I'm Using SH3 commander with the crush depth randomization option...........

Question(s)?

Does the crush depth get randomized at the beginning of each patrol?

OR:

Does it get randomized every time you load the game?

OR:

Does it only randomize the crush depth initially for your new boat?

So far as I know, the randomizing of the crush depth occurs every time you start SH3 with Commander.

The User's Guide and Readme do not seem to state exactly when or how often your crush depth is changed. :-?

Jaesen would, of course, be able to give you a definitive answer. :yep:

Can we get an official ruling from the judge on this one?

That would be silly!

 You are correct, crush depth randomisation occurs every time in an attempt to reflect, as you well put it in another thread, "many real world factors influencing maximum depth such as variances in the steel's quality [JJ: and effects of metal fatigue/subsequent repair over time], salinity and temperature of the water, and even atmospheric pressure".

So recovering from a 253m dive in one patrol does not mean that, all other things being equal, you can expect to recover from a 253m dive in the next patrol (or game session if you've saved mid-patrol). And nor should you expect such constant behaviour. That would be silly! ;)

As always, my heartfelt thanks for sharing your knowledge and wisdom with such gentility, Jaesen. :D

Even though SH3Commander has been a part of my SH3 experience for years, I am still amazed at the care and detail to attention you put into crafting all of its features.

Your two utilities, SH3Commander and JSGME are a must-have for any kaleun and I refuse to play SH3 without them!

You would do well to listen to this man, gAiNiAc. Few others know as much about the overall mechanics of SH3 as Mr. Jones. :know:

Hehe, yes, don't let the simple interface fool you - there is a lot going on behind the scenes in those 7,000+ lines of code, LOL.

ARGHH!!!!!! :arrgh!:

On a more serious not.....

I don't know if this could be implemented, but........

Wouldn't it be more realistic to randomize a crush depth "window" unique to the boat that is set once initially to reflect overall build quality of the particular vessel, and then randomize within that set of parameters?

With the modern engineering and manufacturing techniques of the day, all the u-boats in a given class were more or less equal in their crush depth.

A difference of 10-20 meters between each boat was only partly because of quality in materials and workmanship. It was mostly due to environmental factors, quality of subsequent maintenance between patrols, in-patrol repairs, and combat conditions.

A u-boat gets beat up by the stresses of diving, sailing in storms, the shock of depth charges, and the general wear of operations...as well as many other factors. This "fatigues" the u-boat and may or may not affect your ability to dive beyond standard crush depth, depending on evironmental conditions.

SH3 Commander represents this quite well with a 10% variance in the maximum depth standardized for each u-boat type.

You might wish to program your own utility to set and vary crush depth of the u-boat in order to have the features to your liking.

If what you say is certainly the case then I'm quite happy with it as is.
