View Full Version : Ship Spotted

In my recent installation of GWX2.1+OLCE243+THOMSEN WATER+SHIPS+HSGUIV2 + other smaller, I get continually the report "SHIP SPOTTED" every one minute for the same ship, as long as that ship is visible, dropping the time always to 1x while in SH3commander I chose 8x. Never encountered something like that. Any ideas?

This generally occurs when you are at the extreme limit of the visual range.

Try leaving the bare minimum of crewmen up top, or dive for a few minutes then surface again. http://www.psionguild.org/forums/images/smilies/wolfsmilies/pirate.gif

Updated data:

When a friendly ship is detected time drops to 32x. When a hostile ship is detected time drops to 1x. The target is continually reported as a new target:damn::damn:.

Diving once seems to solved this but I can't live with that! It is certainly a bug, but I have all these enabled. So which with what?:damn::damn:

If I'm to be totally honest with you.....you've got so much non GWX content I wouldn't even know where to begin :o

You have both GWX Enhanced Damage AND OLCE2 Enhanced Damage enabled and you are only to use one of them....not both at same time.

Just one of your possible problems...

Generally, I used to be a WAC user so this is a combination of the last week. I didn't expect that this would work, but after some frustrating days I managed to resolve all the menu_1024_768 problems which were the most difficult and now I am ok! Except that damned thing!

If I don't manage to resolve it, I am willing to reinstall GWX and only the most important of the rest! Also, I don't claim that I am a hardcore README.txt reader :nope:!

Anyway if you can think of something ok, otherwise it doesn't matter!

I'm running the game with GWX+OLC+all my mods (obviously) and I don't have that problem, so my mods are clean!

Want a tip?

From your list, the mods I identify as the ones that modify sensors, are OLC's and consequently my water mod.
The tip is, enable all your mods and leave OLCE2 and my water mod for the two last mods to be enabled.
Then, enable OLCE2 first, and for last my water mod.

Test if the problem goes away.

I've annoyed with same problem almost for a year, and I think I finally find out a solution.:D

From my understanding, this "SHIP SPOTTED" bug is caused by Radar Warning Receiver(RWR) and one of the SHIII limitation.
not "on the verge of a visual range" stuff written in the GWX manual.

Kpt. Lehmann discribe in this post;

OTHER IMPORTANT SENSOR FACTORS AND NOTES!
The "Command sensor" in SH3:
In SH3 only ONE sensor is actively in use at any given
time... This is true whether it is your own U-boat and
crew... or an enemy vessel or aircraft. The available sensor
with the highest maximum range is typically the "command
sensor" and OVERRIDES other sensors that may be available at
the moment.

Because of this limitation, When U-boats equipped with RWR encounter ships/aircrafts which is emitting Radar signals, are keep receiving the signals and override its "contact" even within a visual range!

That's why the Watch officer innocently replies "No visual contact" just after the time when he shouted "SHIP SPOTTED" his own mouth.
But don't blame on him! he just feels Radar wave in his supernatural six sense!:o

and in this post;
http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/showthread.php?t=118604

also, what causes this to happen in mid game? like I said, I started a career at spt 1939, and the WO never started to act like an idot until summer of 1942.

I thouht he had equipped FuMB-1 Matox RWR on his boat available at Aug 1942.

So, I've tested Gibraltar single mission by several types of U-boats different type of year, and I've never encountered this bug non RWR boats, such as VIIB(1939).

Therefor, to avoid this bug is simple and easy.
1. Never equip RWR on your boat.
2. Turn off the RWR temporarily by displacing the radioman out of his station.
by doing this, the Watch officer and his men start using their "MarkI Eyeball" again. at least, it works for me.

Of course No.2 is easy and practical way, as you know. without RWR, you have a very few chanse to survive in this fierce battle.

and last thing remember, the word "SHIP SPOTTED" could be translated "Detecting Radar signals" in this manner, but more precisely, could be translated "YOU'RE BEING SPOTTED"
So, STAY ALERT! or you'll be dead man!

PS: this is my second post in this forum. thank you to GWX team and Subsim community, and please be patient my poor English.
Happy hunting and Happy Holiday!

I always test in 1939. My Watch Officer does it as well, and I've never had a radar warning device on board. I've also noticed that when you get closer he stops doing it, so I think Jim is right, as is the GWX manual. That said, I sure wish it would stop.

Also, I've noticed that the rest of my watch crew never says anything anymore.

It is certainly an environmental mod mix! I have this problem only with the above combination of mods, but I didn't have the time to check it through!

Hmm..there are some misunderstandings... sorry for my bad explanation and poor English.

In previous post, I would not say "SHIP SPOTTED" bug could not happen "on verge of visual range" or it could not happen in 1939 with non RWR equipped boats.

All I want to say is this bug could happen not only "on verge of visual range" but also conflict between Eye ball and Radar signals.

I just wonder the first one should be called a bug, because in RL, if you lost contact with your target and then find again, you would say "Ship spotted
agin, sir" or something. it's quite normal to me.

But, when the aircraft circling around and strafing on your boat in a clear sky and calm sea, the Watch officer still replies" No visual contact" doesn't make sense to me. it's should be called a BUG!

And It's OBVIOUS this bug could not caused by "on verge of visual range". in fact, if you click the "Nearest visual contact" icon again and again, the WO replies direction and distance intermittently. of course it's far WITHIN visual range. like 1000m or 1500m in a clear day.

if I remember correctly, I've encounterd this BUG(the watch crew lost their contact intermittently even in far within visual range) at first time in GWX 1.3 in late 1942.
Now I'm using GWX2.1 with OLC2 and some small mod, the BUG still persists. so as I described privious post, I bet that this could be stock SHIII bug.

but, yeah,it's only a hypothesis that the BUG caused by conflict Eye ball and Radar signals. maybe due to wrong mod order or corrupt file or somethig. I'm not sure.
anyway, displacing radioman from his station works fine for me so far.

geosub1978 - I notice you are using the 1.4b Assisted Plotting Mod. This gave me similar 'Ship spotted' grief, a while back.:damn: It might be worthwhile you checking your Contacts.cfg file. If the Decay Time For Precise Sensor Contacts has been set to 0, then change it back to the default GWX 2.1 setting of 60. Then test to see if this helps at all.

Good luck:up:

If so, your explanation is very good.
However, in WAC the 1.4b assisted plotting works fine.
Anyway, now I have uninstalled the previous strim waiting for GWX GOLD but I will keep this in mind because I always use this mod which is a MUST HAVE for real life lovers. It represents the interaction of the captain or watch officer with the sonar man in a very clever way!

@EASTGATE. I admire your concentration!Good points!
