I have a problem within SH3 where I have external sound, ie engines, weather, aircraft and within, some light background chat, but when a member of the crew speaks, shouts an alarm, or one crash dives (no alarm sound) I cant hear anything (just see their mouth moving).
I have a high end machine with Vista 32 bit, v1.4, GWX, Thomsens sound mod, ship mod, water mod and dials mod, olc ubermod 2.4.3.
Philip Thomsen has been very helpful in trying to help, but not wishing to keep annoying him, I wondered whether anyone else has heard of this issue, and even better how to sort it out?
There are clearly many sounds in the mod which I cant hear.
All mods are enabled via jsgme and I have the new looking console, excellent graphics etc.
Many thanks in anticipation!:damn:

I had that happen, and I use many of the same mods, I ended up re-installing from scratch.

The voices are .ogg format, while all the rest of the sounds are .wav.

Go to the sound folder and try to play manually one of those speech files to see if you can hear anything.

Like I said to you via PM, in the option menu, the language of the game is set to german?

I had a similar problem, try updating your drivers for your soundcard or inspect the settings of it and make sure you haven't ticked/unticked something you should have:hmm:just a thought;)

Thanks for all of your replies, I have a horrible feeling that I shall have to do a full re install, but will check the drivers and as Mr Thomsen suggests, will try playing directly from the file first.
Will report back asap!

You have a good mix of third party mods (something GWX have never recommended).

You obviously have a conflict or just as likely a faulty installation.

try a full reinstallation. http://www.psionguild.org/forums/images/smilies/wolfsmilies/pirate.gif

Thank you for your comments- I can hear the .wav files but cannot play back to .ogg files- my machine says it doesnt recognise this file type!

I had the same issue with WA 1.XX in late 2006. Never managed to resolve it with tweaking or drivers! It was only resolved after a defragmentation:down::down:.

Before you uninstall you could download the VLC media player and ogg codec then right click a ogg music file and click open properties and where it says "open with" put the VLC media player. Get th pc to play the ogg sound file and then try the game.
Dam worth a try.

It's not a codec problem.

Or at least shouldn't be.

The game uses ogg files, so obviously it has a codec for it.

As I said to you via PM, you may have corrupted all the ogg files while decompressing the mod. Can you play the original gwx's ogg files? What decompressor did you use?

Thank you once again- I much appreciate all of your comments, and love the game,, so am looking forward to getting it 100% again (it was until recently).
Always trying to improve it, hence my downfall I think!

I just wish I had the knowledge that you modders have- maybe one day.....!

Hi again

Please see my reply in the private folder- I am using w rar 371 to unzip and have placed all mods into the correct file system as required beneath the mods folder, then enabled them with jsgme.
Some seem to have worked, ie I have the new set up across the bottom for moving the sub and issuing orders etc.
I cant play any files that end in .ogg, even those that came with GWX it would seem.
Thank you

This problem is usually caused by setting the "Character animations", "Sound effects" and/or "Particle rendering" Time Compression events to 1. If you've changed these event settings, either through SH3Cmdr or through direct editing of your data copy of main.cfg, then change them back to the default settings to restore all sound.

Even if you don't think/can't remember if you've changed the settings, check the file anyway (and to reiterate, it's the copy under "My Documents\SH3", not the copy in the main "SilentHunterIII\Cfg" folder).

Thank you guys- yes I did change some of the settings for compression (not sound as not available here), via SH3 Commander from the stock settings, one was compression from the game's max of 1024 to 4096 to help over those tedious long journeys, so id this maybe an issue?
I intend to reset them all and try again now!

I also changed the number of days spent in base down to 3- I and skip intro movies, assume this wont affect sound?

I am very pleased to report to all of those very helpful people who commented on this thread, that it now works fine with the sound- not sure if it was the downloading of the software to enable to .ogg files to be played (dont know why they played before the installation of sound 3.0!), or whether it was the changing of the settings under SH3 Commander for increased compression.
Can I ask the following?
1/ I have one problem though that seems a major one, and that is that I can not see the circle on the main map screen to see where I am! A big problem indeed when moving under high compression and generally without a sextant!
2/ Further to the above issue with sound, why does SH3 commander allow changes, ie higher compression times, if they then cause problems?

Please keep up the good work guys- I am sure that I speak for many who appreciate the fantastic efforts that you have, and are putting in, to improve this game without getting paid for it. I CERTAINLY APPRECIATE IT AND GET IMMENSE PLEASURE FROM IT.
