As many people requested in the thread of my first release of the slide-out compass graphics, I have done an exact replica of the compass found aboard U-505 :yeah:

It took some time because I could not find good pictures in the web showing the compass, but the search finally paid off, and here are the results for you to compare:

The compass in U-505's control room:

It sure will, no incompatibilities with any other mods, except with my previous "slide out compass new graphics" for obvious reasons :)

Nice work Hitman! :arrgh!:

If there is any difference between them, have you thought of doing the compass roses from the Vessiko and U-995?

No? Why not? What are ya waiting for? :stare:

I get 3 conflict messages with the GWX Integrated Orders mod if that mod is enabled first in JSGME. Sorry but I don't remember what the messages said. I wanted see what this new mod would look like in-game so I disabled Integrated Orders to be on the safe side. Your new compass looks really good btw.

LOL Kaptain Lehman always pushing people beyond the limits :haha: ... so many years being GWX Team Leader shows off

Give me accurate pictures of those compasses and I will try to have a go at it :yeah: From U-995 I have found lots of pictures but in none was the compass visible :hmmm: which leads me to think it was removed from the boat.

I just checked and you are right, because for some odd reason the integrated orders mod ships the slide out compass in its stock form. Probably a left over from a previous version?

However, my mod just overwrites the graphics and that's all so you should be safe by activating it AFTER the integrated orders mod. It will overwrite the existing graphics and nothing else.

Its beautiful but i just wish i could make it a little larger so i could read the small inner degrees

Hitman
02-17-09, 03:18 PM
The small inner degrees you can't read are the "reciprocal" or opposite course to the large ones. Sadly the compass is very cluttered and to read them you would need a much larger image, which would be a bit invasive.

Nevertheless, you rarely will have interest in them :hmmm:

@Hitman

Is there anyway I can make this compatible with OLC's GUI, or rather Mikayl's Kombi which also uses your optics ? I know an OLC right hand slide out page already exists listing distance/hour/knot conversions...i'm not sure I need this so could I change it for your slide out compass ?

Sorry for all the questions of late, i'm trying to learn all I need to build my own setup even when conflicts exist by using Silent Enditor and WindDif etc.

Thanks in advance, Hans.

I think my brain must have finally given up the ghost because for the life of me i cant figure this new chart out. I had no problem with the old one. In fact before i knew it was on the right hand side i had made up a chart of my own on paper and used that.

When i get a report of a contact bearing say at 90 degrees from me is it the yellow chart i look at to turn in his direction and if so why is it not marked in degrees instead of being numbered 0 to 10. I feel such a fool asking this because i know its going to be something very simple.

Just read your question. The yellow inner ring is numbered 1 to 10 and each of these numbers has 10 hash marks make a total of 100. So each hash mark equals exactly 3.6 degrees. 25 hash marks then equal 90 degrees. Or 2.5 using the large numbers. Takes some getting used to.

The purpose of that compass in the real U-Boat was navigating, and not orientating yourself in the space (That they did instinctly just by being on the bridge, same as you always know where every room of your house is relative to your current position on it). And apparently, the strange division -as stated in the readme- has something to do with the navigation orders issued to the helmsman by the captain or navigator, either for course changes or for compensating currents, winds, drift, etc.

All navies have their own way of dividing the compass rose in parts that are not 1 degree, for the purpose of maneuvering (1 degree is usually too precise to be accomplished perfectly with a big ship for a period of time).

Thank you very much at least now i don't feel quite such a dummy after reading your explanation. Plus i found it very interesting also as to why is was not in degrees.

UPDATE for those interested in knowing what the strange division of the inside circle is....I have found out how it works:)

The inside circle is in fact a rotating wheel. It represents 10 degrees, and is there for a quicker visual estimate of course change and for increased precision in steering.

How it works:

The inside wheel will do a full turn each time the course is changed 10 degrees, and it can be used for very precise smaller course changes (Even a tenth of a degree). Consider it a sort of "magnification" of the main compass dial, or you can also think as example how your average analog wristwatch works: For each hour mark the small pointer displaces, the large pointer (minutes) does a full turn in the sphere. It works exactly the same but instead of 1 full turn=12 hours small needle/1 hour big needle, these compass dial wheels work as 1 full turn=360º compass rose/10º in the inner wheel.

Here is a video where you can see in minute 2.04 how the inner wheel does a full turn for a 10 degree course change in the main compass wheel:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kYWTt1HuSMc

And here is a link to the present day Anschütz company, which still manufactures gyro repeatesr using the same system of two wheels, large (360º) and small (10º):

http://www.raytheon-anschuetz.com/index.php?StoryID=141&pid=43

Obviously the in-game graphics I provided will NOT work like that, nor can I think of a way of having them work so, therefore we are stuck with a fixed inner dial.

Happy hunting all :salute:

Updated info #2

Aparently the same two dials compass division was used in the US vessels:

The compass card on top of the spider assembly, Figure 34, is clearly visible just below the glass cover of the binnacle. Bearings can be read in tenths and hundredths of a degree. This is made possible by two concentric dials having a 36 to 1 displacement ratio. The entire circumference of the outer dial is divided into ten major divisions to indicate ten degrees of arc so that each major division corresponds to one degree. Each major division is subdivided into tenths, and each tenth is large enough to estimate hundredths. Actual bearings are read against the lubber line fixed on the head. The inner dial carries 36 divisions, each of which represents ten degrees of arc. When the ship makes a complete turn of 360°, the inner dial makes one revolution while the outer dial makes 36 revolutions, or one revolution for every 10° of arc. The speed ratio of the dials is therefore 36 to 1. See sketch on page 28.
