One of the biggest problems with Emblems on the Turms
has always been the limits.

No more Mates!
You now will have nearly unlimited customization ability on them.

Where and what you want is now possible.

I started on this over a year ago.
I was never happy with the first test releases for several reasons.

Most users are confussed when multiple files and file placements
are needed.

Introduceing new nameing and placement stuff throws dirt in most users faces.

If a mod is hard to use?
Support is even harder for Me.

This Mod solves 90% of the problems.
But gives 100% results!

First up will be the 7C_1 Turm.

It will be released tonite with a Demo U-407 Emblem.
(Done my way)

At that time I will edit this post.

This should work for most any version or Super Mod.
I've tested it in Stock SH3 and it works fine there.
Also tested in GWX 2.0 and up.

This is an early release and some other
'little things' will be added in the future.

How to make your own Emblem.

In the Documents folder you'll find a TGA file.
7C_1_base.tga

The Grey areas are the Paintable areas.

This next image shows what goes where.

Note that you DO NOT need to type backwards!

Once you've painted those areas as you see fit
Flood Fill the Black area as shown below.

And save as a tga useing a new name of your chooseing.

Place this new file in the data/Emblems/SubEmblems folder.

Then select it in game as your emblem.

I'm not a Graphics guy so the Demo tga and such are pretty

Ideas! As the 7C_1_base.tga is only a graphics file, it can be replaced and updated before/during patrol, with no ill effects during game.....*off to make some Warship, Merchant & AC markers*

Exactly one of my thoughts on 'Scoreing Marks'

You can now add your 'Kills' any way you want.
And you can Weather the Turm as your game progresses.

Got jumped by Aircraft?
Add a few patches to fix the Bullet holes.

The things that you can do now are limited
only by your imagination.

The 7B_1 Turm is in progress now.

I stopped doing plastic models years ago.

I'm working on plans for a Covered Bridge that I'll make with real
wood and such now.
:hmmm:

It will be around 3 foot long.

It's based on the Bridges found in my area.

:hmmm:He will when he's had enough time to create enough to make it worth releasing them.

Are you planning to do turms for the II, IX, and XXI boats as well? If so then I was thinking of putting together a single pack that loads up all the turms and a bunch of historic (and maybe some non-historic) emblems. Gimme time and I'll get something together.

Biggest problem with the historic emblems is the lack of data as to positioning. the more famous boats are easy cos there a lots of photo's around showing what they looked like, but some of the more obscure boats are harder to find info on what emblems went where.

The most popular positions are either side and the front top of the turm but finding out what was where on each boat is a struggle.

It's a complicated process that requires
editing with Notepad, Deep X 5.5, and 3DS Max.

OK as you UL the turms, I'll DL them and start working on the historic pack. There are plenty to do with the VIIC & VIIB so work has started but it will be a slow process as I need to find some reference that gives and indication of the location and content for each sub.

I've got the book by Georg Hagel whcih provides all of the known emblems, however some boats had an emblem for only one patrol then it was painted over, and the book unfortunately doesn't have a lot of information as to where on the turm they were.

I've got good quality scans of a few hundred of the more than 1000 emblem drawings but some of these need to be coloured which is hard from black and white images. If anyone has any photo's that show emblem locations I'd be grateful of getting a look at them to do what I can. i was thinking of do a release when I've got about 20 of the top scoring boats done that I can find source materials on emblem locations.

The 3 I done so far were done specifically because they were not side of the turm emblems and I wanted to see what could be done with this great mod of yours. Thanks for doing it.:salute:

If anyone knows what I need to look at for the
Image in the Upgrade screen?

I'd be thankful for the info.

I also plan to add a placement Node to the Turms so you can
add Stuff like Plaques and Life Rings.
Or a Christmas wreath if you wish to.

would be nice.

