Hey guys...
Bad news for some, good news for the vast majority ( ), Thomsen's modding days are ending.
The year is ending and my journey is getting near. For those who don't know, I'll hit the road with a backpack (bag?) and get out there in the world. I've left my job (I work with IT, support and development), and the moment couldn't be more perfect. All the money I had I left in a fund for investment, so the money will be left behind, growing, while I'll hit the road penniless for 3 years. If one day I really need that money, I'll have it, but the main plan is to live penniless for the much time I can. I think the biggest treasure is life is knowledge and wisdom, and I think money is just a mean to and end, otherwise most people. I'm very sick of society and all I want in my life right now is to get out there, live the life to the full. Like Kpt Lehnman's signature.
I live in Curitiba, Brazil. The plan is to go south, out of Brazil, Uruguai, Argentina, Chile, and then take a merchant ship to the west coast of Canada, and travel east to Halifax, on foot. That will take about one or two years. Then I plan to go to Europe, visit a friend in Netherland. The travel is the journey, and not the destination, so I'm not much concearned where the hell I'm gonna end up. Might pay you guys a visit in the next subsim meeting, if I'm around. Sure would be great. To be very honest, I think one of the things I'll miss the most, beside my friends, is this lovely community. Every day when I get home, the first thing I do is to turn on my computer and check this forum for news and other stuff. It's just amazing, I love this place and after one year, ended up with some good friends. Plus I do love modding, perhaps more than gaming, so it has been an amazing experience, and I feel that every minute I spent in this place was not wasted.
I'm not sure when I'll go yet... I have a little money outside that invested one, which I don't plan to touch. In the last days I'll sell this computer, and with the money buy a backpack, a tent, a sleeping sack, a knife, and some survival equipment. When the moment comes and I sell this machine, I'll post my last post. Who knows if I'm gonna die out there, so I'll wish farewell for everybody here.
I don't plan to be near people, cities, civilizations... I want to be alone, find myself, spiritual revolution or something like that. I'm not afraid of dying. I'm afraid of not living. And living in this society is sh!t, each day worst. In 50 years, this whole place will be hell (cientifically proof), so I rather be way north near alaska, or dead.
For all my mods.... I don't plan to be modding anymore. Anybody, feel free to continue my work, change it, take credit for, ruin it or make it better. I really don't care. I wish all of you the best. I really with I was around to see GWX 4, or SH5, but there are more important things in life than gaming.
Maybe if I get around a computer anywhere (we never know) I can post something about my adventures here, for those interested to know.
All I want of technology with me is music. I just can't live without music. I'm taking with me a 80gb mp4, which contains all my music... enough for 2 months of 24 hours/day listening without repeating. To fuel that, I'm planning to buy a solar panel recharger... I saw one in the internet for $150 if I'm not mistaken... does anybody of you guys know anything about that kind of technology and the price for it? Any info would be appreciated.
For moderators, I didn't know where to post this, and since I spent 99% of my time in this forum in the sh3 mods workshop, I would like it to end here. Well free to move it, if it's necessary. I'm not sure how things work about profiles, if they are deleted with time, but I would like to keep this one. Who knows, I might be back someday, 3 years from now, modding something for sh5.
So, maybe I'll go in next week, or might stay one more month... depends on the money.
In any case, I thank you all for the chatter, the laughing, the enjoyance, the fights... it was a great season and I won't forget this ever.
Sad to see you depart, happy you will traveling and TRY to interact with people along the way like Jack Kerouac (sp) but in my own travels I would suggest a bicycle some panniers and such. One lighter on your back and far more enjoyable.

At least wherever you go there will be a far chance you wont have to go hungry.
With a community of this size spread over different countries all you will have to do is go to a internet café open a thread and say where you are and am sure a hot meal will be offered.
I hope you find what you are looking for out there and I wish I also had the courage to do something like that.:yep:
Keep a good wind in your sails and a calm sea as pretty as in you mods beneath you and a safe harbour to lower your anchor and keep your feet warm at nights.

Hey guys...
...I don't plan to be near people, cities, civilizations... I want to be alone, find myself, spiritual revolution or something like that. I'm not afraid of dying. I'm afraid of not living. And living in this society is sh!t, each day worst. In 50 years, this whole place will be hell (cientifically proof), so I rather be way north near alaska, or dead.
You might have reached the crossroads friendo :yep:
For sure it smells and looks like **** every single day that goes through in this bloody failure for men to live together, but the main problem with your plan my friend, in my own opinion of course, is that your human nature as my own human nature is not meant to make you or me able to stand alone in the Wild, unless you meet some people somewhere and start all over again a new life.
As human beings, we are all doomed to live together though we do not share much and regarding to Death, remember about mods, it comes when it comes
I have been travelling into Wild Africa for ten years now and since my first step on the Sacred Soil of Mankind birth, I have been convinced that one day, I will go and settle there so that my deeper dream comes true: enlist as a volunteer for Wildlife preservation and do my best to allow future generations to witness the true meaning of Life from the wild side (sounds like a Monty Python movie title ... :hmm: )
We pushed too it too far as they say but there should be one place in this bloody world where you might find out what you are looking for.
And for this, friendo, I wish you all the best.
Remember that your strength is your mind, your body will follow the way.
I have much respect for what you are about to do. Means you have been thinking about leaving for a long time and now it is time to pack up.
Take care, go forward and moreover, keep your eyes wide opened to enjoy every single second of your journey.
Good luck friendo

Safe journey!

People together is one thing. But society as it is in big cities is sh!t.
Life is simple, people like to complicate it. They like to make a game out of it. Like a rpg or something. Fill life with stupid rules, cos they think it's more fun. Well, I dont, I hate it.
I want out... Want to go out there, be on my own, no maps, no watch, no television, nothing... you know? Nature!
Perhaps once in a while get together with a bunch of hippies, cos like you said, nobody is made to live alone. But sure I love to stay alone for some periods of time. Like in the game "the sims", my "social" bar takes days, even weeks to get empty, I just love to be on my own...

You know... I've always felt like there was something wrong with the world, like a splinter in my mind... I just couldn't explain or understand why I didn't like to do anything, and why I always felt that carrers are a torture, a pain in the ass... After watching that movie, I finally found my place in this planet... that was trully an inspirational movie, basically saved my life. I was really starting to think about killing myself in the last few years.

That reminds me of a book I read. A favourite author of mine wrote a book in which a particularly nasty character eventually dies and meets Death. Death is a tall skeleton in dark robes, with a scythe in one hand. He looks like that because that's how people think he should look. It's that sort of book. Anyway, Death takes this man's soul to a place where there are no other souls, and before leaving the man there for a hundred years Death turns to him and says:
You may have heard the expression that "hell is other people". In time you will discover that this is not the case.

Want my advice ? Life is simple indeed if you know how to handle it right. But I don't think you found it simple though. Honestly I think you skipped a lesson of life about living in a society and being happy with it. You may blame big cities or the whole world, but that wount bring you inner peace. And deffinetly wount solve your personal problems. "Stupid rules" ? and law perhaps (if you ment that way) were created to push out chaos from a society and to create order amongst it.. You may call life a game, a drama movie, a comedy or whatever you like, but how you call it wount change the point of it. And from my point of view it's useless to dig into it searching for the meaning of life you know.
You want to get out ? to feel the nature ? Cool! Soon you'll going to find out that nature itself is much more cruel stuff than fullfiled, happy life in society. Of course not everybody fits into society. For those people the cause of it in most cases are mistakes made in their past or accidents (crimes, drugs/alchohol abuse, houseless ppl, suffering from serious mental or physical illnes).
You mentioned you had thoughts of commiting a suicide ?
Do you feel outcasted or missunderstood freguently in RL ?
Do you feel lonely and having difficulties in finding other part of you in RL?
Are You trying to keep things right but your struggle with it leads to knockdown usually ?
Do you think you have a bad carma, which limits your ratings in success ?
If answers are yes you really need help believe me. No nature or separation from other human beings wount bring you any good while you in such mood about life. Remember - nature does not like weak animals or other weakened lifeform.
Nature is having LSD drug effect. If you try it while in good mood and high spirit it will boost that effect even more. But if you feel sad, bad, or having other negative vibes it will pull you down. So in other words nature helps for those people who can enjoy life itself and everywhere.
So my advice is don't do this if you care for your life. :nope:
But if you so desperated to leave the home. Get a flight to Tibet, find a monastery and ask the permission to stay. Oriental soul medicine is way better option than loosing yourself in the woods :) You should be able to feel better after half a year.

I plan to do that (monastery, somewhere in the orient) in some years to come.
Problem is not 100% the society, I have a big share of the guilt.
First, I hate to work. It's a torture to me. I see no point.
Second, I think that working to pay bills and having children to perpetuate the mankind is absurdly redundant and spending a life with that as the main objective is wasting a life, passing blank. You only live once, you cant afford to have fun in another life. This is it.
So, I never wanted to get married (marriage don't exist anymore, it's all about sex, but that's another discussion), and I don't want kids too. In 50 years, this world will be total chaos, a hell to live in, so I don't want to put new people out there just to suffer. Consider how much life got worse in the past 20 years. Consider that this worsening is exponencial; the more people, the more people. In 50 years, the world will be a real hell to live in. If you guys have the time, watch a docummentary named "The 11th hour". A lot of truth is keep away from the midia so it don't cause panic. I'll go north, to the coldest place I can find. In 50 years, it will be kinda hot, but still nice. That IF I live 50 years, which I really don't want to. The only real thing keeping me alive is my curiosity, I really don't have any focus, any objectives, any purposes.
Like I said, I'm the one with problems.

I hate to work too. But if you find a job that suits your likeings it stops being a pain in the ass. Plus you get money for a decent living. I don't see anything wrong in it acctually. do you ? Currently I'm jobless myself, looking for about any job cuz due to financial crysis it's very hard to find what I want, and yeah, bills needs to get paid, and I like please myself going to cinema from time to time, have a tasty meal, get drunk from time to time, I just want to enjoy life and without any money ? Lets be realistic it's kind of impossible right ?
Your paranoid view on the world future is kicking your ass I see too :) Who fooled you so ? Relax there wont be any armagedon. Think positive! Get rid of that insane panic you have. I know the media and sciencentists keeps warning us about global warming, melting of the arctic ice and rise of ocean level, but if it's natural cicle of the earth what can you actually do about it ? :) Get into panic before time ? It's just stupid.
Why do you think about whats going to be after 50 years ? Live your life this day, tomorow you'll do the same. Get a girlfriend, marry her, raise kid(s), in order to be happy when u're going to be really old. Leave a mark after yourself.
Or you wanna be just one of the selfish sceptics all the time ? I bet you don't.
The way you don't wanna be closed person here.
And for the problems. EVERYBODY has the problems. But their size depends on how you see it and take it to solve. :yep:

LOL!
You guys need to read more!
Hundreds of people already did what I'm planning to do.
You guys are to tied up on money that living without it seems impossible.
But remember, capitalism, fast food, carrers, ostentation, this is all 21th century inventions, and I really don't want that. People lived very happily before that.
Just stop and analise the world around you. Guys with BMW's, nice suits, running around like crazy, worried about tons of things, all the time talking in the cellphone. And on the other side of the sidewalk, a garbage man, talking to a hippie, both laughing a lot.
I'm not saying I want to be a garbage man, nor a hippie. I just don't want to be the man on the suit, so involved in a lot of stuff that he doesn't have time for himself. And with a live so dependent on money, that he actually believes that money is what brings happiness. He's already blind. The joy of live comes from new experiences, and this is the undeniable truth. How can one have new experiences working everyday with the same thing, on the same place, talking to the same people, returning to the same home, on the same car, to the same wife, to watch the same shows, and pay the same bills. Can you do that? Congrats! Cos that makes me just crazy. Feel like dying, and dying very fast. That's why people search for news everyday, something new, something that could change his/her live even just a bit. The joy of live comes from new experiences, and out there, where new experiences comes each and every second, I think I'll have a ball!
Once a dying man told me this, and I never forgot: "Life is a whisper... You come, tell a story, and disappear. What story will you tell?"... That really shoke me up. I want to have a nice story to tell. I want to, if that's the case, die with 35 years old and be able to tell that I had a awesome life, that I've seen it all, and that I'm really not sad of dying young.
New experiences don't need to be good experiences. ANY experiences. Live a life in porsue of that and I assure you, your live will be happy, and in the end you'll have tons of stories to tell.

:yep:
PT,i think that Contact said them all ! i think that you have to reconsider,
everybody had gone through difficult situations, this doesn't mean that you have to start running like Forest Camp.
if you like to communicate with a lot of people try find a job that have to trade with lots of people.job is something that give you sometimes (exept the money which is the main purpose) moments of hapiness ( in fact everything that you do in your whole life gives you only MOMENTS of hapiness.you see there is no man that is huppy ALL the time !....only crazy people are huppy always )
if you don't want family ...is ok ,you want to be by your own...is ok,you like travelling then you can do your travels in periods and i am sure you will enjoy them far more (its something else to travel always)
and remember ...there are always things in life to grab your interest ! (see... this community;)) don't blaim the job and don't expect always the job to get your attention .i agree with you that there are a lot of thing to grab you!
as CONTACT said........RELAAAAAX ! as YOU said......life is simple ( you make it complecated)
i hope that you will get logical ...soon
bye

Reconsider what?
This is not a overnight decision! I've planned this since february!
I want to be a writter, and so I need some living experience. I want to write a book about my travels, the daily journal, and another book, a romance, ficticious stuff, but based on all the stuff I learned.
From this 25 years of my existance I realised I was not borned to be living in society.
This thread is not a claim for help, for you guys to change my mind. This is goodbye!

Go for it PT!
I was 22 years old, just divorced, and needed something.
I chose to join the Army and jump out of AirCraft.
For several reasons actually.
But the primary reason was so I could go to Egypt!!
I got to go inside The Great Pyramid,
jump with the Egyption AirBorne,
have several lovely hikes across Barren Desert landscapes,
and more!
After I left the service I went 'walk about'.
(Except I used a '68 Triumph Motorcycle, so I guess that would be
ride about!)
Saw a lot of the U.S.A, Canada, and parts of Mexico.
Worked odd jobs just for enuff gas to make it down the road
a day or two.
I get asked sometimes if I regret those 'wasted years'.
My answer is always HELL NO!
When one gets the 'Wonder Lust?'
They have two choices.
Go! (Even if it's only for awhile)
or
Not! (Then, years down the road regret not doing it)
I'd much rather try and fail.
Then not try at all.
At lest I can always say I tried.
It's the things I did not try that I regret!

OK PT now you're changing the whole point of your journey. Noticing that ? First you said you wanna get out of civilization, since you're not happy about the society and stuff, now you're wanna smooth things down to one who just looks for an adventure and wants to write a book, how nice . Searching for the fools whos going to believe this crap yeah? So make up your mind for god sake and don't tell one thing, then think of another, just to change the whole subject, just to see how people react.. All I can say you're just not REAL man.
Just look at yourself. Complicated adventurer, *******in Dora the explora, who wants to die young, and I bet wants to be famous over the internet. You just can't live without paying attention to yourself do ya ?
The man who creates problems and then suddenly wonders where is the problem can't be treated seriously.
Yeah and rather then creating mods you should try to create a time machine. Maybe in medievals you'll find yourself a role of some kingdoms clown..

Maybe they did, maybe they didn't. Who knows? Answer? Not you. You weren't there.
Just stop and analise the world around you. Guys with BMW's, nice suits, running around like crazy, worried about tons of things, all the time talking in the cellphone. And on the other side of the sidewalk, a garbage man, talking to a hippie, both laughing a lot.
You've seen The Matrix too many times. It's a good film, with a good point, but I'm wondering if you grabbed the wrong end of it. After all, you've never been that guy with the BMW and the cell phone.
*dons lecturer hat* :know:
Morpheus shows Neo that the world is a machine. People in the world are slaves to the system. Anyone in the system can become an "agent" i.e. anyone who puts the system above all else loses their humanity. Fair enough. You obviously get this bit loud and clear.
Morpheus also teaches Neo that if he believes in himself, and if he sees the system for what it really is (an illusion) then he can do anything he likes inside the machine. It's important to note that outside the system he's nothing - just flesh and blood, and no more or less than any other man. When you watch the film, which parts make you whoop and cheer? The parts where Neo is in the Real World, or the parts where Neo is kicking ass in the Matrix?
At the end Neo finds that can't do any of it alone. He needs Trinity. The purpose of the character called Cypher is to show us what happens to the Neos who don't find their Trinitys. If you're the romantic sort you can take that to mean that a man is nothing without a good woman, otherwise you can take in the more general sense that people need love (of whatever kind) from other people. Either way, it comes down to one thing: other people are both the reason and the ability to use the system to your own ends.
The next two films in the series are an overly-long discussion of free will vs purpose. Smith values purpose, Neo values freedom of choice. So, purpose is bad and free choice is good? Well, think about that suit you mentioned, running around babbling on his cellphone. What makes him so... energetic? Purpose. Just like Smith. So the suit is an agent of the system, right? Another plugged-in souless cog in the machine with no free will. Or is he? Did you ever think maybe he's Neo?
Here in the UK, not so long ago, two policemen watched someone drown to death because in the specific circumstances it would have been illegal to save the person's life. They are the agents/slaves to the system, and that is what the film is trying to warn you against. In my opinion, the film isn't trying to say "rise up and overthrow the system!" After all, everyone knows that the only result would be a new system. The film is trying to let you know that (a) it is a system - some people don't even realise that, and (b) you can beat it, use it, twist it to suit your purposes, but you don't have to be any more trapped by it than you want to be, and you should not sell your soul to it.
I bet that by now my patronising teacher babble is probably making your blood boil, but I must add one thing: another good film to watch, before you go, would be Fight Club. You'd like it, I think, if your homophobia can handle the gay subtext. ;) It's the same sort of thing but much better in some ways. It's also entirely metaphorical from start to finish, so put your thinking hat on and enjoy.

The only thing you have to fear is fear itself. Go out and explore the world, accumulate life experiences, meet people, have fun. You're a long time dead so carpe diem.
As Robert Browning would say "I hold that a man should strive to the uttermost for his life's set prize", and this is written on the back of Ernest Shackleton's grave.
If you don't have a "life's set prize"...go out and find one:up:

It's not what you say that matters.
It's not how you look that matters.
It's what you do that matters.
I've seen many people fail
because they could not do what they said they would.
Mostly, they failed because of fear.
It's easier to say something is to hard or whatever,
then to face those fears and plow through them.

You want to walk the World?

Many things will happen!

At that time you'll understand.

I have always been much more curious than cautious.
Since a kid, I always ended up screwing myself badly sometimes, just for curiosity.
That never changed. And you know what? If fitted me pretty good. I regret nothing.

Telling us about it was the first and last thing he did.
Oh, and it was the middle thing too.
And the thing just after the first thing.
And wasn't it also what he did just before the last thing?

PT, I've not tried what you're about to try (and probably never will) but I understand your need to escape, explore and discover. You need a fresh perspective!
So I hope you discover a place in the world that feels comfortable and right. I hope you find a way to channel your creativity - whether it be writing, or something else - and that your work rewards you and others.
And I hope you meet someone to share things with, as I believe there is nothing to make the soul happier than sharing good things with a soul-mate.
I'm lucky. I have these things, except maybe the place, but that's enough for me!

I have lived through much, and now I think I have found what is needed for happiness. A quiet secluded life in the country, with the possibility of being useful to people whom it is easy to do good, and who are not accustomed to have it done to them; then work which one hopes may be of some use; then rest, nature, books, music, love for one's neighbor - such is my idea of happiness.

Just remember Thompson: you are part of society and society is part of you. Where ever you go you can never escape yourself so it is inner peace you should strive for. This is an internal process you can have anywhere!
However, it is a great idea to travel while you are young and it will give you experiences and memories for the rest of your live. You should make that journey, just try to leave those desperate (and adolescent romantic) emotions behind. Travel but don't run away.
Hopefully you will learn that all is relative and it is completely up to you how you define the world and yourself.
The world ending in chaos in 50 years is just a theory like many other theories.
One could also say mankind is going through puberty, we are making mistakes but in the end we need to make them to understand what is the right way to preserve the world and ourselves.
Best of luck to you and don't end up like that guy in "into the wild".

It's not like that. I'm much more open-minded then it looks.
Think like this. In 1920, the world had 1 billion people. Now, 2008, we are approaching 7 billion. Consider this outrageous increase in population in this short time. Now, don't forget, this is exponencial: the more people, more people. 2 rats give birth to 4 rats each, to it's 8 rats. But 8 rats giving birth to 4 rats each, that's 32.
In 2050 we will be surpassing 12 billion people, and I tell you what: this planet with 12 billion people is going to be hell. Unemployiment hitting records, hunger, misery, pollution. Most people will be living in garbage. And the temperatures? In 2050, both poles will be ice-free. The equatorial line will be a total desert, inhabitable, super-hot. The consequences? The natural disasters? Have you any idea?
All this is not fictional. It's not "just another theory" like you're saying. This is DATA! This is cientifically proof. If no actions will be taken and people continue to procriate like rats, all above is going to happen, and much more.
Most people (if not all) don't even believe that. I'm sorry, you'll judge me badly here talking like this, but it's just the way I believe: people crapping in their own plate, thinking that some divine providence will fortuitously save them from disaster, selfishly thinking that someone, some organization, the government maybe, should take care of it for them, after all they are all too busy taking care of their own nose, that there's no time to stop and think about it, help in any way. "Screw it", people think... "I'll not be here anymore when the planet starts to collapse, so why should I care?". Well, big news! It's going to be hell shortly, and you'll be here to pay the price.
Eintein was right... "There are two things that are infinite: the universe, and the infinite human stupidity... And I'm not sure about the universe."
I'm not having any kids of my own. Doing so, it's less people to make the world even worse. And I'm jumping in the wild, so I'm not producing 1% of the artificial garbage the rest of the people are doing. That's pretty much all I can do to help, as a single individual. But what f*cking difference does that do, if all the other 6,99 billion people are crapping around as much as they can?
Now, what do you do?
I'll tell what you'll do. You will forget all that you've just read, believing blindly that it's all fictional, believing that you're living in a solid environment that will sustain the good quality of life you have, 100% free, doesn't matter what you do. You'll keep on with your life, and little by little it will get worse and worse, but you'll not notice it, cos each passing day you'll get used to the fact that the world is crappy just like it is, and has been since you borned. You have your television and your internet to distract you, as you ill. Flawless.
But wonder... how better was the world when you were a kid? Exponenciate this same amount of time to the future, worsening, and you might get a clue.
Now you think I'm too concearned about it and I should kick back and relax, like all the other people you see on your television. And the only reason you think that way is because you see no one except me worring about it. So the majority wins, and I'm wrong.
Blind nation guided by the media.

Don't get me wrong, I do respect your choice and I do agree with most you are saying about this world. In an way, I wish I still had your outlook on life as I used to have, it's more simple and everything is categorized.
Quote: "This is cientifically proof".
Mind you: conclusions made from scientific data are always reflecting the expected outcome of the scientist interpreting the data. No scientific "fact" can be considered equal to truth...
But, I have traveled, I have been on the fringes of society AND I have tried to find my role in "normal" society.
Some say; "lead by example".
I think modern society / mankind / earth only have a chance to NOT end in chaos when more people like YOU try to play a responsible role IN society. YOU could actually be someone who helps change "fate" by showing others how to lead their life.
Again, your visions are right, do your travels and gain even more wisdom.
But...all in due time.
Enjoy the walk of life :know:

Alright, that's a valid point, but not a very strong one IMO. I agree that people are generally happier when they have more personal space and there are more resources to go around, but I don't see that either of those are going to be in short supply anytime soon. I live in London (one of the most overcrowded places on the planet) and although I'd like more personal space, I can't say that the lack of it is ruining my life. As for resources, well, most developed countries throw away vast quantities of food every day, and I can't see water ever being much of a problem on a global scale. That just leaves air which, admittedly, has less oxygen and more CO2 every year, but again it's a far cry from "unbreathable". My lungs are screwed (20 cigs a day for 13 years) and I live in a polluted city, but I'm not gasping for breath yet.
But all of that really is beside the point. If you look for what's bad and wrong in the world then you will find it easily. And if you want to believe that things are getting worse then you will find evidence to support that too. You'll find whatever you're looking for.
You say the population has boomed in the last century. True. Also, mankind has set up a global communication network which allows people from all over the world to pass information amongst themselves in seconds. He's setup education systems which have just about everyone on the planet being able to read and write from an early age. He's had (and, importantly, documented in a format that anyone can understand) what will hopefully be the last large-scale conflict of humanity. He's walked on the moon. You seem sad that we're not all zen buddhists already, but you forget that a century ago most of us wouldn't have even known what it was or how to spell it.
Oh and by the way, there are periodic plagues/deseases/viruses which come along once in a while and wipe out large portions of the population. The world is a lot smaller now, metaphorically speaking, so the next time such a virus hits us it'll likely spread worldwide in to time. In case that makes you feel any better. :hmm:

I agree that people are generally happier when they have more personal space and there are more resources to go around, but I don't see that either of those are going to be in short supply anytime soon. 2050 is not soon. I live in London (one of the most overcrowded places on the planet) and although I'd like more personal space, I can't say that the lack of it is ruining my life. For now. As for resources, well, most developed countries throw away vast quantities of food every day, and I can't see water ever being much of a problem on a global scale. You need to update your database. The planet plus the technology have the hability to sustain a certain number of people in the planet, and that number will soon be surpassed. People will start to die due to lack of food in 20-30 years from now. Same for the water. Here in Brazil, water is starting to get very expensive, as well as other parts of the world. Not a problem in London yet. Is what I said above, you're thinking on THIS MOMENT, and I'm refering to the FUTURE. This moment? Yeah, sustainable... liveble... but still a pain in the nutz. Too much people fighting the same space, traffic jams, lines for everything. It's very irritating. Life would be awesome with 1/10 of the actual number of people per square mile. But it's not going to happen, it's going to get worse. Soon it's going to be maddning, and I assure you, we are all going to be here to suffer it. That just leaves air which, admittedly, has less oxygen and more CO2 every year, but again it's a far cry from "unbreathable". My lungs are screwed (20 cigs a day for 13 years) and I live in a polluted city, but I'm not gasping for breath yet. If you start gasping for breath air, it's already too late for anything.
But all of that really is beside the point. If you look for what's bad and wrong in the world then you will find it easily. And if you want to believe that things are getting worse then you will find evidence to support that too. You'll find whatever you're looking for. It's not the bad things around the world the problem. It's just consequence for the population grown. Too much people. The illness, unemployment, pollution, starvation, misery, temperature... everything! The root of all those problems is the same: Excess of people.
You say the population has boomed in the last century. True. Also, mankind has set up a global communication network which allows people from all over the world to pass information amongst themselves in seconds. He's setup education systems which have just about everyone on the planet being able to read and write from an early age. You seem sad that we're not all zen buddhists already, but you forget that a century ago most of us wouldn't have even known what it was or how to spell it. Technology is good. But a remote control that can deliver pizza and a television that can change channels by voice command is not going to make this world better, only worst! Technology is always being directed into crapping useless stuff for the consumer. The values are all upside down. Status is the only thing people go after these days, screw the rest. Technology should be used to help us, instead of blind us.
:hmm: It's going to be necessary a hell of a plague to fix this mess. Say 90% of the people on the planet are killed by a desease? The collateral effects on the planet are already too severe. The natural disasters and the overheated planet will stay for more 200 years, at least. Then it will start to change for better, will heal. But give it more 300 years and we are back at reproducing like rats, filling the planet. If people could put in their heads the simple fact that excess of population is the cause for all sorts of trouble, and for pete's sake, keep only 2 children per couple, the population would gently decreases. Think: two children, replaces the two parents when they die. So far, fair and square. But there are umpredictable deaths, accidents, deseases. So the populational growth would be negative. All the people on the world would feel the good results in 200 years or less. Two children a piece sounds like enough for me, but instead of that happening, we have some families with 15 children. I mean, whatta hell is that? How can those people be so blind and selfish? 15 children don't mean 13 more then the ideal... they will procriate as well, so it's exponencially a disaster.
I could go on and on but you get the picture.

Wikipedia to the rescue!
Oh, wait, technology is pulling us apart from each other.
Let me redo my answer.
Theodore Kaczynski? Never heard of him. Now get get the hell out of my personal space already. There's too many people around me, that's why I spend so much time talking to them on the internet, you know - to get away from all the people!

@Thomsen
A writer call Tertullian once said: "We are burdensome to the world, the resources are scarcely adequate for us... Truly, pestilence and hunger and war and flood must be considered as a remedy for nations, like a pruning of the human race becoming excessive in numbers."
That was in AD 200.

 Are you done already ?
Think of where this discussion will end ? Everyone will stay up to their own minds believing their own built true.
Moderators should think again on locking this thread on limited period of time due to christmas and no hard talks about this nonsence. Please ? :)

Contact, if you think this is nonsense, you don't have to read it, and uttermost, you don't have to reply to it. Freewill, you know?
I'm not trying to convince someone here, like "guys, this planet is going to waste, join me!", even because if I did, it wouldn't make a difference. The planet is still going to waste.
And I don't expect anyone here to understand that. The midia did a great job raising each people personality like it is now.
I'm not running away to canada cos I think the planet is dying. I'm sure the planet will die after I die, the problem is in the hands of the future generations. I'm doing what I'm doing for several reasons. First, I feel the call of the wild. Second, I love cold and hate heat. Brazil is terrible, way too hot. Besides, I want a good live experience so I can express that in my books, I intend to be a writter. On top of all that, I want to see the world as beautiful as it is, as it was intended to be saw, before it's too late.
Truth be told, carrers are a 21th century invention and I don't want one. Money is a passport to live in society and it's useless outside of it. From where all the stuff you use money to buy comes from, it's for free. So tecnically, you don't have to spend a buck to get everything you need. Money just makes it easier, more confortable, for the lazy ones. And everybody is lazy, me included. Midia did that. 200 years ago, people really went after the stuff, nowdays it's all prepared, delivered in your hands. For some people, this is good. Makes them fat and die from a heart attack at 60's, due to lack of any exercice. For others, the excitement is to go after it, to hit the road, to experiment each and everything on it's right way. It depends on each individual person, that's why I told I'm not trying to convince anyone. I'm just expressing my point here, so others can express their thoughts on it, and we have a healthy debate.
So, very mature the idea of "You are wrong and I'm right, being so, lock this thread cos I want to bullie to thread-starter".
I want to hear what you think, and counter-argument, or agree, depending on the situation... what's a forum for? I thought people liked to chat!
@OLC... I don't want to be alone forever. Nobody lives alone. Happiness is only real when shared. But instead of talking to those bunch of brainless pieces of meat that I find on those busses, I rather talk to some guys here at the forum, cos truth be told, we are a bunch of nerds, and nerds uses more braincells then the normal beings, and have more good arguments to mount and develop a nice discussion.
Having a strong opinion is always better then having no opinion at all.
There's no right and wrong. There's each person's point of view, depending on each person's personalities.
Everything is valid if isn't dumb. To each his own.
