remember that in the old days.. I think it was Old Spice that sponsered it...some of the commercials during the old NFL games..
OK...I want to see what YOU would have done my last mission...
May 1940...patrolling grid AE after leaving the supply ship off greenland...overcast, rain,
"WARSHIP SPOTTED"
I dive to periscope depth, hard right rudder..heading around 158 degrees or so...find them in my periscope...there..northwest of us....
An American convoy..all warships...several destroyers..can see a cruiser it appears, 2 BIG BATTLESHIPS..first i've seen. destroyer screen passes me, closest is at 267, moving fast away...next one inbound...drop scope...ahead flank, 15 meters depth...spin around...from the bow tubes I have electric in tubes 3 and 1, steam in 2 and 4. 4300 yards to the trailing battleship, 114 degrees and climbing on the angle..
i didn't make the shot due to them being neutral and cautious of renown.
the trailing destroyer is inbound..drop my scope again and head towards him, ahead slow and dropping to 80 meters and let them head on by towards Rekjavik...never was pinged..no depth charges...
What would you have done? what would've been the negative effects on a neutral

With the manuvers and noise you made you, would have been DEAD if they hadn't been Neutral. :dead:
Also fireing on a neutral Taskforce is asking for the Death card. :DL
They wouldn't have quit till they made a fish dinner out of you.
You were smart to play it safe. :salute:

Battleships are worth a lot of renown. Renown that would have been deducted from your score for sinking a neutral. Best to let them pass.

i figured I would be...I was shocked when the destroyers went on by and never pinged...
learning to be berry berry quiet now...getting trashed in the channel for 3 hours already by a little bitty ASW trawler!

You weren't pinged because there were no hostilities yet between Germany and the United States.
Had they been hostile, as FIREWALL eluded to already, the escorts would have located you long before you'd been in a decent firing position.:)

As I recall, the US didn't enter the war until after it had been running 2 1/4 years. IIRC, they only joined the hostilities when somebody made the mistake of sinking some of their battleships in a sneak attack without prior declaration of war. Who knows how long it would have taken them to join the just cause if potential enemies had just left American ships alone.
The cold war might have been a very different thing if the US had entered the war before the fall of France and more than a year before the German invasion of Russia.
At a guess, the Germans would not have invaded Russia, the Russians would have attacked (for which they were building their armed forces.) The Eastern front at the end of 1941 would have been 1,000km further west than it actually was. Italy would have been knocked out of the war sooner, and there is a chance that Spain might have been invaded by the Allies. Unless there was a separate peace with the Western Allies, it is unlikely that the Russians would have been stopped before they hit the Rhine, and possibly not until they hit the Atlantic.
The Western Allies had a hard enough time defeating a fraction of the depleted German Army. Could they have beaten the Army that defeated Germany? I doubt it. So they probably don't fight Russia straight off, and all Western mainland Europe becomes Communist.
Tough call on how this would have affected the Japanese. With the US involved in Europe they seem to have a free hand to act in the Pacific. OTOH, with Russia not nearly so close to disaster, they would have felt less confident about China. My guess is Pearl Harbour might have come a bit earlier, if they could get the units ready, but the Brits would be trying to avoid a war between Japan and the US so as to bring Japan in against Russia. Then the cold war gets replaced by an earlier shooting war, with the West, Japan, India, Turkey and one Chinese faction taking on Russia and another Chinese faction.
Would have made the actual Second World War look like a sideshow. I think you should have taken the shot. Are you willing to accept that responsibility?

You did the right thing. I have lot's of Death Cards left. This time your name was not on one of them. But, next time....
Live to fight another day.
