View Full Version : Bird watching contest - name this bird

Well, not really a contest, but it may be fun. I've been setting up feeders in my back yard, which resembles a zoopark. I am seeing more and more birds of a wide variety. I'm not really an avid birdwatcher, and I'm quite ignorant of species (that's a black bird, that's a blue bird, that's a cardinal--that's about it for me  ). So, what about if I post a pic and you guess/research/ID the bird. There could be a prize or two. Be sure to cite your source. If you agree with someone's answer, feel free to second it with your proof :)
Bird #1 American Gold Finch

They look better in summer, but you won't see them in Texas in summer.
They are sometimes called "wild canaries".

I never knew they change colors like that, I'm use to the summer colors. Interesting.

Keep in mind that particular types of seed you put out will attract particular types of bird. So, if there is birds of a varity you like look for that seed they dig. Of course friggin starlings love any old crap you put out and they show up in the thousand eating it all, scaring off the other birds and crapping all over the house and car. :88) BTW, keep it up and a few neighborhood cats will be around the way for look at the new lunch counter:o

The birds predict the weather for you Neal. If the feeder is very active with birds, bad weather is coming. Here in the Mid-Atlantic states, snow is coming if the feeder is abundant with birds. Just another way nature helps predict the weather. So, if you are dipping to the 30's your feeder will probably be active. Question is, do you want to be standing in 30 degree weather taking pictures. :hmm:

Beautiful creature. Not sure on this one Stew. Looking at the foliage, it is just like my neck of the woods. Eastern deciduous woodlands. Hmmmmm. I can say I have not see this in the wild. :hmmm: I will dig around.

We have to look at what TX has for owls. All I could come up with is a Ferruginous Pygmy-owl

Last one was an indigo bunting. Very striking bird, at least the males are. Good singers too.
Here's another one from a summer hike

Saw a couple interesting birds while out walking today.
First one should be pretty easy
http://i203.photobucket.com/albums/aa312/jbstew278/0d333448.jpg
This one is a little tougher, mostly because it was perched so far up I couldn't get a good photo. Size wise the bird was larger than a blue jay, but smaller than a crow.

I guess the top one looks like a broad winged hawk. The other is a hawk but what king I can not tell.

Not quite, it is from the genus Buteo, but think of a larger and more common species. The broad-winged hawks are in South America this time of year.
The 2nd one I can't say for certain either, but I've narrowed it to 2 possibilities; both from genus Accipiter.

Alright, the top one was a red tailed hawk (Buteo Jamaicensis). It doesn't look like it as much in flight there, but it was clearer when it was perched in the trees.
The 2nd one I think is a Cooper's hawk (Accipiter Cooperii). I had narrowed it to either that or a Sharp-shinned hawk (Accipiter Striatus), but based upon the size I'm inclined to go with the Cooper's hawk. The Sharp-shinned hawk is roughly the size of a Blue Jay, whereas the Cooper's is about the size of a crow. This bird was a bit too large to be the Sharp-shinned

It is a hawk for sure. You are probably right with your pick of a Coopers. We have red tailed hawks in my neck of the woods. I did not think about it but yesterday there was a huge turkey vulture on my neighbors trash can. It is a damn big bird and bit ugly as well. I did not think to take a picture.

They are a strange bird. See how they hold their wings out while perched? I wonder why the do that. Perhaps to pick up some heat from the sun? I have seen them do this when they end up around my house for some critter on the road flatten by a car.

This one was too timid to move where I could get a clear shot, but you should see enough of the distinguishing markings to identify it
