View Full Version : Strange Sub in FOTRS
I was on patrol in the Celebes Sea in 1942. Sound picked up a war ship. I closed within sighting distance and found a Jap Sub. However, this one had a sea plane on the forward deck, three large cannons, 1 forward, 2 aft. There is a large conning tower and it looks aws if the pressure hull sits on top of the ship. I surfaced to within 5500 ft. to attack with guns. This sub proceeded to pound the living tar out of me. I went to crash dive as I could not compete with this subs guns . I cannot find this vessel in the Museum. Any thoughts.

According to the description it must be the Sen Toku. It is in the stock game, but only for placing at dock. It doesn't do anything only sits there.
Miner made one AI so it would move around a while ago.

The stock Sen Toku has a flak gun on the front of the tower, two triple 25mm dual purpose guns behind the bridge on the upper deck, and a deckgun on the lower deck. I am not sure what is on the FOTRS sub.

I can take the pic if I can find the sub. However, how do I attach it to my post?

I ran in to two of these on a patrol and sank one while damaging the other, they take a good two torps to sink which was a surprise to me, i do believe it is the sen toku class will need to check my log

Dude that rocks. You can put it in the museum but only submerged, and the came in the museum doesn't let you get all that close to the units in some cases.
Perhaps you could show where on the map you found it. I want a crack at this sucker.

How do you add units to the museum? I would like to know.

well, I can't add them to the museum but I can reactivate some of the ones that are deactivated in one of the text files. Sen toku was in 1.4, deactivated in 1.5 museum. So I started pokeing and put a ; infront of the lines for the sen toku and it worked.
You can do the same with the dutchman. It's listered under netherlands the folder in data is "cruiser" I think.

The plane on the catapult is wrong (but we knew that...).
They had 3 Aichi M6A1 Seiran planes on board.
They were able to carry three Aichi M6A Seiran (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aichi_M6A) aircraft (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aircraft), each carrying an 800 kilogram (1,764 lb) bomb 650 miles (1000 km) at 295 miles per hour (474 km/h). The existence of the Seiran was unknown to Allied intelligence. The wings of the Seiran folded back, the horizontal stabilizers folded down, and the top of the vertical stabilizer folded over so the overall forward profile of the aircraft was within the diameter of its propeller. When prepared for flight, they had a wing span of 40 feet (12 m) and a length of 38 feet (11.6 m). A crew of four could prepare and get all three airborne in 45 minutes

So for the sake of accuracy someone should remove the airplane or replace it with the Seiran.
and remove that flight of stairs to the side of it !

If you use my Jyunsen B mod version 3.4 you'll get to command the Type AM, which is a similar sub but with only 6 tubes instead of 8 and two instead of three Seiran planes.
And a bunch of others..
But yes, ask Peabody, we should eventually include it in the IJN campaign mod.

maybe someone can figure it out ?
I know f.I. that a british sub sank a U-boot with torpedoes using asdic only while both were submerged during WWII.
would be nice ingame....

Wouldn't sub on sub action only work if the target is at PD? I mean, a WWII sub has no means to determine depth on a submerged contact. Heck, AFAIK even a modern sub doesn't.
And suddenly getting blasted without warning could be a frustating experience. :hmmm:
Don't get me wrong, I love the idea, I just don't know if it's feasible.

Keltos might be talking about a program on The History Channel yesterday ... "Hitler's Last Secret Weapon" (or something like that). The U-Boat was carrying a German jet engine ... trying to get to Japan. Didn't get very far (actually, the sunken U-Boat is doing more damage now, via escaping mercury from corroded bottles, than it would've probably done during the war).
The skipper of the British sub spent a very long time trailing the U-Boat before making the attack. Initially, the sub was directed to a point off the coast of Norway ... thanks to information gleaned from an Enigma intercept. Once in position, it easily picked up a sonar signature (a bad engine aboard the U-Boat made a lot of noise). The British sub then tracked via sonar and periscope (both skippers sailed at periscope depth ... the U-Boat kept raising its scope, looking for a promised rendezvous ship).
The British sub fired four torpedoes at about sixteen second (or so) intervals. The first three missed ... and the U-Boat was diving for deep water when the fourth torpedo hit, splitting the U-Boat in half.

you think they'd salvage the mercury...that much has got to be valuable.

:hmmm: Evidently, most of it is already "in solution" ... or in the nearby fish (North Atlantic whitefish sandwich, anyone?).

Maybe I missed something here, but I believe your referring to U-234, which was safely taken to Portsmouth Naval yard. U-234 was sunk, in 1947 off Cape Cod as a torpedo target for USS Greenfish, and one would certainly assume she was stripped of everything aboard, including said Mercury. If it was another U-boat you were referring to, my apologies for the confussion. The U-234 carried 1200 lbs of Uranimu Oxide and 2 Me-262 fighters.
The Documentary for purchase...excellent if you haven't seen it.