Can anybody tell me what i'm doing wrong here. I have enabled the mod with JSGME and when i select the demo Turm i get this. I am using the VIIC with Turm 1. I've tryed changing resolutions, disabling various mods but i still get the same results. I created a couple of my own emblems with Gimp but it still looks exactly like the image above. I cant see the wood for the trees here so can anybody please help.

the Game is grabbing the Turm7c_8 info.

Now, is it better to replace the data folder in ..7C_1 with the one in ..7C_8 or to load both mods with JSGME?

Tarjak noted the Turm was not working several days ago
and PM'd me.

I just had to chase it down.

Enable the 7C_8 and the 7C_1 and the 7C_1 shows properly.
When I finish a few more Turms
I'll put them together so all Turms are enabled
at the same time.


The Game should not be useing the 7C_8 Turm info,
as it's for AI Units.
Go figure, eh?

This means I'll most likely have to do all the AI Turms as I do the Player Turms.
I had planned on doing them last.

I've just uploaded my VIIB Historic Turms pack for use with this mod. It includes the VIIB Turm Your Way mod so you don't have to install everything separately.

The mod has all the known emblems for 20 of the 24 Type VIIB boats. 4 Boats either had no emblem or there is no existing data on what the emblems were.

Placement is historic where information was available.

In doing research for the turm emblems I've come a cross a couple of things which I've not known before. e.g. the Laughing Sawfish emblem carried by 9th FLotilla boats appears to have actually been blue and not black, green or red.

Excerpt from Georg Hogel's "U-Boat Emblems of World War II:
U-659... According to Canadian notes: "Blue swordfish" sunk 04/05/1943

And according to the book U-88 had the tower painted light blue!

MMLFNP MLF. The info I had was that the turtle was on the starboard side only. No photo's available so I went on what was in the book. If anyone has any info on actual positioning or photo's with good shots of the emblems I'd be grateful as it will help get these as accurate as I can.

:hmmm: You are most likely right there. The only photo I've seen where the turtle was apparent was of the stbd side. The Revell model supplied 2 decals, one for each side so I assumed that was the case. I will look through the books I have when I get home (In France for 2 weeks at the moment).

U-203 is one of the boats where the book I mentioned above goes into a bit of detail about positioning etc. Unfortunately most of the other entries are pretty skimpy with some merely mentioning commissioning and sinking or scuttling dates and showing a black and white hand drawn image of the emblem.

Excerpt from Georg Hogel's U-Boat Emblems of WWII:
Conning tower device. The coat of arms of Essen, patron city of U-203 was painted on the front of the conning tower. Below it, Kottman's device, the Olympic Rings, was painted... On the starboard side of the conning tower was a turtle.

Since Privateer found a way of applying emblems more historically correct I have had the urge to create some emblems of my own. I have just started to learn GIMP and these are my first attempts. They are not as good as i had hoped for but they look quite good in-game. These are historically correct emblems for these boats but the colours and placement may not be correct as I only had the black and white images from U-Boataces.com to go from. In fact these emblems have been created from those images. If anyone would like them i will do a few more before uploading a small pack. I will give credit to any images i have used to the persons concerned.

Should be relatively easy to do. as all it requires is a number to be typed on either side of the Turm. Just need the Type II turms as most of these boats were II's. The VIIB and VIIC I'll take a look at when I get some spare time.:DL

Fantastic work guys, my hats off to you as usual, Privateer superb mod m8. I had some great fun with my new sub emblems last night.

I have a little question to ask, would either yourself or Recerboy mind if I experimented merging the dat files of this mod and RB's Flags and Pennants mod?, that's assuming that it's not impossible. If I am successfull then I'll post here and someone could release it as a combined mod after suitable testing with full credit given of course to both of your work. Hopefully this combined mod would include at least 7b and 7c Turms.

I'll do the VIIA's as well as they looked similar enough. When the Type II and IX turms are ready I'll take a look at the boats that were in commission pre-war.

