View Full Version : DEMON on autocrew trackers?

So I'm a relative DW noob (coming from SH3/4) trying to run my (Seawolf) sub in the "let the autocrew do their thing and tweak things now and then" manner, and in general, it works okay. Most of the time, I can watch and even poke the sonar station even while autocrew is active. Sure, it messes around with the frequency, so if I want to sit on a narrowband contact and ID it, I need to temporarily disable autocrew while I scroll through the options.

The one thing that doesn't seem to work at all, however, is DEMON. It apparently won't let me select any broadband trackers that the autocrew placed. I can see them on the broadband display, and I can "tracker review" to switch between them, but unless I was actually the person to press "tracker assign", I can't seem to pull that tracker up in DEMON. (I've verified I'm on the same array as broadband, etc.)

Worse, if something already has a tracker and I try to assign it again (to get DEMON working), sometimes it replaces the old one, sometimes it puts down an additional one (ah well), but sometimes it won't let me apply a tracker at all. That wouldn't be a problem, except it still won't let me DEMON on the old (autocrew-assigned) tracker. :(

I've also tried deleting a master contact on the map, which also seems to delete the tracker associated with it. Trouble is, in broadband, I can't seem to get a tracker back on that particular signal. (Maybe it was too faint?)

Am I doing something wrong here, or is this just a bug?

Okay. I think your problem is that you're using your DEMON when the autocrew is using the other sonars. Try turning off the autocrew for the SONAR suite. Then manually put the cursor on the broadband signal you want. Then pop over to the DEMON. If the signal is strong enough, you should be able to assign it to a DEMON track.

I'm starting to think this is really just a bug -- that the system doesn't let you use autocrew broadband trackers in DEMON mode, but manually-assigned trackers work fine.

Here's a scenario. Sonar picture (auto-sonar, auto-TMA):

I had let them observe for a while, so the sonar picture is pretty much completely accurate:

For the purposes of this test, I'm interested in M01 (0004), a super tanker. Range is about 25k yards. My autocrew sonarman has already assigned tracker "L" to the tanker:

But, even if I turn off autocrew now, I cannot pull up any trackers in the DEMON screen. It just remains blank.

If I click on the "L", it goes away, and my cursor is where it used to be.

I thought this was a bug, but I now think it's a way to get rid of a tracker. The manual says you drag it into the waterfall display to get rid of it, but just clicking on it seems to be enough.

I can now assign a new tracker where it used to be:

(Thankfully, this doesn't confuse TMA in this case. They very quickly realise I'm just talking about M01 again.)

I can then get my DEMON screen just fine by hitting "tracker review":

So yeah... it looks like autocrew sonar and manual DEMON just don't mix. You need to assign the tracker yourself to get a DEMON screen on it.

Thankfully, I understand trackers and the sonar system a little better now, so it's not a big deal to unassign autocrew trackers and install my own for DEMON purposes. So, problem solved, I guess.

Okay. Here is what I found. It appears that designated tracks will not go to the DEMON. User designated tracks will go to the DEMON. I also discovered that if you go to the broadband sonar screen, select a track that the Autocrew designated, you can designate the same track yourself. Then it goes to the DEMON.

The only issue I found is that on the broadband screen.. say you have 2 tracks that the Autocrew designated A and B. When you go back and designate the targets, they also get classified as C and D (as well as still being designated A and B at the same time). It's C and D that will go to the DEMON. If you go into the TMA display, there will be only two targets listed. S01 and S02.

On Narrowband however, reviewing the trackers shows only tracks A and B

I'm unsure if having two tracking letters per track is a bad thing or not but this is how it's working. It may not be a bug. It may be a thing where the Captain has to check the sonarman's work and designate the target himself. ?

I think your best bet is to do your sonar manually. That's how I usually do it anyway.
