View Full Version : Is there a weapons officer in SH4?
The manual says there is, and in gameplay settings picture in the manual it shows an option for weapons officer assistance but in game I dont see one, nor do I see all of the options listed as they are in the manual?
I cant do manual targetting, but I also dont the like the point and shoot of auto targetting...

There are a lot of unused options in the "Commands.cfg" file, such as:
[Cmd131]
Name=Toggle_TDC_autoupdate
Ctxt=1
Activating it might give you something similar to SH3's command for the weapons officer to solve the firing solution ... but I haven't tried it. I have activated the option for somebody (besides me) to ID the target. Other than that, the only help I get from my weapons officer is when I click on the "send to TDC" triangle for estimated target speed and heading.

I don't remember reading about this before, is this something undocumented? Could you expound on it a little? If I am reading you right, you automatically get a ship ID for targets you are tracking? When in the process does this happen? You are using manual targeting yes? Does this have the effect of lowering your realism level whether its reflected in the game or not?

There are two ways to activate ship ID (not counting TMO ... it has the option included):
via Commands.cfg
via OrdersBar.cfg
In the Commands.cfg, command 343 gives you the option to have your weapons officer ID the target. In its default configuration, the command looks like this:
[Cmd343]
Name=WP_Identify_target
Ctxt=1
MnID=0x3F130002
Str=1073
You'd need to assign an unused keyboard key to Cmd343 to get it to work (see command 311 for an example).
:hmm: Actually, right below that command is another command that might automatically give a firing solution.
I prefer to mod the OrdersBar.cfg ... and made the following change:
Button6Command=WP_Identify_target
Button6CommandToCheckIfIsEnabled=Is_AnyPeriscope_c amera_station_Active
Button6CommandToCheckIfIsEnabled=Is_UZOTBT_camera_ station_Active
Button6IconRowColumn=8,2
Button6Tooltip=ID TARGET
But that's just one of about 23 button changes I made.
If you've previously modified a game file that can be opened and saved with Notepad, then you'll know how to make the necessary changes. Otherwise ... I think there's a tutorial somewhere around here that can explain the process.
But the easiest way to add this and other really good options is to install either TMO or one of the other major mods to SH4. You'd probably be surprised how much they can improve game play.