I should be able to release a VIIB pack of pre-war numbered turms this weekend if I get time. I won;t do any VIIC's (U-69 and up),as none were in commission at the outbreak of hositilities and therefore would not have carried a number on the tower between their launch and commissioning, unless I can find some photos that prove otherwise. From what I can tell these would have only had their DAK emblems which were the ID painted on after launch by the manufacturer and worn until commissioning.

Fantastic work guys, my hats off to you as usual, Privateer superb mod m8. I had some great fun with my new sub emblems last night.

I have a little question to ask, would either yourself or Recerboy mind if I experimented merging the dat files of this mod and RB's Flags and Pennants mod?, that's assuming that it's not impossible. If I am successfull then I'll post here and someone could release it as a combined mod after suitable testing with full credit given of course to both of your work. Hopefully this combined mod would include at least 7b and 7c Turms.

Currently my main system went boom.

And I've been out of town for nearly a week so things are slow.

1st,
the reflections will be fixed ASAP.
The 2A is nearly ready and has the updated reflection.

It also will have attachment nodes.
A seperate dat will contain Life Rings and such.
That would be the best way to also add the Flags stuff.
Throw the needed files in the seperate dat.
Then call them in the eqp file.
Much easier to update the files then.
But that's just my thought.

VIIB Pre-War Turms are available here: http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/downloads.php?do=file&id=1010

This gives you the numbers painted on the side of the tower prior to the start of the war. Only VIIB boats available until the Type II turms are ready. The numbers for the type VIIA boats are included but will only appear if you use the VIIB/1 turm.

Forgive my ignorance but I'm currently d'ling the Turm VIIC historic pack Pt. 1 & I have the Turm7c_8_Your_Way fix. Last night I got the combined Turm 7b Your Way (with emblems included). In which order are they to be applied to get correct placement of emblems on 7c boats.

It doesn't matter how you apply them. All 3 of my packs include the fix as well as privateers orginal mod so all you need to is load them using JSGME. You may get an overwrite dialog if you use both of the VIIC packs as they contain the same DAT files as each other. The are the same and it won't matter how you load them.

Due to conflicts with ID numbers.
The 7C_8 (which is an AI unit) interfers
with the 7C_1 Turm in Game.
Until I do another update?
Use this fix.

I'm going through all Turms to crush this type conflict.

I've combined the VIIB and VIIC Historic turms into a single pack. This pack fixes a number of errors both in formatting and placement of emblems and covers a the VIIC's from U-69 up to U-291 so far. I'm keeping the pre-war pack separate as not everyone plays the August 1939 campaign start.

Would you guys prefer the pack to be a single DL for the whole lot or be able to pick and choose so that load times are kept down and you only load the turm type for the boat type you are playing?

I'll keep going on the next release which will continue to extend the emblems for the VIIC's as quickly as I can.

That would be really great. It adds a lot of immersion. The periscope looks so much nicer with it. Since there has been a version for GWX, I guess Flakmonkey would be fine if one uses his model.

The Twisty Periscope Thingy was made for GWX 1.03. It seems to work alright with "stock" GWX 3.0 sub skins. From what I've been told though, it may not work so well with some skin mods: you may get weird looking textures.

I know that it works with GWX 3 and actually, I have added it to my GWX 3 files. However, if I am not wrong it uses the same files so there is a conflict and people have to choose what they want. Either the emblems,... or the twisty thingy (I guess most users do not want to add the twisty thingy to the turm files themselves). That's why I ask privateer to combine both.

I hope he will do it.

If you and all of your online multiplayer friends also use this mod then you should have no problems, Desga. :yeah:

Otherwise, you'll have to disable the mod because it will cause the game to crash in multiplayer. SH3 allows mods to textures and graphics without any fuss, but the fact that the turm models themselves are modified means there would be a file conflict due to the .dat files not matching.

Also, if you and your friends use custom emblems, all of you would have to download those and place them inside your emblems folder. This is usually located in:
C:\Program Files\Ubisoft\Silent Hunter III\data\Emblems\SubEmblems
if you have installed SH3 or GWX to the default location.

I hope this helps!
