I've tried Trigger Maru, Real Fleet Boat, and stock (with U-Boat missions). While TM's "night" periscope does the best job of this, their "day" scope has the same problem ALL the others do...
...you can still fairly clearly see the ocean/waves/ships/etc through the blackness around the periscope eyehole. Just in slight color variations of it, but it's simply not 100% opaque.
(Oh, and while we are at it - anyone know what file handles the "picture noise" that is inside the subs with the stock game, but it seems all mods remove it? IIRC, this was also in the HQ room in the initial game release, but was removed in even the first patch. I did kinda like that.)

This is fairly easy to do.
Grab the scope.dds files and you have 4 layers, RGB and Alpha.
Make sure your alpha channel is as white (rgb=255,255,255) as can be, with a black hole in the middle plus the faded lens effect along the black hole perimeter
Also turn down your monitors gamma correction.

What's the best converter for .dds files? I have Photoshop Elements (2.0) and GIMP - the MS SDK to allow editting them supposedly only works with Photoshop 7.0+, so I haven't tried that. And I have an ATI system, so I dunno if the nVidia converter would work.

gimp works fine or you can use paint, net which is another free tool

Hmm...been spending some time with this problem and GIMP.
I can make the changes, and they do show up in game...but you can still make out movement from the 'shaded out' area around the periscope. Rather annoying. :nope:
No matter what I do with the alpha channel or texture itself, the background still shows through.

I think but do not quote me on this. If the fog is enabled in the game this happens. Again, I think this the reason.

It's entirely possible - it's a very similar effect to the 'see through crewmen' you can get on the bridge with fog enabled, only a lot more pronounced.
However, it's not that bad on every scope. As noted, the 'night' scope in the TMO mod actually isn't that awful.
