I have a prog for unpacking texture files, but am in need of one to repack them...anyone know of such an animal?
Perhaps like chess set except for textures?

This site here... http://www.mnwright.btinternet.co.uk/graphix.htm

Martin Wright's site is intended for CFS modders but his page for graphics tools has a great many useful utilities for textures. :|\\

Hope this helps! :D

You know Graf that's kinda funny you referred me to MW. He and I used to colaborate way back in the day of CFS...
He is kinda responsible for getting me starting in modding. I do have his TGA tools which is the coverter from tex file into bmp or tga although I need something to covert them back into a tex file. I did leave him an email and hopefully he will respond...
any more ideas would be appreciated...

I'll do some digging. You'd be amazed how large my bookmarks file has gotten over the last 10 years.

I just wish that there had been somebody around to mentor me into modding like MW did with you.

Some people just need to be pointed in the right direction to find a direction to get started.

Ah, well. At least I can help in small ways around here. ;)

[EDIT]

Did you take a look at ImageMagick? It's the swiss-army knife of graphics conversion and whatnot. Site link... http://www.imagemagick.org (http://www.imagemagick.org/)

Are you just trying to pack a texture into a .dat file? If so, I thought S3D allows you to import textures into the model .dat.

[EDIT]
I forget...this is for packing .tga files, right? I know I stumbled across some DDS stuff, but wasn't sure if that's what you needed.

[EDIT...again]

For .tga files I found this in my bookmarks.... http://www.mslaf.com/projects/textureutilities/index.html

Don't know if this is what you meant.

[EDIT...redux]

Since Targa files are just 24/32-bit RGBA files, why not use the nVidia DXT tools and plugin for Photoshop or the standalone DXT texture ( dxtex.exe ) tool that came with the DirectX SDK?

And don't forget ATI's standalone texture compression tool called, The Compressonator, of course!... http://ati.amd.com/developer/compressonator.html

Hello Mate,

I have small .TGA Texture pack/unpack program which I find on net (I use it for making IGM Mod) But I don't remember name of site from where I download it. If you went I can upload it to my page on Filefront, and you can download it.

Ahoy and welcome to moding world.:arrgh!:

I'm sure that once 'dawg is finished with his beauty sleep, he'll appreciate any help you can give, Wolf.

I have a few items to upload to my FF page for him also but first I'm off to the kitchen to make a pot of homemade Texas chilli! *drool*

These yankees up here in Washington have no idea what is truly good Tex-Mex food. I see it as my mission to educate these heathens with some home-cooking!

See y'all in a while later! ;)

@ Graf...I appreciate your concern for my beauty sleep although I could sleep for weeks and never become any better looking...
and as far as Texas chili goes...Im the master...NO friggin beans go into the making of good Texas chili...just top sirloin...beans are for those who wanna fart...
Thank you both for all your help...:arrgh!: ARRRR maaties

Ps Ahoy and welcome to moding world

Ahem...I have been doing this kinda shizznit since 96...and I know this screeny has nothing to do with subs but this is what im doing now...see the silos in the background...Im trying to make them white for a fertilizer plant...it's a RL based route from a train yard in Denison, TX running into Oklahoma...

Amen, KD! REAL chilli has no beans, just several pounds of MEAT! :arrgh!:

Beans are a yankee invention anyways, except for brown beans. Those are best served up with a ham hock and some buttermilk cornbread!

Is that MS Train Sim I see in your screenie?

Some of the DXT texture utilities ought to work perfectly for that.

I'll do some more digging later, got to grind my comino and dried anchos!

Ditto on the C&D here as well.

Only commies use Bisquik to make the dumplings! :stare:

I also make my biscuits and gravy from scratch and my pancakes too! Got to have buttermilk to make really good biscuits and pancakes. :D

...and real butter, too! I don't want my arteries clogged with hydrogenated anything! If cholesterol was good enough for my pappy and dad then it's good enough for me, too.

I'd rather die happy. You don't see these health nuts living any longer than the rest of us.

