Hello
I have just downloaded the game. I do not know how to start playing. I went to sub school. Nav. to start out, but I can't get anywhere cause I don't know what I am doing. So I hope some one can take me under there wing and tells me how to get where I am suppose to go in my first try. Since it is cold in Michigan and I can't sleep very well I thought this would be a perfect game for me. Figuring out all this stuff would be good but now I have found that I do not know how to do anything. I wrote UBI soft and they told me to come to this site for help. So here I am. Hope there is some who will lead me on to get me from the dock to where I am sppose to go on my very first trip in my sub.

Welcome mozgovoy to Subsim.
Did you get the patch for Silent Hunter 3 version 1.4?
http://www.silent-hunteriii.com/uk/updates.php
If your running Vista when patching right click and run under admin.
The patch has an error showing version 1.3 thats fine.
Once done then I suggest downloading a super mod example GWX 3.0

To get started. They have a huge manual to read which will give you all the secrets of the game plus the how do you do this and that.
Later when you have more experance then try other mods.
Happy new year and drink responsibly. ;)

Welcome to subsim, Mosgovoy.
The academy is easier once you work out that the M key will bring up messages telling you how to complete them. For some reason this isn't covered in the instructions at all and has foxed many new players. You also need to read the information in the pre-mission screens quite carefully before leaping into the academy mission itself.
SH3 is a submarine simulator so I'd recommend completing the academy then playing in stock SH3 (patched to 1.4b as Wolfehunter has said) for a good few missions before going to one of the supermods. The AI has been cranked up in all of them so surviving is a lot harder and can be frustrating if you leap straight in.

IF you decide to add GWX 2/2.1/3 to your gaming experience please know that sub school becomes very difficult - don't get upset and throw in the towel.
Start with the "practice" exercises first to get your feet wet prior to taking each exam. Don't rush through sub school. One mission is designed to teach you how to set a plotted course - tools along the top of the screen upper right - map is available by hitting F5. Take your time piloting the ship, making necessary corrections and getting used to the various key controls through the first mission. It's very straight forward but you can learn a ton from what is presented.
***
As to torpedoes, get used to using F3 to go to the attack periscope - and you can hit TAB to zoom in. One thing to keep in mind - IF a ship is further away than 10,000 yards and your zoomed to 10X, you may barely see it at that distance. Don't immediately lock onto the closest 500 meter ship - look to it's left, and further away will be a larger merchant.
This exercise was created to help you understand attacking and moving to get best positional range. Yes, you can sit and just turn the ship, but it's best to start learning how to move and attack - otherwise known as Tactical Strategy.
Yes, you can keep doing automatic targeting, which makes the game easier - BUT there is a true challenge waiting for you in SH3 - manual targeting. Talk about fun, *woot*
***
The flak missions against air targets will test you, and don't be surprised if you fail the first time. Plotting a course quickly is key here, along with getting crewmen to the flak gun once you decide to attack - if you survive that long.
It will also teach you damage control, knowing how to effect repairs on your ship will be key here.
***
Lastly, is what I like to call the Kobayashi Maru experience. Exam 4 will put you into direct combat against a convoy, but they will fight back - be prepared to have your eyes opened the first time death from above reigns down in the form of destroyers.

Good luck and welcome to Subsim...

Second the motion.
P.S. Play the first few missions at 0% realism, save often and replay when sunk to learn from your mistakes. Unlike in real life, you can "do over".
