View Full Version : Is anyone interested in a skinning tutorial for the VIIC?

I caught the paint slingin' bug again and I'm working on a new project - with this I'm posting a bunch of updates over on the boards at BtS-Mods.com so I'm wondering if anyone is interested in a skinning tutorial for the VIIC as this sub skin progresses? For a current link to my work so far: click here (http://www.bts-mods.com/forums/index.php?topic=996).
It's a project I've had on the back-burner for quite a while, when I was working on the Christmas banner for my site I came up with a new technique that's helped me keep my colors together so that makes things easier when it comes to the final adjustments so I'm going to try the same with this u-boat. It's taking cues from some of Yamato9's subs and I figured I'd try to put my own twist on the design idea!

Go for it.
The more info there is out there, the greater the likelyhood that others might take up skinning.:yep:
Where the fock you been Dan?! :-?

Please do. I'm very interested in skinning (I've done it in other games), but unsure of the best processes for skinning subs in Sh3. Tips for doing weathering effects and rust would be good too.
Maybe Fubar out there would jump in with some weathering advice...Fubar, Fubar, where art thou, Fubar?

Slowly but surely it's coming along - I really shoulda picked an easier skin to make a lesson out of because this one is so daggone time consuming but so far the basic idea is coming out. I'm working on that tutorial in that thread as I go along, it should come out nicely

I'm getting to that in this lesson just as soon as I finish the basic look of this u-boat

You could use my templates to help your tutorial. Their already available. ;)
I've notice many new skins have some base components of my templates.
Unless your trying from scratch...:hmm:

I'm actually using my templates for this - I've got it all setup so that the waterholes and just about everything else is set up in its own specific layer. That way when I'm done with one I can move on to the other  At the end of the tutorial I'll upload some template PSD's for people to play around with.

A few hours later and I'm getting into the nitty-gritty of it all and I would highly recommend this thread (http://www.bts-mods.com/forums/index.php?topic=996) to anyone trying to learn how to skin a sub cause a lot of my cheat sheets and shortcuts are being disclosed  After this lesson is done I think I'll do others as well that will cover more ways to make your own camo patterns using Adobe CS!
I actually just made a whole new board for these lessons too so other sub skinners are welcome to jump in and share their techniques as well!

Ok this is about 95% complete, most of the basic instructions are in that thread and I'll start making mini-lessons to help go more in-depth into skinning. There's a link in my sig for all your sub skinning needs, it's a constant work in progress but my hope for this is that by showing my techniques off, more people will want to learn how to design their own skins and contribute some to the community. I'll keep adding on to these lessons as I go along, but if anyone has a request for a specific design method then please let me know in those boards so I can keep everything organized

Fantastic Offer. I wish I had the brain cells to take advantage
of it. I am one of the oldest in the forum and finding that
my concentration is not what it used to be. I will stick with
admiring our modders and working on silent hunter addict.
BTW: You guys make this a great forum.

It's a project I've had on the back-burner for quite a while
Your back burner has enough room for Hell's Kitchen to host a show with...
Make a Salvation Army Shelter look like a campground kitchen...
Could serve a Subsm meeting with 40 burners left over...
Make Wolfgang Pucks restaurant look like he was using a Easy-Bake Oven...
Should I continue...Ive got a back burner full of em...
I had to...:yep:

I firmly believe anyone can create a sub skin, or a mod for that matter, regardless of concentration or knowledge, that's why I'm making these tutorials. Everyone here has the ability and imagination to create something, for the people who don't know where to start I'm just helping them find a foundation to build on. If you'd like to do it let me know, I'm always willing to lend a hand

No it disappears too quickly. Don't bother bottling it up either it wouldn't be of any use
