During an attack on a convoy I fired two torpedoes at an Empire-type freighter. Didn't need two really as the first torp caused enough damage, but when the second torp hit the ship split in two. The bow section sunk in seconds, but the stern section remained afloat (see pics). I did consider the deck gun to finish it off but thought I might hit the survivors, being the considerate Kaleun I am. With no torps left I headed back to Wilhelmshaven.

Very odd! Maybe they were storing corks and ping-pong balls in that half of the ship?:D

Cool. In my searching I've found more than one instance of a ship breaking in half, one half sinking, and the other being towed to a harbor, or sinking under tow a day later, or a whole ship being towed breaking in half a day later, or a...

I'm glad to see this kind of variety.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/USS_New_Orleans_(CA-32) (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/USS_New_Orleans_%28CA-32)

"When flagship Minneapolis (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/USS_Minneapolis_%28CA-36%29) was struck by two torpedoes, New Orleans, next astern, was forced to sheer away to avoid collision, and ran into the track of a torpedo, detonating the ship's forward munition magazines and gasoline tanks which severed 150ft of her bow just forward of turret #2. The severed bow, including turret #1, swung around the port side and punched several holes in the length of New Orleans' hull before sinking at the stern and damaging the port inboard propeller. A fourth of her length gone, slowed to 2 knots (4 km/h), and blazing forward, the ship fought for survival. Individual acts of heroism and self-sacrifice along with skillful seamanship kept her afloat, and under her own power she entered Tulagi (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tulagi) Harbor near daybreak 1 December (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/December_1)."

You'd never think it possible looking at the photos (on the wiki page).

Erich, your link needs to be fixed. You accidentally cut off the second parenthesis, which makes it a dead link.

But you're right - it's an amazing story. There are many like that. One ship is carrying steel and sinks in 30 seconds with all hands. Another merchant eats eight torpedoes over a ten-hour period before finally going down, and a third takes one torpedo, which is a dud, and because some plates were ruptured actually floods and sinks later.

You never know what's going to happen, and it's good when the game reflects that.

similiar strange thing:
I have raided Dover, one of sunken ships was Troop Transport (broken apart after 2 torpedo hits). On the return way - few miles from Dover - I have seen smoke, object was identified as floating part (half of TT) of Troop Transport. Dont know how could it get there (from harbour closed with subnet)...

Don't forget to install the lifeboats mod first, then the rowers mod

are there any screenshots with rowers, pls ?

The construction of a ship's compartments has an effect with many vessels constructed in 'sections'. If enough sections remain intact, the vessel could remain afloat when a section is sheared off or "holed". I too like the variety of the sim and that it does seem to produce variety of damage modeling.

Here a vessel was 'holed' but remained afloat:

An oil tanker that split in two 65 nautical miles south-west of Penmarc’h. A response team from the tug was lifted by helicopter to the site. The Abeille Flandre thus succeeded in securing the tanker and keeping the stern afloat, which still contained 11,000 tonnes of heavy fuel oil, in extreme weather conditions, thereby preventing the Erika from running aground on Belle-Ile and possibly causing another massive oil spill

Jim,

The SS Ohio & Operation Pedestal to Malta... it's become one of my favorite WW2 naval history stories.

We've actually scripted a mission in GWX2.1 to represent the above event.

Some information for HS ADRIAS which had a similar faith:

Adrias was a Hunt III (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hunt_class_destroyer). On January 27, 1943, while positioned 360 nautical miles NW off Cape Finisterre (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cape_Finisterre) Adrias was believed to have sunk the German U/Boat U-553 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Unterseeboot_553) (British Admiralty's signal presumed her possibly sunk). When the war ended the loss of the German submarine was officially confirmed to have occurred on January 27 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/January_27). However, the name of the ship that caused the sinking was not mentioned. During that same operation on February 13, 1943, Adrias sunk or seriously damaged the U/Boat U-623 (http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Unterseeboot_623&action=edit&redlink=1) (the last report from that submarine was dated February 9, 1943).
Adrias took part in numerous convoy escorts in the Mediterranean Sea as well as in the Sicily landing operations (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Allied_invasion_of_Sicily), where on the night of July 20 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/July_20), 1943, in cooperation with British destroyer HMS Quantock (http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=HMS_Quantock_(L58)&action=edit&redlink=1) she successfully confronted 3 German torpedo boats during a night engagement and sunk two of them. On September 20 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/September_20), 1943, representing Greece, she participated in the force of 4 Allied ships to which the Taranto (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Taranto)-based Italian Fleet (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Regia_Marina), sailing towards Malta, surrendered.

Adrias after being struck by a German mine on October 22 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/October_22), 1943

On October 22, 1943, during operations (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dodecanese_Campaign) in the Dodecanese Islands (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dodecanese_Islands) and while near the island of Kalymnos (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kalymnos) with the British destroyer HMS Hurworth (http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=HMS_Hurworth_(L28)&action=edit&redlink=1), Adrias struck a mine. From the explosion, her bow was torn off. The English Flotilla Commander onboard Hurworth ordered Cmdr. Toumbas to abandon ship. Hurworth, while trying to come to Adrias's rescue, also hit a mine and sunk taking 143 men with her. In spite of the damage suffered, Adrias took on the survivors of Hurworth (among them her CO) and managed to reach the nearby coast of Gümüşlük (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/G%C3%BCm%C3%BC%C5%9Fl%C3%BCk) in neutral Turkey with 21 men of her crew dead and 30 wounded. After some minor repairs, the ship sailed on December 1 for Alexandria (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alexandria), despite her missing bow. After a trip of 730 nautical miles (1,350 km), of which 300 were within the range of Luftwaffe's Junkers Ju 88 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Junkers_Ju_88) bombers based in occupied Greece, (the threat of them forced her to sail only at night despite her limited maneuverability), she managed to reach Alexandria on December 6 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/December_6) (day of the Feast of St. Nicholas (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/St._Nicholas), patron saint of seamen) where she was enthusiastically greeted by the British Fleet and other Allied ships. This achievement was considered a brilliant example of seamanship, and provided a morale boost to the Royal Hellenic Navy and other allied ships in the Mediterranean Sea.
