View Full Version : Where to find older versions of GWX???
It's groveling time!
I have a older pc with the following specs-
Intel Pent 4 cpu 1.80 GHZ
512 RAM
Nvidia GeForce 4 TI4600
I remember being told that my machine might be able to run a older version of GWX. I have tried in vain to find any links to a older version than the most recent update.
I appeal to the 'Lords of SH3' in their infinite patience and wisdom!
PLEASE HELP!

KaptZ, that video card will be the trouble. It's not even up to minimum specs for running plain, vanilla, out-of-the-box SH3!
Minimum recommended video card specs for stock SH3 is either an ATI Radeon 9700 or nVidia FX 5200, with at least 128 MB of memory on the video card.
Although the CPU and RAM are fine, your vid card will not allow you to run GWX.
Hi!
GWX requires a system that can run stock Silent Hunter III, and the team specifically excluded a lot of higher-resolution graphics so that minimum-configuration systems that could run Silent Hunter III could also run GWX.
I think your video card is likely the issue, as the TI4600 is compatible with DirectX V8.1 and the game requires compatibility with DirectX V9.0c (see here (http://www.pcworld.com/article/86947/nvidia_geforce4_power_to_spare.html)).
Minimum Configuration: Win 2000/XP Only
DirectX 9.0c
1.5 GHz Pentium 4, AMD Athlon, or equivalent
512 MB RAM
64MB DirectX 9.0c compatible graphics card with Pixel Shader 1.1 capability
DirectX 9.0 compatible sound device
DVD-ROM 8x or faster
2.8 GB hard drive space
Windows-compatible mouse required

I was afraid of that. Actually it does seem to manage SH3 with a few minor mods without any trouble, but I knew GWX is a whole different animal.
Thanks for saving me the trouble of downloading it anyway. I'll just enjoy what I can as is.

Someone once tried an experiment to see if GWX would run on a computer system very similar to the setup you have, Kapt Z, and the video card was a Ti4600.
They even posted some interesting screen shots...
The game did run but it had many rendering failures, such as the ocean being a featureless, purple void and white ghosts where some ships would be because textures were completely missing.
Partly this has to do with the older Pixel Shader version your card was made to support not being able to handle the extra pipelines called in the renderer. The other is how vertexes and particles are implemented in DirectX 9 being incompatible with video cards made when DirectX 8 was still state of the art.
If you really do want to use a super-mod for the convenience of having bug-fixes, workarounds, and new features rolled into a single package, then you can try even older mods, such as the original Grey Wolves Super-Mod (GWX was built on this) and others.
NYGM 3.1 is also an alternative. It lacks the eye-candy some of the other mods have but instead has more emphasis on realistic tactics and operations. This means the game can be more difficult as I've read in many places that NYGM is intended for the more hard-core simulation players that prefer realism over high-res ship skins and harbor traffic.
Whatever you decide, I hope you have lots of fun!
You could try Real U-Boat 1.45. It's an older mod & might work for you. You can find it here: http://www.subsim.com/subsim_files/patches2005_sh3.html. Scroll down the page & you'll find it.
