Hey.
You know that PING sound that is heard when asking the navigator for current depth.
Can destroyers hear that sound?
Im am always very nervous to ask for depth when ever there is enemies around and Im undetected.
Is that sound realistic did they use a sonar device to determine depth under keel or is it just a game thing this ping.

Hmmm :hmm: It was posted recently that in game they can't hear it so I've been useing it without a problem.

in the GWX manual i thought it said that they could so you should take care when using it :hmm:

EDIT: maybe they cant - i cant seem to find it in the manual... perhaps i have been mis-informed or just unlucky in the use of the depth report.

I coulda sworn I read somewhere that they can't hear it...

Easy way to find out...put on the visual noise meter thingamagig, sneak up to one....and ping.

I've always been under the impression that they can, and only used it during depth charge explosions. :)

Yes they can, just tried it last patrol, was something like 2,5 km from DD, I did the ping and he came right for me in full speed.

So yeah, using it near enemy isn't that much of an recommendion, maybe in a storm yes

Looked thru GWX manual and nothing about ping.

Also did search without any luck.

Maybe a GWX dev can help us out.

One things for sure. The DD and DE have " excellent " hearing equiptment. :yep: :damn:

I remember one of the GWX team members saying that DDs can't hear the ping.

edit: They can hear your sonar ping.

..They can't hear your ping when checking depth, like they can't hear gramaphone playing full volume :nope: They are totaly deaf on this

As earlier posted, maybe a GWX dev can settle this.

I checked this dozens times in navy academy and in single missions, was pinging like hell but there were none actions from DD's. So carefull with your statements next time ok ?

BTW this issue was already discussed here: http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/showthread.php?t=138079&highlight=sonar

Yes they did.

The Echelot Gear

The shallow water gear is of the super-sonic type, using a magneto-striction transmitter of frequency 1,500 cycles per second and a similar receiver unit, mounted horizontally, 28 in. apart, in a flange welded near the bottom of the hull. Transmission is by the condenser discharge method. The deep water gear consists of three "Wall" type sonic transmitters connected in parallel and three moving coil receivers connected in series, mounted in the keel, 32 ft. 6 in. apart.

An alternator giving 1,500 cycles per second, provides the power for the transmitters at the working frequency of 3,000 cycles per second.

The same depth indicator, namely a rotating neon tube, is used for both deep and shallow sets, the ranges being 0-125 metres shallow and 0-1,000 or 0-3,000 metres deep.

Provision is also made for hand transmissions and aural reception, using a stop watch for determining the depth.

ok we are talking about two different pings here.

i think

ping one: the echolot depth reporting ping machine device thingy

ping two: the range to target ping thingy with the button at the hydrophone station.

am i to understand they CANT hear "ping one" but CAN hear "ping two"?

I assumed the depth-sounder because that's what he asked for.

In real life they could hear any sound you transmitted. In the game? There seems to be some controversy, as witnessed by the posts here. I prefer to play as if it was all real, so I never use it when a destroyer is anywhere to be seen.

steve - your right... but the thread went on to talk about pinging a target. :hmm:

just tried it in a single mission.

Pingged the ocean floor half a dozen times - no response from the 4 nearby destroyers.

Pinged a destroyer with the ping button at the hydrophone station (if your sub is so equipped) and their response was almost immediate.

so through my trial and error there

they CANT hear the echolot

but they CAN hear the S-Gerat

I forget where I saw this discussed, but no, the AI cannot hear you checking your depth. This may cause some confusion as I'm pretty sure in SH4 they can.

Also GR's test pretty much confirms it.
