Is there any good image editor that reads the .dds files or any converter that convers .dds to something more acceptable for editing and back to .dds?

free of course... well more than ideal ;)

I already use the gnu gimp but seem unable deal with .dds

I did try that plugin but it goes bang on GIMP 2.6.5 64x startup

application failed to initialize properly (0xc000007b)

paint.net will open and edit it in dds format
