If you look at the top of the SS forums you will see a download link. I believe the files added here do not go to FF. If you have something to load to SS or submarine related files contact Neal. Neal and moderators have been loading this download link for the past week.

Yep, I got a tip around Christmas that FF was just not making enough money to support the massive bandwidth usage. At the time, they were unsure if they would change to a subscription model or cease ops.

As Warhawk said, we are gearing up here for a new downloads section that will mimic what FileFront offered. This is something Sailor Steve suggested at the Houston meet in October. We have migrated to a new XEON server for this purpose. We depend on voluntary donations to cover the costs of our servers, as long as we receive that support, we should be ok. The GWX Team graciously underwrote much of the 2008 budget by allowing Subsim to host their awesome GWX mod during Dec '07 as a donation mod for several weeks, and players did pitch in and help.

Download sites come and go, SUBSIM has been here for 12+ years and we will be here forever. (I even have a packet of passwords and account settings to be passed on to other SUBSIM memebrs in the event of my death).



The SUBSIM Downloads File Bank

It will be free, the cost of the additional server(s) will be covered by donations
If we can, we may have one or two donation-only mods to help offset costs
Any mod guru can upload and manage his mods.
Mod makers will need to PM the Mod Manager and Admin (details coming) to get access to upload.

Well, I didn't have much stuff in there but there's a lot of cool
MODs up that oughta be saved and re-upped somewhere else,
twise atleast.

Just today I was lookin for info about who made the firsts bearing overlays 360
and found out that things started to get hard to find from back 2005.

We got archives of subsim, google, wayback stuff etc but them original zip
files that might have info about modders are missing in some cases.

It seems not everything is forever in teh internets.
Only the bad stuff you never wanted to see in the first place stays
for eons on end.

As far as i know, rapidshare is not for free use for uploaders. You can download for free but you have to wait 60 sec or less. When you pay you don`t have to wait and you can upload. Thise is how it works as far as i remember ;)

You'll pardon me if *I* don't shed any tears over FF's demise. Considering the oaths I swore at them after they deleted ALL my files, and in the middle of my having to deal with no Internet access due to Hurricane Gustav, it's a wonder they lasted this long!! :haha:

EDIT: I just realized something. I got the news today, and it's my birthday!! What a great present!!!:woot::woot::woot:

I have all my stuff on BtS-Mods.com right now. I wouldn't mind a second site, or even just moving everything here instead.


We do not have a file size limit, but anything over 30MB needs to be uploaded with FTP. We can set up an account for that. If anyone has over 1GB of mods, we can set up another account.

Number of files is not limited. However, if someone has 100 custom missions, for example, we would ask them to include them in one zip file and offer them as a "mission pack". This cuts down on the clutter and makes it 100x easier for the player to download 100 files :salute:

If you have 100 mods, for example, and they are all small files, it might be a good idea to package them as a combination mod.

If you have 20 different mods, some big, some small, then it would make more sense to upload and list them all separately.

Stuff that's over 500 MB I have in 256 MB parts. All but one radio station is in parts. In a way it makes downloading easier because you can download some parts now, some later, instead of one huge file. If I were to upload here, would you prefer everything in one file? Larger parts?

rapidshare got this point system, you can upload for free as an a collector account.. and everytime someone downloads your file youll get 1 point or 2 points maybe and when you got 10k points i think youll get a premium account.. but that 10k points sooo damn many..

I've been with them for 3 years without a hitch. Last month all hell breaks loose. Worst off I get no answer and then they finally try to blame me that I didn't unchecked the scheduled files for deletion. Load of horse manure. I check my files regularly onsite. It was an excuse to hide the real issue that they are loosing there support and systematically shutting down there servers..

Anyhow I'll support subsim.com and bts-mod.com. People here are more reliable than rapidshare or megaupload. :D

I download from Rapidshare alot, beats me why hardly any here use rapidshare its a good place to upload/DL files lets you use a download manager as well. Thing that use to annoy me with Filefront is it wouldn't let me use IDM (internet download manager) so i would have to download using the browser one which is much slower.

the forum titled ubm is only for the gwx team and there crossover issues getting 1.5 mods to work in the ATO side and combined with gwx

i dont know why they dont change the name of it because it is confusing.

once gwx is ready it will be full of action there.

when the download section started it took on the same names as the forum catagories, all you will find in ubm download section is ATO mods

Good point. Currently, the mods that are for the original game up to v1.4 are in the SH4 section.

Mods that work for the v1.5 U-boat Missions and SH4 Gold are in the SH4 UBM section.

