OK, unless I am missing something...

I completed my first patrol, and sank my "target ship"s and I was gigged for sinking neutral ships and received -800 reknown.

The 1st patrol starts on August 2nd.. Germany is not at war with anyone until Sept 3rd, 1939.

What gives?

According to the GWX manual. several boats sailed in mid august so they could be in a position to blockade england if such orders ever came.

obviously German high command had plans in the works... so they sent out some "front line boats" well before any hostilities became official.

Just complete one patrol, dont sink anything (my opinion) come back and then launch out to sea on patrol #2... head for the western approaches and await things to get hot.

A Very Super Market

You also start out with extra renown anyways.

You are given extra renown in that flotilla for that very reason
Everybody is neutral on that date period so any ship you sink is neutral

From the 2.1 update release thread

***August 1939 career starts engineered by Bigboywooly:

GWX now has the ability to start in August 1939

For those choosing to start in the 1st or 2nd flotillas it is recommended you carry out a 4 day shakedown patrol before returning to base on the 4th
This will give you a next patrol date of the 24th August
Plenty of time to sail to your start point
For those wishing to begin in the 7th flotilla you will start at Konigsberg
Stay in the bay and sink the target ships and 2 ship convoy

Do not take any damage or you will miss the war start
You will become an enemy of ALL nations so " ESC " back to port on receipt of message
http://i60.photobucket.com/albums/h22/bigboywooly/ScreenHunter_001-3.jpg
Upon ending patrol you can either transfer to the 1st or 2nd flotillas
http://i60.photobucket.com/albums/h22/bigboywooly/ScreenHunter_002-4.jpg
and your next patrol will begin on the 24th August
Good hunting

Ok.. thanks!
I have another question:

I am receiving alot of radio transmissions from other U-boats.
ie: "Convoy AM 3316 On course - East"

How do I read this? Is it AM 33?

Sorry, I was a solider not a sailor. I can give you a 10-digit land grid. Is this a 4-digit grid?
ie: AM 3.1 x 3.6 ?

Those are historical messages and you wont find anything there
So you dont feel alone

Each KM grid is subdivided again to allow more accuracy
