View Full Version : [WIP] A new great battleship!
With Gerome's permission, i'm working on his Roma battleship, for this new unit:
http://img519.imageshack.us/img519/5817/rowtn1.jpg
RM Duilio
http://www.regiamarina.net/arsenals/ships_it/battleships/drawings/duilio_class.jpg
This unit is thinked for give an alternative to italian Littorio\Roma class for Med Campaign. In facts, all no-Littorio class of italian battleships had 4 main gun turrets, like Duilio. Only Littorio class had 3 gun towers.
Give your impressions, please ^_^

Looks like another beauty in the making there VonDos.
Seems like it is time to ask Prevateer to help with some new italian main Turrets. By the way with some minor changes this project could be extended to another Italian BB Julio Chesare finalizing Italian battle line.

http://img519.imageshack.us/img519/5817/rowtn1.jpg
This is a problem; what can i use for main towers?
320 binate and 320 trinate aren't included in SH3\GWX, i think.
Duilio had 2 320binate and 2 320trinate
For now i've those options:
11inch triple, 14 double, 15 double, 16triple, 18triple
My idea is use 15double and 16triple, but they're too big; btw 14double and 16 triple are too different one from other...
help!

I think no present guns will fit. You should ask Privateer for assistance.
Yes, you will be authorized to import her.

Great Work VonDos! Glad to see you're still turning these high quality ships out, and en masse too.:D I agree that both the Cavour and Doria class BBs are so similar, once you have completed one, the other shouldn't be too hard to kitbash - two birds with one stone so to speak.:hmm:
Also, do you have plans to work on a UK carrier or a French cruiser anytime soon?:hmm:

http://img238.imageshack.us/img238/3851/rowzm4.jpg Wow! I hoped soooo much for these ships to be modeled in SH3. Thanks.
At a first glance, I would suggest four small adjustments:
1. The forecastle on the Duilio's and Cesare's is shorter than on the Littorio's: it should end just aft of the 90mm guns and not at the C turret;
2. As far as I remember, there were no visible anti-torpedo bulges ("controcarene" in Italian) on the Duilio's and the Cesare's; I will check this one out, anyway [EDIT: I checked that: in fact the Duilio's relied only on internal anti-torpedo protection (the so called "Cilindri Pugliese"); no external bulges];
3. The ships were somewhat lower on the water (IMO also the SH3 rendering of the Roma is a bit too high on the water);
4. The grey the Regia Marina used before the war (i. e. before camouflage of the ships) is lighter and a little bit more blue-ish (San Giorgio looks much better to me).
As for the turrets, the twin mount looks quite good to me; the triple turret instead is decidedly too big and "square". I wonder if the best solution wouldn't be to modify the twin turret in order to fit in a third barrel.
 "Keep up the good job, kaleun!"

One more note: the platforms of the turrets should be smaller, in order not to be wider than the turrets themselves.

1 Correct ^_^
I never thought i was able to do this ^_^ BTW this generate some little strange shadows on the hull near the modded zone.
2 Yu're right; those "controcarene" was a Roma's details; btw correct!
3 I'll check right level on the sea, if possible
4 Correct, easy!
Those guns in the images aren't the definitive; i'm waiting; Privateer is working on italian guns (see images up)
Btw, this is the new corrected version; i've added also searchlight; now i need to place a\a guns and ohers

Von Dos,
When you're ready for beta testing, let me know. I finished scripting the first battle of Sirte this weekend (minus the addition of your two new BBs). Once I have your betas, I'll drop them into the mission and test it live.
The way the battle is scripted, they should get a chance to fire and maybe take a few hits.
While testing A\A i've modified overstructures between fore funnel and command tower (not a\a present in those images).

Looking at this photo I finally understood where the problem of "being too high on the water" was: in fact the hull is too short, so all the superstructures look somewhat too high or too bulky. In fact, measuring from the aerial view, L/l ratio (Length to width) is 6.06:1; on the real thing it was 6.67:1 (original measures: 186,9:28,0). That means the hull is approximately 10% too short.
Apart from that, the ship looks really good -- and your last modifications are very well tuned.
Thumbs UP

Hi VonDos,
I really like your models, but I have to admit there is one disturbing thing I find on your ships.
You seem to have some strange geometry/shadowing on some parts of your ships. For example on this Italian battleship you can see some strange highlights alongside the edge where the top deck meets the side of the ship (right above the last row of windows). A similar affect (dark areas) is visible on the red/white stripe part of the ship (view from the top). It gives a false impression that those sections of the ship have a round edge when in fact those edges are sharp. Do you know what I mean?
I am a 3D modeller myself, I use 3D Max Studio. I recognize such visible error when incorrect Smoothing Groups are applied to a model. But I don't know if this is the case for SH3 modelling as well. Maybe some other guys like Privateer, Ref or Iambecomelife could give their feedback because I don't see this error on their ships. I would really love to see this error fixed on your models. :know:
Sorry, English is not my native language, so I hope I made myself clear and not too offensive. This is intended as a constructive criticism. :|\\
Yeap, HMS Belfast based on Fiji class would be great and I think not to much difficoult to do. Same time Ajax class based on Dido model could be another great addition.

I do know the answer.
Some parts need to be detached.
If you have a box?
All sides need to be detached for the SH3 Engine.
Every part we create needs to follow this rule.
Or you get strange smoothing and graphic weirdness.

Here's an area that needs to be detached yet.
http://i108.photobucket.com/albums/n12/privateer_2006/F5x.jpg
And if your sharp?
You can spot a few other areas that should be detached also.
;)
The Game itself tries to smooth things.
By detaching faces we stop this and get sharp edges.