If that ordering does not seem logical, shoot me a PM and help me fix it. Moving files is really easy.

The Uboat forum is for all interested in the Uboats and the 1.5 add on. It was not specifically made for one modding individual or group. The creation was to assist those that have interest in Uboats and those with interest in the fleets have a separate forum in hopes to keep it organized. It is a bit confusing because 1.5 is an add on after 1.4 which was just the fleets. Natural progression to the 1.5 add on for the fleets was assumed and for the most part what has happened. Perhaps it should be simply entitled SH4 Uboats Mod Forums (1.5) or something to that affect.

The 1.5 section says 'Mods that pertain directly to the U-boat add-on for SH4' which implies if it's not for the German side, it shouldn't go there. That coupled with the fact that most uploads have been made to the 1.4 section, shows that most people think the 1.5 section is one for things to do specifically with U-boats only and the 1.4 section is for the 1.4 and 1.5 fleet boat mods.

It would be better if the 1.4 section was for mods for version 1.4 and the U-Boat add-on section was for mods for 1.5. Calling it U-Boat add-on section probably doesn't help either, as it emphasises the U-boat only mod idea that some people have. I have to say I myself got that impression too.

IMO the present goal of most modders is to create mods that work for both versions so its one mod download (or 2 if its a big mod) and you use whichever version fits your game.

it makes the most sense really because lots of talent has moved on to v1.5 and if forums were seperated not everyone would bother looking in the 1.4 section to see if anyone needed help or advice. thats what happened before and thats why the ubm v1.5 forum failed to take off. so many people had to stay in the regular sh4 forum for help and advice they just stayed there.

i understand the concept, it just doesnt work in practice. if you tried to seperate it now and found a way to make everyone move to the ubm forum you would see the regular sh4 forum slow to nothing and hardly get used. people will go to where the most help is and stay there and i dont see that changing. its not like sh3 and sh4 where the games are so different, sh4 v1.4 and sh4 ubm v1.5 are identicle in almost every way and only about 20% of the game files are different from one version to the other so that is why 2 out of 3 mods for v1.5 work in v1.4 as well without the modder even trying to do that.


now thats speaking of the forums.


as for the downloads section it gets tricky because at first glance you think its easy. put v1.5 mods here and put v1.4 mods there but so many mods are for both versions of the game in one download. you also have to decide do you want to take say 100 mods containing a version for 1.4 and 1.5 and ask modders to break them up and turn those 100 mods into 200?

IMO the downloads section would work best with 3 catagories:

- sh4 v1.4 and v1.5 mods

- sh4 v1.5 ATO mods

- sh4 v1.4 and v1.5 missions, tools, and misc.


as long as all mod titles are clearly labeled for the game version they are, there is no confusion.

My original intent was:


SH4 UBM/Gold: Mods that work for the game with the 1.5 patch, regardless if they are U-boats, RFB mods, US subs, GW mods, ATO mods, etc.

SH4: does not have the 1.5 patch, mods that work for this game will not work for SH4 UBM/Gold with the 1.5 patch. If the mod will NOT work with 1.5, go here.

But, I think if we add "mods that work for this game will not work for SH4 UBM/Gold with the 1.5 patch. If the mod will NOT work with 1.5, go here" that could be a problem, because some mods with work with 1.5 and 1.4.



Maybe there should only be one SIlent Hunter 4 category:

and let the user decide which mods fits his needs by reading the descriptions?

Well, how complex is the mod bank software? IE, can you add a tick box selection for mods and only have one section for SH 4, so when you upload you put your file, your description and there would be a new section:

US Campaign Tick
Gemran Campaign Tick
TMO No Tick
GWX No Tick
RFB No Tick
GFO Tick

Then people could search on mods that work with their mod flavour. Generally modders know what their mod will work with, or if they havent tested it, will have a good idea and if they find out later it isn't, it can be easily changed.

i think its more likely they are just hanging around untill the utility company turns off the power.

if the rents paid till the end of the month then it can stay open :woot:

then without warning poof your screwed so why take chances, download anything still there and put it somewhere safer.

i see it as just a chance to get any file you forgot to get before they shut down

This is NOT an April Fools joke I assure you all that the forums being online at this time is not a joke or something that is temporary. What information I have is that there will be more information to be expected sometime tomorrow. I myself am not entirely sure what is going on and why the forums are back online. I'll know when you know really. I was just instructed to let you know that this is for real and not a joke by any stretch of the imagination. I know many will not believe me because of the terrible timing, but the persons that I had talked to about this would never joke with me about this sort of thing.
