Hi,
few questions concerning the sharpy pointy looking thing seen here, right between the depthmeter and a tasteful photo of Heidi Langelegz:
http://img23.imageshack.us/img23/5026/shot72y.jpg (http://img23.imageshack.us/my.php?image=shot72y.jpg)

1. Would you stick your hand in there?
2. And what if I dared you?
3. More importantly, what the hell is it?

Thank you very mu- HIMMELHERGOT HERR LINDNER, NOT AGAIN!

Actually, that's not a photo, although it is tasteful. It's a Esquire Girl pin-up painting by American illustrator Al Moore circa 1951. As for the weird cog-like thing...got me. :)

I don't know WHAT it's for, but that kind of arrangement usually serves to prevent something from rotating backward unless the catch is lifted.

Otherwise, sorry, not a clue.

Also, will SOMEBODY do something about the anachronism of that drawing? :-P

I guess we could always convert her from 'girl next door' to one of 'girls gone Wehrmacht.' She loses a lot of the original charm though. :hmmm:

Ah, the kreuzbikini, not just a short lived French fad from the forties. Still, hell of a lot better choice than going commando in woolen sweaters.
(love the monocle and that whole laying on France thing)

Yeah...I think what's left of the Maginot Line is digging into her back.:DL

The thing is we got so distracted over her I don't we ever determined what that gear-like doohickey is. :hmmm: It does remind me of some of the workings you see in the back of a watch.

My guess is that it is some form of ratchet wheel although what function it performs is still unclear.

Yeah, or on some older engine hoists. The function there is simply not drop the damn thing while I stop cranking to sweat and pant and wish for an hydraulic one like a little girl.
In this much more detailed picture (http://www.flickr.com/photos/tprzechlewski/2468956860/sizes/o/) it looks pretty similar, you insert some kind of handle onto the red squarish part to turn the rolling chain seen in the background, kinda like a one-way bicycle but I still don't have any idea what would it actually accomplish on a sub.

To better answer this.

It was a tool used by the Kpt to weed out the dumb crew members.

How it worked was, a crewman screwed around with it and got his hand mangled in it.

And he yelled " HOLY JAHOSAPHAT " :D

It looks emergency enough, in that ripping-nav-officer's-table-away-and-screaming-at-him-to-crank-it-or-we're-all-dead way!
