View Full Version : Removing ships from the campaign
Scenario: Let’s say you’re out cruising the North Atlantic and you see the HMS Hood and you’re lucky enough to sink her. You RTB, get a metal, and head back out to sea. On your next patrol you’re out cruising the North Atlantic and you come across the HMS Hood!?!
Does SHIII remove ships from the campaign file once they are sunk? If it doesn’t I’m almost positive there are ways to add/remove ships from the game by the date. Is that possible?
Darn, sorry I thought I put this in the mods workshop forum...

Sadly, no it doesn't in the stock game. Neither does SH4. The ships just respawn. You can sink every capital ship in the entire Royal Navy or the Japanese Imperial Fleet. They just come back for more.
It's possible that GWX addresses this. Somebody will know.

Umm, no. It would make for a stupid game if there were limited capital ships. Without them wandering around, we don't really have much to try and find. GWX does not remove them from the campaign, and I assure you, it's better for it.

Not really. The primary target of the U-bootwaffe was Allied shipping, not enemy capital ships. There are plenty of merchant hunting grounds, and there are far more merchants than capital ships. If you removed the HMS Hood, Warspite, etc, how much of a dent would that put in the number of enemy vessels at sea? ;) And personally, seeing and/or sinking the HMS Hood several times over would kill immersion for me.

Unfortunately sinking a ship does not remove it from the campaign
Lets take the Hood as an example
ALL the Hoods movements are scipted
So if you sunk it on 1st day of the war all of the other entries would become null and void - if SH3 worked that way - so removing large chunks of the campaign
No point having Hood V Bismark if you already sank the Hood and game removed it
But SH3 doesnt work that way
The Hood will re appear at every scripted instance of the ship
The Hood will disappear from game at the date sunk in RL as will all major units
You could go through the campaign yourself after each major sinking and remove the ships yourself
But as I said you will have to remove each operation the ship was in too - or replace the Hood with another unit which wouldnt be right either
SH4 hinted at doing something along the lines of removing a unit after sinking but never made it into game
Just as well or you could go crazy in Sept\Oct and sink the home fleet
Sink every escort at every opportunity and find no warships once classes exhausted
Till new ones come online
I've lost count how many times I watched the Nelson go down. Oh well ;) :20: :nope: :up: :48: :24: :()1:
Have to agree with Weiß Pinguin there A Very Super Market. I usually pass up most capital ships, destroyers, armed trawlers, row boats with irrate fishermen and go for the merchants 98% of the time. We just have two different styles of play. I should have probably explained that in the first post but I didn't think it mattered. I under the impression that there was a line of code that would not allow the HMS Hood (as an example) to appear in the game after the historical month/year it was really sunk. I was hoping to be able to tweak it for whatever Capital ship I (or one of my collegues have sunk) I'm actually a participant of W @ W and was asking for that reason.

You can tweak the ships cfg to alter exit date
Not sure if game will CTD if unit not available and still scripted
ClassName=BCHood
UnitType=10
AppearanceDate=19201211
DisappearanceDate=19410525
DisplayName=HMS Hood
[Unit 1]
Name=HMS Hood
DOC=19201211
DOD=19410525
\data\Roster\British\Sea
Thanks bigboywooly.
Just changing the date would of course be the easiest thing to do. I'm hoping when the scripted events with (in this case) the HMS Hood appears it will just be a less scary taskforce.
Alternatively I suppose you can change the date find a "generic" alternative and do a find and replace to substitute. Less "Historical" but then again so is a U boat sinking the HMS Hood.
:arrgh!:

Hey, do what you will. I'm a pretty realism-oriented guy myself, I don't actively hunt capital ships, but given the choice between a medium cargo and the Hood? I would definitely sink her. And is it unreasonable to think that a frustrated skipper wouldn't do that?

i agree
you dont come hunting for trouble unless its merchants!
if you happen to see the hood, go for it!
@ A Very Super Market
I agree with you. I doubt very much a U boat captain would have passed up the Hood! I'm into Uber realism especially playing with the guys and girls over at Wolves at War. I just want to avoid seeing her (the Hood) over and over and over.
Personally, I've only seen a battleship once or twice I think since playing the SHIII (I mainly only play when I'm playing for W @ W). I don't remember if it was the Hood. I know I made at least one unsuccessful attack. I've never sunk one. I did get a escort carrier once! I've lost count of the merchant tonnage I've sent to the bottom.
<S> and happy hunting!

Unfortunately it does.....tried that tweak too many times to my cost :oops: :DL
@ Jimbuna
Ahhhhh, that's bad news... :cry:
Thank you, you saved me some heartache testing it. Have you tried to swap out one ship for another for future scripted events? I've been so darn busy I've not had the time to test yet. IMHO that would be an acceptable compromise to get to where I want to go.

Same for me. Kind of wish Ubi had done a little more with the dynamic part of the career.
Ah well, maybe when they release the SDK to use someday. :yeah:

Only if specifically scripted in....or you could use a random factor but you would have to omit anything of the same caregory I should imagine.

You can swop out like for like easily enough
As long as you havent sunk them all
:haha:
SCR doesnt allow generic entries - class names have to be included unlike RND
By "Generic" I meant a "generic" destroyer. Destroyers in SHIII are like the Ensign wearing the red shirt in old Star Trek episodes.
