My son is planning to download SH4 with the UBoat add-on. He will either download SH4 with the UBoat add-on via Ubisoft or Steam. Here are the questions:

Can he mod the Ubisoft download?

Can he mod the Steam download?

Can he only mod from a copy he installs from a disk?

I downloaded mine from UBI D2D and the 1.5 add-on when it came out from a banner here at Subsim also from UBI D2D and have had no problems with mods... or anything else.

I also use Multi-SH4 to have a clean install and also modded installs. I did buy the SH4 hard copy in a box just to 'have' but have never opened it.

Hope that helps....

Happy Hunting!

You can certainly mod the Ubisoft download. As for STEAM, I can't positively say but I do know that on other STEAM game downloads, mods don't work.

No crap? :o

yet another reason for me to not buy stuff through Steam....I was just eyeballing a couple of games too, but I do need them to be moddable.

I would avoid Steam at all cost. The security Steam uses may hamper mod-ability.

I personally would try and find SH4 Gold, so a single install is straight to 1.5.

I had the D2D version and it worked quite well, however, it should be noted that I bought the Gold edition from Walmart when my HD crashed a few weeks ago and I have had fewer bugs/glitches. Just thought it was worth mentioning. GO WITH A DISK.

While I didn't d/l the game through Steam (own the main disc, and d/l the expansion from ubisoft), I am surprised that there are issues with mods on the Steam versions of games. I hadn't heard that before (for any game) and I tend to buy all my games through steam since it's my favourite DD distribution method.

It would just surprise me because Steam is made by a company that knows full well the value of mods, and in fact some mods can even be directly loaded into Steam and run like any other game.

I purchased the bundle version off steam a few months ago, and it's basically a nightmare to get it to work right.

With all three versions downloaded I was able to play SH III, but SHIV and SHIV uboat missions did not work at all. I was able to successfully play SH III, and got some soundpack mod to work with it. On another occassion I did a fresh install of SH III, and was able to play GWX 2.1

I then reformatted my computer, and only downloaded SH IV, which ran, then downloaded SH IV uboat missions, which did not work right. The game ran, but you could not access the german campaign option. After deleting everything, and then a redownloading of SHIV and SHIV uboat, followed by integerity check of uboat (which resulted in the game updating), and then a second integrity check of uboat (which resulted in a second update), I was finally able to access the german campaign. From there I was able to mod the game to Trigger Maru 1.5, which ran fine, until two days ago, when I accidently launched the game under SHIV instead of SHIV uboat, which caused steam to update my files, and screwed up the mod.

I then deleted everything in disgust, followed by a new install of all three games. SH III is installed, but I have not even tried to launch it, as I am waiting on GWX 3.0. Hope it works. SH IV download, followed by SH IV uboat downloand and integrity check resulted in SH IV uboat being playable, but once again without the option to play as German, so whats the point. A second integrity check resulted in an another update to SHIV, but then it won't even launch.

Long story short, Steam versions will work with mods, but its a real pain to get SH IV uboat to run right, so if you can get the games from D2D, or retail go that route.

well not entirely through if you purchase a game through steam i think it can be modded i do that with GTR-evolution which comes in a box with Steam included. But games that are bought in a box with no Steam included or online not through Steam cannot be updated or Modded. Only Purchasing through Steam or as in my case with steam included can you MOD and update.

But Steam is crap in my book it's just another way to sell you a lot of crap and adveryising you never want and it makes you PC slower. It takes ages to Start Steam up and in the mean time your PC doesn't do a thing

Lucky you can switch it off

Indeed, this is true for all Valve games (e.g. HL2, they also develop STEAM) but not true for all 3rd party games.

I have used the D2D version since it first came out (before patch 1.1) and have had no problems whatsoever. In fact I prefer it because I don't need the disk to play the the game and have installed it on both of my computers. Mods are no problem at all.
