View Full Version : For a REAL difference between obs and attack scope?

Dear all commanders,
I am using the GWX 2.1 super mod + mods.
I like other mods as OLC (nice work) mod BUT I don't use it because for me it's not realistic mod about the scopes:
- Get all the TDC tools on the same screen make me feel I am in a modern sub whereas the stock SHIII (or GWX2.1 modded) that still propose a separated TDC screen.
I think this initial way is more immersive because I can imagine I am looking thru the scope then I face off to input the data in the TDC then I am looking again thru the scope and so on...
However I would like to improve the scopes on this way :
- attack scope : ok the stock one is nice, the firing buttons should be realistic to transmit orders from the coning tower... The sight thru this scope has to be tiny because high zoom , no problem...
- obs scope : This is the point. I am waiting about this one a huge view! Maybe all the screen on my computer has to display the sight I have thru this scope. I think the firing buttons must be removed because :
1 - the scope is in the command room
2- the scope is just beside the weapon officer's TDC (means if you want to attack with the obs scope, just switch from obs screen to TDC screen)
3 - Hell!!! this is the obs scope, no firing button! :dead:
Of course, the solutions tools has to been keep on the obs scope screen.
To resume :
- huge displaying + solution tools, that's it! :up:
Is this mod existing?
If no, infortunately I don't know how to create mod + no time. BUT I will be glad to help working on such a project if somebody is interesting by!

are you sure the obs scope is in the command room?
it would have to be HUGE in order to break the surface then.....thats why the attack scope is in the Command Tower as well ;)
btw: realistic Periscope mod moves the OBS scope into the COmmand Tower;)
Type VII had the observation scope in the command room, Type IX had it in the conning tower thanks to the larger space available.

The thing is, the captain looked through the scope and made his calculations passing them to navigator (Plot) and TDC operator, who did the input in the calculator.
Having the TDC on the scope screen allows you to look through the scope and make those inputs instead of telling them to an inexistant in-game TDC operator. If we had a very refined voice command that allowed speaking to a microphone in order to set up the TDC's firing solution, that would be perfect, but since we don't.....:hmm:

Well Hitman,
You open the gate on a very interesting sexy idea :
- By pushing on a mark button with sight locked on a target , we should hear the commander's voice saying the bearing and the distance of the target (distance that we have to estimate as usually and input in the notepad)
- By doing this procedure several times and by respecting the 3 minutes rule. The weapon or navigator officer's voice should reply the target's speed and AOB that we could input in the notepad.
- Regarding the experience of the weapon or navigator officer, the datas they give us back contain some offset (for example, +/- 3% on AOB and +/- 10% on target's speed)
- A new qualification (as gunner or medic...) should improve the accuracy of theses datas...
- ......... :hmm:

The idea is good, but unfortunately out of SH3 modding possiblities. Hardcoded stuff I'm afraid :hmm:
However SH4 has a similar feature, yet without voice.

Well, I understand you mean the complete sequence of the idea is impossible (the back returning datas from officers).
However I think it is no problem to attach the commander's voice when marking range / speed / or AOB from scope notepad.
for example :
- "Target speed is XX"
or
- "Note AOB is XX"
or
- "Target's range is XX"
Of course by German language!
By this way we can reproduce better what's happen when clicking on notepad button.

Yes, but doing it together with other modifications you will not like.
Some time ago, I was also looking for something that suited my taste and since I couldn't find it, I bit the bullet and learned how to modify the images. Finally I released my optics mod some weeks ago, and I'm very happy with it :up:

right, i also play long time on SHIII (since released actually) and I have some ideas.
Hope I could share them by making some mods!
In few words, image or sound mods are done by manual program with special syntax or using editor or.......? Somebody could tell me?

I think you need hire a weapon office and when you play the game, you speak command to him.
You ask a good question, what is the realstic? In fact to got the target parameters it's not just as easy as in Das Boot, just captain say it. He or the weapon office need do some calculate (and not only one way). But in game, you play both roles.
That's why I want one button to mark the target in map based on TDC solution. That's why I feel difficult while playing Dangerous Water trying to do TMA
and take care sonar at same time. Because I am only one person. I can not do so many jobs at same time quickly and without make mistake.

Right, I was playing subcommand and feel the same but you also can choose to control or not each station...
If I can get free time (now I repair a moto :D ), I hope I can mod as following :
1) attack scope : as vanilla SHIII
2) obs : huge and no firing button
3) (mark on map but don't know if possible or if I am able...)
4) TDC station + marking not available if no officer at this station
5) Voices (I am very sensitive about sounds environnments) that say the bearing + range when using notepad marking
6) + your ideas!!!!
