View Full Version : GWX texture locations
Phantom II

Hey guys
I'd just like to know where the submarine interior textures for GWX are kept, as I'd like to modify some of them (for personal use of course) but I can't seem to find the texture files.

I'm not an expert and maybe a professional modder here can enlighten you better than I.
They are in dat files that can be opened with skwasjer's
S3D - Silent 3ditor program. I've used it to change onboard photographs mainly.
Give it a try. It's very simple to use. :D

UberTorpedo:
I'm familiar with S3D as used for changing sub draft, wakes, etc and I opened some sub .dat files to try to make some graphics changes but have no idea which file impin the long list acts/controls any specific interior graphic. Let's use the various pictures for example. What file controls them (choose one as an example if you would, please) and how on earth do you decipher the obscure text in S3D to know what will happen? Trial and error?
Any help appreciated.

Example: follow this path ==> data/submarine/NSS_Uboat7b/NSS_Uboat7b.dat
Open .dat with S3D.
Go to Embedded image ==>

Right mouse click to get this ==>

Now click the last box [Embedded image]. Chose the working folder you want it to occupy and it will be saved there as a .tga. Open with an appropriate photo editing program. Now Import it back in the same way it went out. Note the [Import] box just above the [Export] box
Here's some tutorials:know:

You'll have to look through the files for various interior textures because I don't remember exactly where they are located. But search around. It's not hard.;)

Uber...:
I wrote a lengthy thank you earlier and then the whole system went down. so I'll try again, pardon some confusion.
First thank you for the prompt and complete reply. I do appreciate it.
I interpret what you said that is that one exports the 'Embedded image' file from S3D into a graphics editor, that when one exports it S3D converts the hex file to a .tga file and one gets an expanded list of .tga files (or one of those multiple images in one cluttered screen that is common), that you then look at the .tga image (images?), modify the section or the image one wants to change, save it as a new .tga file and then export that file back into S3D (that is, use the "Import" function of S3D to bring that file into S3D), which translates it back into a hex file that SH3 can read. I had thought one needed a special 3D graphics editor in order to do this kind of thing. I can see the value of S3D if one does not need such a specialized program.
One question: does the Embedded Image file contain all the graphics that are used to create/paint the imagery for the entire sub interior? Seems a heavy burden, unless the Embedded Image file expands into a large file of various .tga files.
I'll cut it off here to make it short. Will give it a try and see where it goes.
Again, thanks for the assistance. (Hope this time the message goes out.)

Uber:
Gave S3D a try with the *.dat folder and the Embedded Image file and, as you said, one can easily edit the sheet of .tga images that comes up and then import it back into S3D and thus to SH3, but that involves only the hull...not anything in the interior of the sub. So you have helped..I've learned a bit, and every bit helps, but I still don't know how to get onto the path of interior modification.
I suspect for that one needs some expertise with one of the 3D graphics programs. Philip Tomsen suggested I try Iambecomelife since he's done a lot in that regard.
And I'm still looking for those modding tutorials that used to be in the forum.
Thanks again.

Thanks privateer,
I was incredibly tired  when I posted that "tutorial" for Archive1. I fell asleep about ten minutes later :dead:.

Uber and Privateer:
Well, I guess some humor is appropriate, but when I look at the S3D file for NSS_UBoat2A.dat, I find the only .tga file in the list at Line 3 Typ_2A_Hull.tga. The rest of the list through node 248 EOF, indicates no tga file and nowhere do I find the term "Interior" - the rest of the nodes seem to be related to bubbles, engine, siag, doors, etc. Maybe you could point out where the interior node is? Selecting Line 4 Embedded Image gives me (as one would expect) hull .tga files for editing, but of course no interior editable .tga files, which are the ones I was asking about.
Maybe I'm missing something.
Just trying to get some information and assistance here. And have seriously tried to do my 'homework' before requesting help.

Yep, you're looking in the wrong place.
Try here - C:\Program Files\GWX 3.0\data\Interior\NSS_Uboat2\NSS_Uboat2_CR.dat

Danlisa: OK, now I'm on track...I knew there was some basic thing I was missing as a rank beginner. Appreciate the help.
Uber: No offense taken. (Same to you Privateer, I know you especially have a lot on your plate. I think I remember you've replaced Lehman re: GWX). As a post Air Force front line squadron member, I can take a lot of sarcasm-nothing can compare with a squadron ready room. Whatever, always appreciate the assistance given by forum members.
Cheers.
