View Full Version : A few big thanks and an idea

Salut à tous,
It was a very long time since I came here. Back then, I was playing SHIII with RUB, as my poor computer was unfortunately too weak to run GWX. I spent a lot of time enjoying the game, then let it aside for a couple of months (yes, shame on me !). Coming back to it one day, my dear SHIII was resentful enough to offer me nothing else than CTDs : abandoning my precious careers on a very successful (and renown-improved) "Typ IX" did nothing to it, and removing all JSME-enabled mods did not have any more healing effects. So, I finally gave up totally.
I recently bought a new computer (with Vista :-? !), so I took the chance to give SHIII another try, especially with GWX 2.1 over a brand new install of the game : all runs perfectly so far ! That's why I would say here that nothing (really) would have been possible without the help of this forum, which - with a little time to look for them - gave me all the necessary answers (I needed many !) and solutions. So, many thanks to those in this forum who give their time to solve problems and explain things.
My second thought goes to the GWX team. No big sentences needed : a massive, impressive work that gives SHIII another dimension ; the team will never be thanked enough for such a masterpiece.
I will end with a thank to the modders. I mean the authors of "little" (in size) mods, which are - more than very often - the cherry on the cake : to name only a few, U-boot's exhaust smoke, life-boats + debris (and rowers), water streams (need a better graphic card to run this one, at my great dissapointment), no instant death screen, and so on. The authors will recognise themselves, may they all be thanked too.
And that's where I will (finally !) expose my idea : all the mods I use were added either because I used them previously with SHII + RUB, or (and that's the most important) because I found them with a stroke of luck, looking at a player's "config" in one thread or another. Of course, I took a look at the huge sticky post regrouping all the mods, skins and improvements available ; but coming back here after a year or so, a look at this very post (I even guess that two are now needed !) made me feel dizzy.
So, what do you think about a "hit parade" of the most used, the "must have" of JSME easilly-enablabe mods for GWX 2.1 (and NYGM) ? A big thread (a kind of poll) would allow each member to let know his favorites. Then, let's say the "top 20" would be put into a new "Mods' Hit Parade" sticky post.
Silly idea ? :88)
Best regards to all, and thanks once again. Bis bald, wieder to this damn (too well garded !) big convoy. ;)

If I may jump in here and add my two cents as well. I can't agree more with everything you said. I have played this game since it came out, added all the mods along the way, only to step away for a while, too addictive, and a little boredom, but I always will reload every 6 months and man how things change.
Prior to this game, and many in between, I played Jane's WWII Fighters. Still one of the best WWII Flight sims around, hard to find but can be bought in the sales bin some times for like $5.
Anyway, they too had a large and talented online community, and after getting the okay, they got the code and started creating so many mods, the result was like this with SHIII, virtually a new game.
After all the strings with all the best mods were voted on, and of course all were free to download, the members actually got the idea, to create a mod cd for the members, we all pitched in I think like a couple bucks, and out it went, a 2 disk cd rom with all the latest and greatest. One or two guys took the responsibility, and burned copies, then fired them off in the mail to the forum members who had chipped in.
It was a great success, and we started to even see them being offerred on ebay, one actually was starting to be marketed on Amazon falsely as an addon to the game.
Anyway, just a thought and a possible way to go.Salut à tous,

That's the very least I could do. Been playing the game again for a few days now, and felt a bit ashamed each time I was on board my U-boot, and in particular each time I encountered a new pleasant (or deadly !) feature. All that nice stuff grabbed without a kind word to anybody...
I hope I will be forgiven anyway for not having named all the ones I intended to thank : they're too numerous. Without them, no install possible under Vista, no way to run the game after install (Starforce was necessary for me and I never heard about it before), no GWX, no JSME, no skins, no mods, no SHII Commander ; in a word : nuts.
Chris
PS : I previously played SH I and SHII too (big fun linked with another computer playing Destroyer command !). A bit lonely then in those boats though ! lol
PPS : my votes for the "Hit Parade" in question would be (above GWX 2.1 and its minor fix of course) :
- "Water streams and exhaust smoke" (even if I can't run it by now).
- "Racerboy exhaust smoke" (as I can't run the previous one properly, I need to be happy with this one only ; too bad as the water streams are absolutely fantastic to the eye).
- "Longer repair times".
- "Lifeboats & debris" + "Rowers for Lifeboats & debris".
- "Thomsen's no instant death screen".
- "Torpedo damage final" cosmetic mod (if I can call it this way).
- Fubar's skins.
I would be happy to hear more from you all about your own favs.

