Hey everyone.. thought i'd post a lil story about my patrol this evening..
its June, 1940... i'm heading out on my 14th patrol, type VIIC, i'm excited for this. I just turned up the realism to 60% (i like the external views and no dud torpedos). After a botched patrol to BF18 last time, a few slipups with the enter key, and a few silly shots at patrol craft doing 25+ kts at long range, i had to redeem myself. Boy did i get the chance tonite.

I'm being sent to BF19, last time i didnt make it before running out of torpedos.. i figure this time will be different. it takes a few days of sailing to get to the little "chokehold" southwest of grid AN, i do a few hydrophone checks.. awesome, warships everywhere.. i'm not gonna screw with that.. keep onto my course, i'll stay under until nightfall.

Its midnight, i'm no where near my patrol grid.. but i'm pretty deep into this channel (i guess you'd call it?) between two ports.. my game starts lagging, for a few seconds.. could it be? i've read about this before.. but never experienced it in game.. Ship spotted!.. Ship spotted! I quickly check my map.. and see a large ship icon i've never seen before (gods eye is enabled) its a large convoy! at this point i'm super excited, this could make for some excellent tonnage. Anyways, its 0100, nice an dark out.. i decide to run flank and try to get ahead of them.. but whats this? ship spotted.. it cant be, theres no way he could have spotted me, i'm more than 15nm away..

Lucky me, a fast destroyer headin my way.. i crash dive.. rig for silent, make a slight turn to starboard.. this cant be good, my first convoy and its already gonna be messed up? this guys circling around, i get another warship from my hydrophone operator, i guess hes comming to join the search too.. all the while, i count 14 merchant contacts on my map.. so i evade.. they depth charge me, not even close.. thats when the pinging starts, at first they cant get a fix and i'm fine with that.. after a few minutes one of them gets lucky, the pinging increases.. i hear him comming for his attack run.. flank speed! hard to port.. i gotta get out of this, because at this point i figured i'd probly be filling out a D.I.D card soon.

The depth charges hit pretty close to their mark.. i'm damaged, but not too bad.. all stop, rig for silent, no leaks for now.. i'm just gonna sit it out.. let the convoy slip away, and hopefully bring the escorts with them. after about an hour of game time, the two escorts join up with the convoy again. Its on now.. i head up north, pretty far behind the convoy, its heading west, slightly south.. i make my turn and full speed ahead. its almost daylight before i'm in a good position to make my turn for my attack run. 8 am comes, i'm 1000yds away.. this could work. I send off 4 fish.. 2 for a tanker, 2 for a C2 cargo.. theres only two escorts still, one way up ahead.. one behind, probly the same two that were hunting me.
The C2 broke her back when my torpedo hit, it only took one.. the tanker however, kept on chugging along, lost a bit of speed and had a fire on deck.. i can take care of that later.

I make my way into the middle of the convoy, the destroyer started zig zagging through the ships, towards my last position.. looks like the small guy up front is turning around also, this could be okay.. i hang around an wait.. whats this? the same destroyer that was hunting me earlier is now making a stupid turn, right into my line of fire.. 340yds away, big mistake. Luckily 1 fish is loaded by than, and i let it loose.. 40 seconds later i hear a nasty explosion.. 1 destroyer down, and a armed trawler left, and i'll have this convoy to myself. The trawler starts making his way around, hes pretty far away, making silly turns around where i first fired from.. stern shot? i think it could work, i fire it off.. just my luck, he makes a perfect turn right into the path of my torpedo. No more escorts, this convoy is mine.

i make my way into an open spot, and surface the boat.. little wind, i'm right inbetween two big lines of tankers, cargo ships, and smaller cargos.. i start letting loose with the deck gun, AP rounds. damn i'm wasting shots, this adrenalines got me missin. Soon enough i run out of AP, 2 big cargos down.. time to switch to HE rounds, it takes a bit more to sink them with these i noticed. Thats okay, one ship i hit right under the smoke stack, it was an awesome explosion, only took 3 rounds to sink her. I continue on my way, sinking whatever i have a chance for, whatevers closest.. I kept checking for escorts, no one was showing up? poor merchants, hopefully someone shows up to rescue them.

After all was said an done, i sunk 9 out of the 14 merchants in that convoy, and the 2 escorts sent with them. Pretty epic for me.. the attack started at around 0800, and i was out of all ammunition by 1000, time to head home.

The trek home wasnt without its "oh sh**" moments, i must have really pissed the british off. i tried staying submerged during the day.. every time i'd surface within an our or two (and not much battery charging) i'd spot some aircraft.. i notice they take a pass before attacking.. so i man the flak gun and try to take them out before a crash dive on their next approach. Looks like i'll need some practice with that, its only gonna get worst as the war moves on.
All in all, i made it home, i had my boat repaired almost fully.. earned a ton of renown, and quite a few promotions/awards for the crew. This game will defenitly keep me hooked.

Thanks for reading everyone.

also, heres a quick screenshot of the "trail" of destruction.. i sure enjoyed it

Those trawlers are nasty to kill!! very well done indeed!!! If germany had more captains like you, we would be skrewd!! lool

apply for the XXI program, maybe uncle donitz will lend a prototype:up:

I still remember when I find a convoy just with one trawler protecting, and I used 4 fish and still couldn't sink it... passed to easier water :timeout:

Heh, yeah thats happened to me a bunch of times in my earlier patrols.. its hard to give up after using 4 torpedos on it. And its not a nice feeling to slip away with only a few torpedos left.

BTW, i'm not sure if i was a lil buzzed when posting last night, or if mods moved my post to his subforum? but i meant for it to go into SHIII, not mods workshop :] if a mod could move it, that'd be awesome. If it was moved, than.. no worries.
