhere between 1500 and 500. Discouraging to say the least. The instructions tell me that once I find the target with the cross hairs on the scope, check the identity manual and select the red check mark, everything is done automatically. When firing the torpedo, my speed is slow forward to keep a steady angle on the bow of the target. What is it that I am doing wrong or do not understand.
I find it easier to drop a deer at a full gallop than a ship that is almost dead in the water. I had to finish of one freighter with the cannon, and because I was too close, particles from the explosion destroy my sub. I am more dangerous than the enemy.
I'd appreciate any help, advice, jokes or laughs. Much obliged.

I assume that you are playing stock SH4 and are using auto targeting.
The most common mistake people make is not opening the torpedo doors before shooting. Use the Q key to open the doors as you are setting up your approach. Shooting with the doors closed will cause you to miss aft.
Next lock on to the target with the L key this will set your torpedo running depth at least for the first fish, set the others yourself. You can unlock the periscope and aim at the part of the target you want to hit.
Check out the link Webster suggested, all kinds of Information there.

Ps you will find out that unlike deer these guys can shoot back.

Too true, if I got a question for ANYTHING there's somebody here who knows. And that manual, it should be biodegradable if you're one of them eco-freaks. If not, I'm pretty sure it's combustible too. If you're not a pyrotechnic, I would imagine it could function as a childrens fantasy story that you could use.
And welcome to SubSim too!

Yep. That's what I use it for. Works well:D
Much obliged Gents,
I'm not feeling so bad now, but I must do a lot of practicing it appears. I'll certainly go to the suggested sites you all have recommended, and seriously consider the many uses for the manual that were presented. About twelve years ago, I bought a subsim for an old Mac Performa 5200. I got to be quite the shark with it. SH4 is such a real presentation by comparison, I now am placing myself in Naval Boot Camp.
I will keep in mind that you guys are the place to go when help is needed. I'd like to get on line, but I think I'll get all my ducks in a row first.
Thanks again.

And Akio, if we had a good manual what would we need Subsim for? We're just one colossal interactive, sometimes ornery:D, super-manual at your service.:-j Welcome to Subsim and have a lot more fun playing the best sub simulators there are!

Rip each of the one sheets in two and you have more campfire starters than one needs:D
The manual made excellent toilet reading. Not much more than that.

NEVER preorder and pay $60.00 for a game again.
Wait for the reviews on the manual first. :haha:

The funny thing is, I have a compendium of manuals that I use for bathroom reading when things start to take awhile... :smug:
