if there are any modelers out there who, like me, want to sail in the propper U-47 VIIB then could they let me know if they'd be willing to undertake modeling U-47s conning tower:

if someone is willing i'll say this in advance - thankyou! thankyou! thankyou! thankyou!

actually, U-47's tower didn't have a splash gaurd (the vane in the center of the tower) and as far as I know, that model employs a high amount of unrealism. the wintergarten is not circular, there was no deck-mounted AA Gun, and the large free-flood slat directly under the towerdidnt look like that. there are pics that show the U-47 looking more like a VIIB as you would see in SH3.

hmmm:hmm: then perhaps my generic book is rather incorrect. ohwell, thanks for the headsup mate. by the way, were there any deviations made along the production line to VIIBs??? it's just i've seen pictures of boats that differ slightly but of VIIB class. do you know anything of that?

most certain this is a picture of U-47 returning to germany. note the different slope of the conning tower to the aft.

So far the absolutely best article written about modifications of U-47 is the one by Dougie Martindale posted on Modelshipwrights:

Here's a good shot of the old "Snorting Bull" of the U-47 for you all.

Cheers! And good hunting.

ahhh interesting. so pre-war --> early war U-47 DID have a deck mounted 20mm AA gun aft, with a different slope conning tower. later in its career it was fitted with the standard VIIB conning tower complete with deck gun. anyway, this is the stage in U-47s career that would be great if someone could model:

sort of. except it doesn't have the break at the top of the conning like the VIIC did, and the railing to the aft of this tower is actually different to the VIIC. this tower has almost eliptical railing (from a bird's eye view) much more like the WW1 boats actually.

i think with U-47 to begin with they just slapped on the conning tower from the VIIA which they would have had left-overs from production.

it seems logical that that kind of innovation would arise from an anoyance like that:lol: so is this kind of modelling possible? is it even possible to mount a 20mm on the deck like the IXB can mount a 37mm in sh3?

yer i suppose it could just replace the VIIB/1 tower. i don't have any experience in modeling so unfortunately i can't do it:down: but i'll leave it to the miracle workers of subsim to decide whether to do it or not;)

If this was done I'd definitely download it.

yer that looks like the stage where it still had a small splash deflector. Note: it's just a small arch.