If you have problems with Vista try this link.

This is a good guide to help you take control over your computer.
RB's exhaust mod works for GWX 2.1

http://files.filefront.com/OLC+Ubermod+243+for+GWX+21/;11901121;/fileinfo.html Thanks for the heads-up, Privateer : I just listed the content of my JSME folder, forgetting that I was waiting for the latest release of this mod (on which I already drooled much to date).
Wolfehunter, we have the same Master ; too bad I don't have enough midichlorians to also be one of his Padawans...
And thanks for the link, Vista already took much of my time (and a bit of my life expectancy too I'm afraid).

Welcome back, mate!
It's kinda funny you mention a mod that I made so long ago. I was expecting so see some of my mods in your list, but not that old one... ... Almost forgot about it.
Anyhow, I recommend you give a look at the sound pack V3.0, and it's updates 3.1 and 3.2, you can find in my signature. It's my best mod, my cherry, my precious. 400mb of new and improved sounds! :D
Also, I'm working with the environment now, you mind checking some screenshots in here?

You're really gonna need OLC's Ubermod. It's a must!

Danke Kamerad. And well, time has no effect on such cool things. ;)
BTW, I checked : last time I posted here was around december... 2006 !
So of course, I bet that things changed a bit in the meantime.
And that's precisely where my "problem" stands, thus my idea of a "Hit Parade of Mods" : several I used then are now fully integrated in GWX 2.1, others were updated, or reworked, renamed, are now not compatible, etc... Or forgotten, even if they still do not deserve such a fate. So, I'm a bit lost and I bet that I may not be alone in this case, as I think that "new comers" are surely more numerous than one may think. So please readers, keep them coming, I will later regroup them in a single thread, with links for an easy access.
I will of course try your prrrrrecioussss sound pack mod soon, Herr Thomsen. But I need at first to get used to the sounds of GWX, in order to "see" the difference later. I'm just discovering GWX and surprises come one after the other. To give only two examples (the eye-candy, new boats and so on apart), I was recently out of Lorient for a patrol in northern Atlantic ; I was of course looking mainly for planes... when shells began to whistle at my ears ! It was a brit sub firing at me, and from quite far away ! I managed to dive at periscope depth and to get closer at full speed, then to send him - despite his zigzags - a torpedo just into the nose (I must say I was a bit lucky on that one). Man, that was a piece of a surprise !
Later, I managed to track and find a big convoy. When first ship was spotted, I then came a bit closer, and - as usual - started to get into an ahead position at flank speed, hands in pockets, smoking quietly while having a funny chat with men in the conning tower (it was around 7 am, quite clear weather, nice conditions for a pleasant chat before an attack). Then, I saw a big splash of water appear in front of the boat ; I had no time to ask what the hell Bernard was doing when another appeared even closer at the rear. Damn, had no idea the escort would have spotted me from THAT far away !!!! :dead:
Aaah GWX, its sensors and its 16 km atmosphere ! Now not sure I will beat Otto Kretschmer's score within two patrols any more... :shifty:
Chris
PS : just noticed that someone else already had the same idea, so I let herr Squeak go on with his thread here :

My very first agenda was to thank all the modders, skinners and helping members here, and I hope my goal was achieved.

And also deserved : you work, we play ! :yep:
But I can understand your views ; I maybe spend more time on modding my game, making improvements thanks to them, testing, etc...than on playing my Kaleun's career. (lol)
Here's the list of what is "JSGMEd" on my GWX 2.1 game so far :
http://img239.imageshack.us/img239/1471/modset8.jpg
I hope they're more or less enabled in the right order. Again, I will say that I'm sorry not being able to use the "water streams V4 mod" you can see in the left column, as it's an absolute must. Despite my efforts, my Asus EAH 3650 (512 MB DDR3) is unable to run it without jolts to my U-Boot...

Looks like a nice selection of mods.
One very minor point - your JSGME is an older version. If you click on the blue Updates in the centre it will update to the latest version which adds the useful utility of greying out any mods that have been overwritten.
JScones has put full details at: http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/showthread.php?t=141773&highlight=jsgme

Thanks for the info. This was the JSGME installed by GWX 2.1, I had no idea it could not be up to date. But it's also true that here, very few authors keep "their hands in the pockets" for more than a couple of... hours !
