I am going to be updating the last few slots for oil tankers in my mod, and I was wondering what types of tanker people preferred to see. So don't be shy - let me know what you want to see in your crosshairs! Comments are welcome.

Smaller tankers
Sh3 has more than enough large tonnage ships
Smaller ones are lacking

I vote for small and medium, but need all tonnage.

Agree.

One or two larger types but a large selection of smaller vessels would be good.

In the books that I am reading at the moment, Hitles U-boat War I-II, C, Blair, the average size of the tankers seems to be around 10,000 tonnes.(N Atlantic).

About 10k for tankers.

If you'd asked about cargo, I'd have voted 1-3k

Of course I want the smaller ones.

SS The Countess - 870 tons!

Couldn't copy this one, but she's 1507 tons.

Yes lots of low tonnage tankers about in war
Lot low tonnage cargo too

Everyone release mid to big tonnage
rarely a small ship released of any sort

My vote for medium-small, medium and huge ones...;)

My vote would be for 30k tankers, but since it's not an option, I vote for the huge ones.

I think that TANKERS SHOULD BE HUGE! After all, they're tankers!

Anyway, I don't waste my eels on ships with less then 8k tonnes, so I wouldn't vote for small ships.

PT, you'd be amazed at how many ships I've found in the 1000-tons range that kaleuns actually torpedoed. It seems that in real life a lot of the time they couldn't tell the difference.

I want something super large... Since your asking hehehe.

Big and bad. Loaded and ready for a spread of torpedos to do her in.

I love greatest tankers because i love great boom, great fire and great
smoke:rotfl:
Serious - i prefer great tankers. Tankers are rare in SH3 so when i finally
meet the tanker during patrol then i want him big as possible.

P.S. Did i tell that i love great tankers?;)

Seriously, I prefer medium to large size.
But problem is amount of RAM on your graphic card if you want realistic BOOOM!

Small, medium-small. More coastal traffic is needed.

Small coastal tankers would be nice. :)

I like it when my tonnage sunk has more than 5 numbers  Guess which one got my vote... :88)

Though I agree with Coronas and Mr Chris : what is needed the most is coastal traffic. :hmm:

Those Great Lakes ships have already been done. 1700 tons or thereabouts.

Could maybe be done better, though.

@ Sailor Steve = Yeah mate, I know. If I was there, in WW2, as a kaleun, I would fire my fishes at any elco torpedo boat I'd find in my way, so I could run out of torpedos and had to go home, enjoy a 20-day vacation, out of the danger. But since it's a game, and since we don't waste eels on ships with less then 5k, why bother making small ships?

@ Vondos = Hey mate, what do you think of making one of those gigantic tankers, like that 700k in the picture, for sh3, just for fun? I bet a LOT of people would download just to see it sailing and to see it sinking! I know I would! If you don't have plans of doing something like that, you lemme know, cos I will give it a try!

Actually, taking a look to uboat.net we will find out that 90% tankers sank were of 8000-11000tns. 8% was bigger e.g. AMERIKALAND/TERJE VIKEN
and 2% smaller. So in SH3 I think we are "on the right way"!

If the question was about merchants, I would definitely choose 4000-4500tns!

Well...

I wanted to see a big tanker in the game... So I opened NLTMs with S3D, exported as a .obj, loaded with wings3D, scaled to 300%, exported back to the .obj file, imported back to the dat file via S3D, setted up a single mission and...

... and CTD!

Something went wrong, I dunno how to make ships yet.

Problem is, I didn't make a copy of the dat file cos I didn't thought the game would CTD, and now I can't play SH3 cos I don't have the original dat file of the NLTMs.

Can someone upload a copy of it for me? :D

I voted for small-medium simply for the fact that we do need more of the smaller shipping for added feeling of a living world. Sure, the heavies hauled the loads for the trans-Atlantic trip, but the smaller ships were used to then disseminate all that cargo to the numerous ports in and around Europe, Africa, and Asia.

It would certainly make the game more interesting to have so much more shipping in the North Sea, Channel, Bay of Biscay, and other places where those huge Atlantic transports are rare.

Those places have little enough to sink as it is and all those Type II and Type XXIII kaleuns would certainly love the increase in traffic. As it is, you have to go harbor raiding or skulk just off the English coast to grab some good tonnage in the North Sea.

Of course, tossing in one really huge cargo and an enormous tanker would be a good, juicy target for the VII and IX kaleuns. :hmm:

Good point. Thanks for your comment, and thanks to everyone else.

AG124 created an excellent small tanker styled after the ones in "Aces of the Deep" a couple years ago - IIRC it was one of the first modded ships. I might make a couple similar ones, but with different styling.
