View Full Version : What's next after GWX3 Gold?

Hi,

Having been completed immersed in GWX3 Gold for some months now (real life is not as exciting!), and being aware of the progression from earlier versions of GWX's to the current one (without actually playing them), I couldn't help but wonder what the next GWX super-mod might be, if its to be at all.

Is GWX3 the last of the great GWX-flavour super-mods, or is there something the GWX team left out because they wanted to get GWX3 "out there"? Perhaps there were some things they couldn't quite finish, with a view to completing them in a later update? Perhaps there are some top-secret things already in the pipe-line?

Something that has intrigued me is how the GWX team managed such a monumental effort. Everytime I play, and especially when I consult "The Manual", it becomes clear that there was a significant amount of effort and research that went into the project.

It would be fantastic if the team could put a very short synopsis of the life of the project together. Perhaps this might include how it all started off (a suggestion over a beer or six for example), how it was structured, its progression, the major wins, the pitfalls and how they were overcome, the "hallelujah moments", some humorous moments etc. etc. I don't know if its listed anywhere else, but I don't even know how many memebers were in the GWX3 team, and who they are, and perhaps that might be included aswell. I know this may be a lengthy write-up, but I think it would make very interesting reading and surely the 'how it all happened' deserves to be up there with the GWX3 product itself?

It would be great to get some feedback.

Regards,
Dud

Great questions,

I to have wondered many of the sam things, I wouls hate to see GWX fade away from SH3..that would be a very dark day indeed. If Ubi would release the SDK I am sure we wouls SH3 around for many many years to come.

I hope to see some answers or insight to the future of GWX and SH3

GWX 2.1 was the last full version. 3.0 Gold is an update and finalisation of the cumulative work they did over the years. There are still things I would love to see incorporated, and individual members have made little add-ons that put some of those in.

The sad news, I'm afraid, is that they have moved on to a completely new world. The current project, announced even before 3.0 was announced, is GWX4, which will add the same feeling and depth to SH4.

As for the SDK, they have said that even with it it is too late to do anything more with SH3, as SH4 is the better platform to work on and offers even more opportunities.

And as for who they are, take a look at this:

[edit] Oops. Unfortunately the link is dead. I still have a copy and will put it up tomorrow.

Excellent - thanks Sailor Steve, that certainly answered some of my questions :)

Hopefully, some of the members will consider writing up the "how it happened" one day ...

Yes, I assumed the same thing SH4 is a better platform, sadly I think the U-Boat is the better sub ( in my opinion ) I would love to see a full U-boat addon for SH4 not just a addon pack. I guess what I am saying is SH3 with SH4 platform would be the most appealing to me at least.

Thanks for the updates !!

Then your wishes are granted, because GWX4 will be almost exclusively for the u-boat side, doing, as I said, the same things for SH4 that GWX already does for SH3.

SH5 is coming and is reported to be back in the u-boats. First reported release date is 4Q 2009.

I was thinking about this very topic first thing this morning while I was in my porcelain office. :DL

I haven't seen to many of the GWX team posting lately.

BBW , Kpt. Lehman , Penny , Privateer ect.

And I know I'm leaveing out alot of team members.

Is GWX4 just a Myth ? :DL

Yea. Sh4 is good. But I myself Perfer sh3. (well... until gwx 4 comes out.) I myself perfer the atlanic for the setting of a SH game. Guess because of how important of a player the U boat was in the war. (And the Large convoy battles, weather, Submarines going from the hunters to the hunted, ect.):yep:

Well if SH5 does ever make it off the drawing board, after assuming of course that it's going to need numerous patches and bug fixes before it's halfway playable, sorry Ubi just going off your previous track record, i am going to need a major computer overhaul just to play it.:nope:

You mean GWX4? It will work with the Add-on, I think, since it was designed to add on the u-boats.

At the October Subsim meet in Houston we asked Elanaiba, the lead designer, for details, and the only thing he would say then was that there would be one. As for release dates and information posted at the UBI forums, I would take them with a grain of salt. When SH3 and SH4 were officially confirmed, it came with screenshots and statements from theofficial dev team spokesmen, including him.

Until then, keep that salt handy.

I don't know where Neal's got his info from, but the Onkel is pretty reliable on these matters and he says the status of SH5 is Q4 of 09 and it will be "All new code; U-boats in the Atlantic"

We will eventually... but the story isn't over yet. It is still being written for SH4.:arrgh!:

Check the agenda for the fall SubSim meet in Copenhagen, SH5 is listed as a topic there. Unkel Neal takes good care of us here, and wouldn't post something like that without checking it out first.:yep:

Thanks for the feedback Kpt. Lehmann.

I feel I should apologise for the thread taking on a GWX4 theme (after having read the other GWX4 thread) - that wasn't my intention. I was just really interested in how something so huge was managed, and how you guys structured your approach. I probably didn't put enough thought into my original queries - my apologies again :)
