View Full Version : Odd things happening - GWX
There's been some odd things happening in my game lately.
GWX with Commander and Thompsons sound pack.
First of all the performance is suddenly down across the board, but that I can live with that, sorta... see below.
Lately though when Im approaching a convoy the game really slows to a crawl and it sometimes wont let go above 32x compression (even though there isnt any ships within sight yet).
Then while nearing the convoys, on 3 different occasions, I've got a notification of another sub (a circle on the nav map), sometimes two... either to the side or behind the convoy and its always when the game really lags badly.
Then when I get within visual range of the convoy a large portion of the ships are on fire, sometimes even the escorts are flaming away. Ive seen this before with really rough weather (but not with this many ships damaged), but in all these cases the weather was fairly calm and besides Ive never seen 6+ ships burning away at once.
Ive also not been getting credit for ships sunk, even though I saw them go down. Nothing on the map or in my log.
Then last night the weirdest thing happened. I was inside a convoy, I had already fire a torp at a light cruiser and a ship behind me. I was watching the ship behind me get hit by my torp when another ship (that was between me and the other one behind me) suddenly exploded even though I never fired at it. I then fired another torp at large ship in front of me which also blew up. 4 ships going down with 3 torps, one ship I never even fired at? I got no credit for any of them, even though 3 of them showed up on the nav map none of them showed up in the log?
I know its not possible to have other AI subs attacking convoys... so how are these things happening?
Ive also been getting CTD's lately if Im looking at the black sea / eastern area on the NAV map.

this is a wolfpack. and yes AI sub attacks are possible (just not using torpedoes)
the subs you are spotting are Type VII U-boats which are firing deck guns at the other ships within the convoy.
this is cool to watch!
the only problems are...
1. The gunfight is usually over by the time you make the scene
2. Every boat with guns is firing back and forth with the subs which slows the computer way down (depending on your computer)
3. the U-Boats are pretty much always on the receiving end of the ass kicking rather than the giving end.
4. Approaching the convoy can be troublesome because they are in "Alert mode"
5. the escorts and merchants will be on fire because they took hits from the AI U-boats. this is normal. but if you dont realize you just walked ubto the aftermath of a huge bar room brawl its difficult to make sense of the black eyes and bloody noses.
about sinkings - i can only guess that the "mysteriously exploding merchant" intercepted one of your torpedoes which was meant for the other ship.
im at a loss on your CTD issues and your nav map problems.
perhaps someone else can answer
I had no idea wolfpacks were in GWX... So thats whats going on, it explains alot about the lag and burnign ships, guess I missed that in the manual. (too bad they cant do torp attacks...)
The ship that suddenly exploded wasnt from me. I only fired one stern torp and it had already hit the intended target, very odd.
The CTD's have only happened twice so big deal... (other then the long reload times...)
Still Im preplexed by the recent no credit for sinking problems, and that mystery exploding ship.

You may not be getting credit because they are still being damaged by AI gunfire after your torpedo has hit them, or you have moved out of rendering range (approx 30km).
The only surefire way of knowing you've got the credit for the kill is when you receive the message 'She's going down'.
The CTD's your experiencing in the Black Sea area of the map is something nobody has been able to fathom out yet.

Additionally, viewing the eastern portions of the nav map have produced occasional CTD's LONG before TGW/GWX was created.
It happens to me when I try to view Siberia on occasion. (Was trying to reproduce CTD's via testing.)

Well thats the thing, I was well within rendering range and I got the "she's going down" on two of them yet none showed up in my log. (which is usually fairly accurate compared to the nav maps sunken ships icons) I didnt notice any AI gunfire either.
Ive decided not to look at the eastern part of the map anymore...
I'll try it agian, Ive got save game from when I first got the convoy report (Im well over 50km away from it or land) that I'll reload, though I imagine things will turn out totally differently.

did this take place after the aforementioned wolfpack attack?
perhaps the ships that sank went down as a result of damage sustained earlier in the fight and not as a result of damage you inflicted?
From my experience the CTD in the Mediterranean (when i was there with W@W) or the Black Sea were always with Time Compression!
And scrolling the map too fast!:hmm:
With a little caution I managed to avoid that in my career before I was ordered into the Atlantic again!:know:

Agreed, time compression and map scrolling are often a common factor....but as you correctly state, there is a workarond for them.

Yes it did, however that particular ship (the one I didnt fire at) had no visiable damage, it wasnt on fire... she just blew up on her own. I was in an XB, I had already hit one ship behind me and there was still one more eel in the rear torp room (I checked it myself ;) )
Perhaps a crewman was negligent with his ciggarette
The CTD's did happen when I was zoomed out and using TC yes.
Now this next part is ironic, considering I didnt know there was other AI german subs & wolfpacks cruising around, let alone ever seen any. I started a new game last night in a VII. (I prefer the VII's over the IX's...) Anyway I cruising west of the Bay of Biscay my watchman calls down, sub spotted at 50 degree's sir... Sure enough there was a VII off my starboard, so I cruised up beside him to say hello... it was Thompson, Thompsonnnnn!...
I just thought it was pretty funny, considering the above posts, Ive never seen another AI sub in 3+ months of playing and it happens just after all this confusion on my part.
Very cool!

Yes Ive seen italian and british subs before but never a german one out at sea, Ive seen them when leaving ports of coarse.
But running into one out at sea that far from port was a first. Maybe tonight I'll seem one engaging a merhcant. ;)
Sorry, should have clarified that part...
