This advertisement page of the "The Maru Special - Japanese Naval Vessels - #31" p.3 shows a very detailed blueprint of part of a Jyunsen B, namely the forward part of the tower and hull.

I haven't found the whole blueprint anywhere :nope:

can anyone translate what it says ? (Yattky ?), maybe there's a hint as to where to find the whole blueprint ?

I am also in dire need of good detailed blueprint of Kaidai (1 through 3) submarines, as well as I-47 (C2 class) submarine.

Am seeking plans myself as well for any B & C Type for use in converting the Lindberg 1/72 subs that are due to be released in several months.

We've got a few guys over at SubPirates working on this as well so I'll pass along anything we find.

Sorry but for the Jyunsen B I only have afew pictures and the part of the blueprint seen here above. This model lacks the rear top rudder ! only the guard is there...

beautiful model(s) as there is also the I-53. I would ask them where they got their blueprints from , wouldn't you ?

or is it just made from photographic evidence ?

Didn't the Navy extensively study those boat prior to scuttling them ? being an archaeologist myself I can't imagine they didn't draw them ?

Questions been asked.
http://www.j-aircraft.org/smf/index.php?topic=7087.30

But these blue prints while around are not always in public hands. The I400 blueprint was returned from US archives. I suspect the archives from the industrial companies that built the subs will have plans. But don't hold your breath expecting to get anything from them.

Have already been down that road & been in contact with Lindberg-Hawk's owner, Ernie Petit. He advised only that they obtained most of their reference material from USN sources but that's as specific as it gets. Based on they're having to make last minute changes to their tooling - release is postponed another two months - I wouldn't be surprised if they cobbled it together from photos & whatever they could get their hands on. No wonder there aren't any aftermarket guys interested in turning out kits for these beasts.

I tend to agree that their should be drawings available if they haven't been passed back from the National Archives.

Totally forgot about J-aircraft & will spend some time tonight doing some digging.

Thanks gentlemen!

IJN Kaidai type 7 submarine :

26 December 1942:
The I-178 is completed at Mitsubishi's Kobe Yard, commissioned in the IJN and based in the Sasebo Naval District. Cdr Utsuki Hidejiro (former CO of I-5) is the Commanding Officer.

The I-178 is assigned to the Kure SubRon with the I-177, RO-106 and the RO-107.

Developed from the KD6 type, these attack submarines had an endurance of 75 days. Differences from the earlier type include concentration of all tubes forward, and slightly improved operating depth. The most notable naval successes by this class were both achieved by I-176. I-176 damaged cruiser USS Chester off Guadalcanal on 2 October 1942, preventing her from participating in the Battle of the Eastern Solomons and the First Battle of Guadalcanal. That boat also sank USS Corvina patrolling off of Truk on 16 November 1943. Polmar and Carpenter state that was the only instance of a Japanese submarine sinking a US submarine.

Seven of these boats were sunk within one year after commissioning, and all ten of these boats were lost by October, 1944. I-176, I-177, I-180, I-181, and I-185 were all sunk by American Destroyers in 1944, while I-182 had a similar fate a year earlier. Also in 1943, I-178 became one of very few submarines sunk by a submarine chaser, and I-179 was lost when a hatch was left open during a training dive, less than a month after completion. I-183 was sunk by USS Pogy (SS266) in home waters in April, 1944. I-184 was sunk by depth bombs dropped by an aircraft from USS Suwanee on 19 June 1944. These boats were originally numbered I-76, I-77, etc. They were renumbered in 1942.

wow, Keltos you have found a LOT.

sorry to be late to the party.

OK, what subs do you need? I know a retired USN officer here in my town who was there at the scuttling of the I 400s and was on some of the other boats, i can try asking him..... if you have specific boats you need.

I can also ask at the Nimitz Museum, they were kind enough to reply a while ago on records and info.

will do what i can.

Well look at the shape of the Bow, curving up and rounded on the sides, those are Kaidai 3a boats from Subron 9 (number on port side of sub in the background), so I might have to check my KD3a tower and change the front part... if you look at the above picture one can actually see the strange tower, with hindsight that is ! though it looks as if the one showing the whole sub has more viewports ?

I have few very detailed interior plans somewhere. (much more detailed than most of those seen in this thread so far)

I have to search my library and scan them; then I'll upload them somewhere.
Give me a couple of days. :)

If you're looking for photos, drawings and technical data, there's Erminio Bagnasco's Submarines of World War Two. Some of the reported data, however is inaccurate. Most of the figures floating around the net (like the entries in Wikipedia, or the pages of Combinedfleet site) take the info from that book. Arguably it's the most comprehensive catalog os subs employed in WW2

I've found and scanned a high resolution, ultra-detailed KD-7 blueprint :D
(My favourite japanese sub!). I also have a few others blueprints of similar quality of less known sub types.

Problem is, the two images are 15-20 Mpixel and I don't want to resize them down because, otherwise, the fine kanji prints won't be readable.

I'm at work now, I'll try find a hosting site when I'm back home. Have faith! :yep:

Nope, they are proper blueprints (not just the siluette). Here they are in all their digital Glory :) There is enough detail to even reproduce the interior, if some modder would like to. I've been tempted in the past to pick up 3DStudio and Photoshop to create it, but this is one of the many projects I shelved due lack of spare time.

Do that, make a model in .obj with uv1 and uv2 layers, make an AO map (.O01) a N01 map (normal map) make sure the tower and the hull are separate objects and...

I'll be happy to include it in the IJN Campaign mod

From what I've seen from the design drawings the on deck plane storage?? the bulbous space in front of the conning tower?? This is the same length as the plane's fuselage and not much wider...
So how does it fit??
Visited the shipyards & museums in Japan where they have great models (but no real documentation) and the explanation I got was "They MAKE the plane fit by disassembling the plane until its small enough and SHOVING it in"
By which I assume they mean that to fit the Yokosuka E14Y scout plane?? in the approximately 8m long by 2m high cylinder, the tail section (rudder and horizontal stabiliser), as well as the propeller, are completely removed to allow the 8.6m long fuselage to fit???
Then some magic is performed on the wings to make them also fit... being almost 1.7m wide and 5.5m long and the central part of the cylinder being occupied by the fuselage???
Whatever space is leftover is filled by the floats and struts???

What are the dimensions of the hangar?
Do you have any photos of it?
Is the Plane a Yokosuka E14Y scout plane?
Do you have its dimensions?
And photos of it in the hangar?

Thanks
