Very Nice VonDos!
:up:

May I suggest you add placement nodes to the Deck.
Then place the different aircraft carried on Deck in a new dat.
That way it displays the proper aircraft on Deck according to
the eqp file dates.

BTW corrently she remindes me about HMS Eagle. At last her dimentions and current shape of haul are much more closer to that ship, while for Courageous Repulse's haul would be more suitable.This way making HMS Eagle first and then modufing it into HMS Coregeous could be more simplier work.

YES! My favorite British carrier class - can't wait to see it/them! I'm going to set up a custom mission with her and the German battlecruisers to see how long she lasts. :DL

You did an excellent job modeling the unusual flight deck that these ships had - very difficult compared to a more modern carrier.

Hi VonDos,

excellent work. The suggestion by privateer, you can find a similar solution in LSH3 Version 4.0 (files FloatplaneD.dat and FloatplaneD.zon). Just ad some nodes (cfg#P01 ...) to the main object of your ship (p stands for "plane" http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/88.gif ). Ad some [Equipment xx] to your EQP-file:

[Eqipment xx]
NodeName=P01
LinkName=PLANENAME_1
StartDate=19380101
EndDate=19451231

and create a new DAT-file which will contain all the plane modells you need for that ship. Insert this DAT file (and the ZON file) to the folder "Library". Since Stock-SH3, we have this solution with the "incarcatura.dat" and "incarcatura.zon" (in folder "Library"). Than vary "LinkName", "StarDate" and "EndDate" as you like (see for example the gun equipment of some merchant or warships).

Here is a fascinating analysis of "HMS Glorious"s last battle. It seems like her captain was neither a pleasant nor competent fellow. Some of the author's most significant findings:

-At the time of her sinking, the carrier's captain was rushing home to court martial an officer he had a grudge against. Morale on the ship was reported to be very poor.

-He chose to set sail with only two destroyers as escort, even though the "Glorious" would have been safer within a larger battle group.

-No lookout was on duty in the carrier's crow's nest at the time of the engagement.

-The escorting destroyers were positioned parallel to the carrier, instead of in a linear formation (which would have afforded better visibility). Consequently, nobody noticed the German battlecruisers until it was too late.

-No combat air patrol was established; had an aircraft been aloft, the disaster might never have occurred. In fact, no aircraft launch was even attempted until shells were demolishing the ship's hangars, by which time the situation was hopeless.

-The "Glorious" maintained her course for 47 minutes after receiving a report of strange ships on the horizon. Had she immediately changed course and worked up to maximum speed, she may have escaped.

-After "Glorious" started to take hits, she transmitted her contact report on the wrong frequency, and maintained this frequency until her sinking (the Wikipedia entry on "Glorious" falsely states that there was "no time" to send a report).

Out of approximately 1600 men on "Glorious", "Ardent", and "Acasta", 39 survived.

Really interesting, a serious serie of errors.
In a match between Gneisenau+Sharnhorst and Glorious+Warspite (+2dd) (for example), maybe ship fate could have been different.

A couple of up-to-date while testing A\A:

Gorgeous shots!

I agree that the ship would not have sunk if a British battleship had been present. It seems to have been German policy not to engage other heavy units (although there were exceptions, like "Bismarck" vs "Hood"). To my knowledge, the nearest large British surface units in the area were the "Ark Royal" and the heavy cruiser "Devonshire" (seen here).
http://www.uboat.net/allies/warships/photos/br/ca_hms_devonshire.jpg

I'm not sure if "Ark Royal" got the distress but her small caliber guns would have been no help to "Glorious" anyway.

"Devonshire" picked up the SOS from "Glorious" but did not assist. She would have been no match for the German vessels - plus she was evacuating the Norwegian royal family & Norway's gold reserves at the time of the disaster. Also, there are doubts about how clear the distress signal was, due to mistakes made in the "Glorious"s radio room (they not only got the frequency wrong, but they didn't use the most powerful radio on board to send it. For some reason the destroyers did not send their own report before sinking; since none of their radio room personnel survived we may never know why.)

Although "Devonshire"s captain made (IMO) the right decision, to this day relatives of the "Glorious" crewmembers are still angry. All in all, a very tragic story. 1500 brave men and three fine ships thrown away - in large part thanks to one man's behavior. :nope:

I know I've banged on about these ships long enough, so Von Dos - that is be-au-ti-ful....! Bella bella, artiste!

By the way, the sinking of Glorious wasn't exactly a textbook operation on the part of the Kriegsmarine - they expended an absurd amount of ammunition for hits gained, and Scharnhorst managed to get herself torpedoed by Acasta - not great drills.

iambecomelife
04-21-09, 06:36 PM
True - I think that the German commander of the mission got sacked afterwards for not accomplishing his primary mission, which was to go after merchant shipping.

Just had a nice battle with her & her two German "friends". It went well; the ship took a lot of damage. Noticed some flickering of textures on the port side. Also, I noticed that there were several boats hidden inside the hull object (launches from the default battleship unit). Maybe they could be reworked into other features, like liferafts or oil drums...?

Sorry for my delay in responding - RL has been overwhelming as of late.:damn:

Beautiful ship, absolutely beautiful, and one for which I have been waiting a very long time (early war UK CV's have been an area which SHIII has been lacking for a long, long time).:D Are you doing any more work along the forward hull, or is the final image the final one (it appears that some of the details of the texture are incorrect, especially in regards to porthole placement along the bow). Other than that, this model is looking very, very good.:up:

Hi VonDos,

very good work - looks very good with the oil drums. If you want to replace the swordfish skin, you must import the new TGA into the CV_AirPlanes.dat or add the new skin - renamed: CV_Swordfish.tga - to the folder "data/Textures/TNormal/tex".

The Scharnhorst apparently set a record during the sinking of the Glorious - for the longest range hit- 26,000m.
The carriers do seem to be quite fragile in game, i've seen the Graf Zeppelin sunk by a pair of destroyers, and a single salvo from a battleship. Illustrious classes fair no better. Shame, but probably fairly accurate . . any opinions?

Good stuff as usual VonDos, another one to add to my folder of all your other ships in SH3. I just wonder a bit about the stability of those oil drums on a flat deck in heavy weather. Petty point really though, sorry m8.

I feel guilty now :wah: :salute:

Looking forward to this release

Hummmm IIRC carrier airplanes normally were not fueled in the deck due to security reasons. If the carrier suffered an attack right then, the whole high octane aviation gazoline would explode in flames and wreck havoc. In the battle of Midway this disaster happened to the japanese, as they were refueling and rearming their airplanes at deck for a quick second sortie, and it caused the loss of the carrier when the US airplanes attacked.

Also, as Rowi pointed out, it would be rather odd to see those drums there if the ship is tackling with rough weather :hmmm: I would suggest eliminating them or swapping them for other more appropiate objects.

Other than that, the ship is looking GORGEOUS :yeah:

If you are going to change them might I suggest you include both and give the user the option as to which one they prefer http://www.psionguild.org/forums/images/smilies/wolfsmilies/pirate.gif

Those currently used in GWX3.0 (and the beta Courageous I suspect).

Sorry guys,

all nice ideas with the different skons - but remember: the Swordfish is not a plan from the folder "data/Air" belonging to the roster "British/Air". So they will not show any markings, when you use these skins.

The skins embedded in the "CV_AirPlanes.dat" will show markings - because they are part of the skin.

Last news pre release i think ^_^
I've replaced the drums on the deck with some simples box (made of wood, same color of the bridge), so this problem is solved :rotfl:
