I've revived an old WIP of mine started back in june 08 : the playable Ko Hyoteki midget submarine.

I had left it aside for a long while while completing my Jyunsen B mod. I now think that the Ko Hyoteki might be a good addition provided someone out there start making historically accurate missions for it such as Pearl Harbord, Sidney Harbor and Okinawa.

all the extra stuff removed,
doors no longer visible thanks to Peabody,
only two tubes, but 4 reloads for the game's sake for now.
the periscopes stick out of the bottom a bit, but no solution for now.
It is stand alone (I added the version 3.4 of the torpedo mod on top of it)
Peabody fixed the upndwn scope problem and the Damage image from the BIG sub.

since it was such an old WIP I think I might start from scratch again...
I use for a base the Kaichu submarine (based on a typ II) and modify the outside, .sim etc...

I had too many CTD with the other ko hyoteki version, and I coudl'nt find what was wrong with it...
I thus removed it from FF as well..
it will work in campaign mode like the Kaichu does. If you want a small sub for now that's the one to use. The Kaichu's included in my Jyunsen B etc.. version 3.0 mod.
I would welcome a mission for the kaichu attacking a harbor like the Ko Hyoteki did, Pearl or any other, both subs are small enough to play that type of mission.

Here it goes ! playable with the 2 single missions from Peabody and 2 others from Kimuraijn that are included.

Just go to the .dat file and make them invisible, the Ko already had different kind built into it. You don't need those ones you added to even be visible.

seriously : the anim is still in the same place as before, so when you shoot, they appear ahead of the sub...
maybe we can make the scopes invisible too ? that wouldn't change the way they work would it ? there is already a short one on the tower's model.
but how do you do that ? I need it for the doors as well.. or I can remove the animation ?

I recently was at HA 18 in fredricksburg Tx and took a series of picks of her. Would you lik these in order to better spae your bow area to be correct? The model that came with SHIV is way off in many ways, especally in the bow.

Please do ! I noticed it as well looking at a few blueprints and such the figure 8 blades at the front actually had the shape of a normal bow when seen from the side for instance, etc...
Do two things : post a couple pictures here on the thread for all to see, and make a .rar for me with the high resolution picture that I can download from say Filefront.

Now all we need is a new node in the new senzori peabody made to host the Schnorkel for the type AM and the Jyunsen B and the other relevant files.

I worked a bit on the wire cutter to the front of the Ko Hyoteki : it has sort of an 8 shape from the front and a bow shape from the side .

With the price of Marlboros now, it's cheaper to build submarines. :lol: The good ole USA fined the tobacco companies for added extra nicotine to the cigarettes to get you addicted, and then sat back and watched them raise the price from $14 to $70 a carton to earn it back from the people that were addicted. Gotta love it.

I saw a special on that and they didn't convince me. There are several scientists that disagree with the conclusions arrived at by the research team. I saw the photos and listened to the discussion and saw the lighting etc and I, as well as many others, are not convinced that it was a minisub. I am not saying it wasn't just that I was not convinced by the evidence they presented, especially the photograph. They claim the screw broached the surface and made some 'rooster tails' but here is the other side of it. (only a portion of a big article which states it is possible but not proven)
2) The idea of the mini-submarine's screws broaching and creating the three sequential splashes is questionable for several reasons:
If the mini-submarine broached, it was more likely to be nose-up, not tail-up due to the lost weight of the torpedoes.
If the screws broke the surface, then why didn't the conning tower and especially the periscope also broach? As mentioned previously, it's somewhat more likely that the mini-submarine would have gone nose-up if it struck a pressure wave, which would push the conning tower and periscope out of the water first. Both are more likely to raise a larger and more significant splash.
If the mini-submarine pitched so far nose-down as to broach the screws without also broaching the conning tower and periscope, then a simple geometric exercise shows that it would have struck its nose into the shallow bottom.
If significant portions of the mini-submarine broached between the concussion waves, why then was there no sighting by the many eyes anxiously brought to that area of the harbor in anticipation of the next torpedo to strike?So, even though I agree it was possible, I am not convinced it happened.

It's about 7Km from the entrance to Battleship Row, and if you came from a location that you could actually be dropped off by another sub that would add another 20KM or so. So it would be about a 100KM round trip. Adding planes is not a problem but the game adds the wrecked battleships so the single mission would have to overwrite files that add them to the game.

Yes, Pearl Harbor is shallow, that is why the Japanese had to put the wooden fins on the torpedos so they wouldn't go deep when dropped from the planes, they would run into the bottom. That is part of the reason I question the minisub theory. I know they were busy with other things, but you would think that will the thousands of people there, someone would have seen the minisub, even submerged it should be easily spotted at periscope depth. But I have never heard stories of anyone claiming to have seen it.

I modified the railing in front of the two torpedo tubes according to photographic evidence I found.
It has a pointed shape from the side and an 8 shape from the front.

that model looks perfect, but for a two torpedo sub that didn't work all that well... well I think it's very expensive, especially compared to the game's price!
But yeah that model looks perfect.. it's the later version though : the one used in the Sidney harbor attack.
The number of downloads of that minisub (12 for the version 1.3, 25 for the earlier 1.2 version) doesn't press me to perfect it any more than it already is, I have other things to finish in the Jyunsen B mod.
I'm currently playing around with video and sounds, I might just replace the intro video with the second one I posted yesterday, the fourth attack on a merchantman by I-10 during her 5th patrol. :)

I have got bug: periscope is moving up and down. How to fix it?
Man I wish I had a 3 d model program.
I like the idea of having this sub in the game, problem I have is the multiple crew stations for a craft with only two crew, the multiple reloads for a craft with only two torps. These I think can be worked out by working with the game files (perhaps just a commander in the "control room" and engineer in the engine/motor room).
But the model is all incorrect. The actual sub had a more pointed nose, which had two points which were in fact the torpedo noses themselves. So when those torps were on their way the boat had two openings.
But as indicated this was a quite unsuccessful sub so continued work on it would not be worth much, but it could be fun.

I agree, mostly.If could work in a small campaign with them, say local action around the philippines, pearl harbor raid etc, cool if not, thats fine.You say the midget sub will be left for the single missions, so may I take that as a "yes there will be a playable midget sub" ??:yeah:
I don't know about the campaign although that would be cool to have a few missions, but we already made it !!!!!

I've got a solution to your Periscope problems. Take the Senzori_Uboot file(s) and make a copy, renaming it Senzori_Uboot_02. Using your preferred 3D modeling program start chopping the bottom off of one of the scopes that is already in game. Once you've got it to a length you like add a new node into your new Senzori_Uboot_02 file and import the model. This is what I have done with the 688i mod to keep all the Fleet Boats from having the 688's periscopes and such.

Not yet , I had Rubenandthejets check out the possibility as he lives in Japan, but to no avail.
WWII japanese was different, today's has softened a lot plus there are a lot of different words used.

At first we were going to have someone actually record a person speaking Japanese, but the person became unavailable. Then we had an offer from someone to take Japanese from movies. But, we asked for some examples, since different movies have different sounds and we wanted to hear how much background noise, music and different voices and levels would sound in the game. But he flat out refused to give any samples. So we politely refused.
I can do sounds from movies but there is a copyright issue and the fact that people that play it and do speak Japanese it would sound stupid. So, we set the idea aside until we could decide what to do. Then some real life issues stepped in for me and playtime went down the drain, so we never did get back to it.

I know its a WIP and liked it for most part, had some bugs though.You may be aware of them.
The periscope on the midget sub kept going up and down from begin of mission without orders and wouldnt stop.
May want to add the free cam from the start if possible, the fixed position is a bit annoying.
big bug, when I took a hit from an enemy gun, some weird black hull from a fleetboat showed up on outside of my boat(have an SS if needed).
Had fun getting depth charged, getting depth charged in a midget sub is brutal.So far so good, just some minor things.

WIP, and being put into FotRSU as an AI boat, and it will be in Climb Mount Niitaka mod in a couple of months - beta version, not a release. All of the boats in CMN will initially be "stock" compatible. The way to get it now is to use keltos01's IJN Ko Hyoteki Midget Submarine (21.40 MB) (http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/downloads.php?do=file&id=5146) on this site. You might have to do some editing of files and noodling in things. There is also a Jyunsen B mod that has the Jyunsen B, AM, Kaidai and Kaichu boats, at Jyunsen B mod (312.73 MB) (http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/downloads.php?do=file&id=4936), also on this site. Again though, editing of some files might be required.
