Well here I make a new install and add the GWX in...try to launch and it asks me for a product key...Now I bought this from D2D and digital dowload for SH3 as far as I can remember doesn't need a key...what gives..
any help would be appreciated...

When you bought from D2D,
They sent a code by E-mail
Check you e-mail stuff.

Well heres the kicker...I went to my account and ( I have bought both RS and SH3 from there...) my RS does show a reg key but sh3 doesn't. I just clicked send info for both games. I recieved one for RS but not for sh3, and upon looking in original emails didn't find one either...I did skip the installation of gamespy when I reinstalled...would that matter?

No, The Game spy stuff does not matter.
But D2D does send a key by E-Mail.
I have the U-Boat add-on for SH4 and Il-2 something or other
from them.

Both times I got an E-Mail with a Key.

You need to contact them with as much info as you can give them.
They have been pretty good with correcting problems
from what I have read.

If you paid with a Credit Card?
That information is recorded.
So, it may be a bit of a hastle,
but it should all work out.

Im downloading it again from D2D...well see when its finished it I get a key...

The Silent Hunter 3® game does not require a unique key to unlock the game.

Here we go round the mulberry bush.....

first sent to D2D, they referred me back to ubi...Ubi then returns the volly and now its back in D2D's court....are we making progress...stay tuned..same bat channel, same bat time

I purchased SH3 through a D2D download. I have recently reformatted and upon installing SH3 again it is asking me for an activation key. The game did not come with one. They have referred me to this site for the solution.