That said, I must apologize for the lack of attention with the texture tool you're seeking but the wife had other plans for my time after supper.

I'll get back to you tomorrow with some more links and/or files. Us non-vampires need our sleep as the night wears on. :p

Yeah, but he needs a texture pack/unpack tool for Trainz 2006, Anvart.

@Koondawg:

This is for packing several bitmaps into a single Direct X texture, correct?

The DXT tools from nVidia, ATI, or the DirectX SDK will do the job but I think I've got some other things archived in my disc collection that you might like better.

Have to run some errands for Mrs. Paper and complete a couple of "honey-do" projects. I'll get the files uploaded after supper tonight.

Koondawg
10-19-08, 04:49 PM
Correct Graf...I have chess set for the .dat file If Wolf would come back hopefully he will upload the prog for me to FF.

@ Anvart its a texture file I need to open/edit/then repack. Which would allow me correct area silos...

Ok, here's a link to a .zip file with your name on it that I just uploaded to my FF page and contains several utilities of which at least some may be of use to you, I hope.

Texture Utilities (http://files.filefront.com/Koondawgzip/;12106715;/fileinfo.html)

As I find more, I'll let you know. I hope this helps you, dawg. ;)

Mate,

As I promised here is a download link of utility which I use for IGM pack/unpack .TGA files from .dat files in SH3.

http://files.filefront.com/DatTexExtractrar/;12107736;/fileinfo.html

and now I went to give few instructions for wor with it.

1. you CAN'T change NAME of .TGA texture which you modified because utility pack back into .dat only same named files.

2. your moded .TGA textures MUST have SAME COLOR DEPTH as original texture I suggest you to use photo editing program like Photoshop who have option to change color depth of pictures.

Good Hunting.:arrgh!:

For SH3 SH3Unpacker by TT is better then chess ...

P.S.
This program is more tolerant to image chunk in dat-files ...

@ Graf...
Thanks for the DL although I couldn't make heads or tails from the progs you sent...I didn't have any luck with them unpacking the file....still in the same boat...looks like im gonna have to jump into gmax and create a silo

@Wolf...
The DL you added in mate is chess set...which I have and works great for unpacking a .dat file not a texture file...thanks for your help...you may want to see Anvarts post above

Well, hang on to them because I'm sure you'll find them useful eventually. They're not too hard to figure out. Some of them do have help files or a documentation folder.

The folder labeled "DXT_Tools" is the nVidia DDS plugin for Photoshop/Paint Shop Pro ( dds.8bi ). The plugin allows you to edit/create various DXT compressed textures from within the graphics app. There's a screenshot of the interface (dds.jpg). The exe files are command line utilities (I know...I prefer using a GUI for this sort of stuff, too.).

Lithunwrap can edit UV grids directly on your 3D model and converts UV-mapped textures back into a normal texture file that can then be edited in your favorite graphics app.

UVmapper does what the name implies...create UV Maps from textures for your 3D model. The Classic version is freeware but the Pro version is included as a demo.

The Compressonator is pretty much self-explanatory...open up a graphics file with it, decide if you want to keep or delete the alpha channel, and then pick your poison for which compression method you wish to use.

The other utilities and apps I haven't used more than once or twice and I don't recall any specific features.

That all being said... I apologize for not asking earlier but what exactly are you trying to get done and with what type of files are you working with? (bmp, png, tga, etc..)

Looking good so far. Sorry I couldn't be of more help to you, KD.

Will this mod be compatible with GWX 3.0 or is it strictly part of your "I've Been Reiching On The Railroad" mod to simulate more realistic trains for SH3? :p

What are you 'packing' the image files into?
SH3 files?

Or a Train Sim?

:hmm:

Koondawg

Train sim...and when exporting what I made you'll get the .im file along with the mesh and tex files.

Thanks again all

Very good work, KD!

I ended up freezing half of the chilli I made. Six bowls in two days is my limit for right now...at least for my colon. :p

And not those pansy bowls you get with those dinnerware sets...I mean a REAL bowl.
Also useful for those who are serious about eating ice-cream, cereal, and pudding.
