What is critical to making this mod work is RAM. I have 2 megs and that is the minimum. I only have the british ships loaded and it workd fine. Any more and I get the kernal.dll loading crash. The ships are just awesome.
I look forward when I get my new rig to having at least 6 megs. Thank you for all of your work on this mod.

I didn't know that. Thanks. I have always done my 3d model creation on machines with a minimum of 2GB, so I never experienced this type of CTD. I'll make sure to add this to the system requirements when the mod is released.

I have 2gigs but i still suspect that together with my graphics card are the source of my CTDs.
Im going to build a new system with 6-8 gigs and a good card, i will be back after that.:salute:

Is it possible to transfer some of your ships to SH4 ? Hmm....i think there will be problems with the damage model and reflections...:hmmm:

Ok, im back with my new PC, Intel Core i7 860 2.8GHz (Turbo Boost @ 3.46GHz) Quad Core, 8GB 1333MHz DDR3 (4 x 2GB), Asus ATI Radeon HD 5870 1GB = Happy Times.:woot:

But when it comes to MFM only thing that has changed is that my CTDs just got faster.:D

This is actually improvement as it isnt as frustrating as before..

So, anyone have any ideas what im doing wrong??:06:

Progress update:

-Researched the possibility of using the stock armed trawler as a basis for small merchant ships & tankers. So far, the results are promising.

-Corrected an error with the rigging of one of the large American freighters (designation L03A, large composite superstructure modern merchant).

-Designed a Norwegian skin for the soon-to-be released large modern whale factory ship (designation W01B).

thx for your tremendous work!
the ships you built look way better than the stock ones.

people like you will be responsible for me buying a new rig to be able to load all your great mods.

thx, sir! :salute:

At this point all I can do is reiterate not to install when you already have a career & make this the first mod you install after a supermod like GWX.

It should go like this:

Clean 1.4B --->GWX/whatever ---->Merchant Fleet Mod Beta.

Not sure if that's the source of your problems, but if not, try this sequence out.

Fortunately the current version I'm working on produced no crashes on a clean installation (and has several new ships the beta doesn't). I am hoping your problems will be resolved upon release.
********

Today I am reinstalling GWX to get some unique files I need for the next version. After asking permission from the former GWX devs they will hopefully be used to enhance neutral shipping ingame.

My latest attempts according to your instructions.

1. attempt.
Loaded to the museum. :woot: But almost instantly the mouse cursor froze in the screen before i could scroll the ships. I had to end via task manager.

2,3, and 4 attempt.
Loaded to the museum, was able to scroll the ships for a time, then CTD. Always in different part of the list. All ships missing the bottom of their hull, Large merchant missing the whole hull.

5 and 6 attempt.
Museum doesnt load anymore, CTD just in the end of loading.

Anyone have ideas?

PS. The ships are beautiful!:salute:

There's no reason why you should be getting these types of bugs - I suspect that your graphics drivers are to blame. I had similar bugs when my NVIDIA 7900 was dying (although it is odd that you are having these problems on a new machine). Unfortunately, at this point it seems to be something to do with your PC, and not the mod. Nevertheless, try out the next release version to see if it solves your issues.

What OS are you using? Are you using any non-standardized drivers? I also have a 5870 (which I am very happy with) and I am using drivers found on the ATI website with no major difficulties.

Also, did you make sure to delete any leftover files in the registry, My Documents, Ubisoft root folder, etc?

I recently updated to Win7 ultimate 64 and 4GB RAM. Till now I have enabled 4 of NYGM units, 2 of auxiliaries mode and 12 of the MFM and the NGM unit of community mode. All these in WAC!!!.
I say there is absolutely no problem. Only if I quickly scroll the museum then I have a CTD. If I scroll normally no problem. These ships are just perfect!!! In some ships of MFM the bow spray appears forward of the bow. I don't know if this is intented or not.. Yes, the whale factory is needed!!Please releaze it independed! A unit that I love is the P01B of NYGM.

Thank you Iambecome! Excellent effort and result!!!

Let me know the numerical designations of these ships with the bow wake problem, please.

There's been some dramatic progress in recent days - I am now churning out skins for the two types of neutral shipping. This will have a dramatic impact on players' choices and how they play the game.

Basically there will be two types of neutrals: legitimate neutrals and contraband neutrals. Neither type will fly flags (this was actually done on some vessels during wartime) but they WILL have neutrality markings painted on the hull. You will have to pay attention to details like vessel course, behavior, and deck cargo to see if these ships are truly innocent or if they are carrying war materiel. Due to shortages of merchant shipping, Britain often chartered neutral merchants to carry British cargoes - for some owners, the high freight rates were just too much to resist.

You will not be penalized for sinking "true" neutrals, but their renown value will be set to 0. This gives the player an incentive to be careful in targeting without triggering the AI problems of neutral units from all other countries attacking.

The nationality for contraband neutrals will be set to British and other belligerent nations.

The benefits of this approach are as follows:

-Neutrals will appear in convoy and in British waters without modifying the GWX/NYGM campaign layers.

-You will be able to see a more diverse array of shipping than was the case in either stock SH3 or even the supermods.

-It encourages the same type of logical decisionmaking real commanders needed to use when conducting attacks.

-Multiple nationalities can be represented using the same ship model - no huge download files of cloned ships.

The only real drawback is that these ships will not have flags on their masts - however, the neutrality paint schemes will make it obvious what countries they are supposed to represent (see pictures below).

Nations you can expect to see include:

Norway
Sweden
Denmark
Panama
Argentina
Brazil
Ireland
Greece
Holland
Belgium
Spain
Portugal

The United States will not be included because it already has its own cloned ships.

Concerning IABL ships available with NYGM.

Two users above have stated that they are using some of these ships with GWX and WAC.

Could I draw again to everyone's attention that these ships have been rezoned to fit NYGM's slow-sinking model.

Specifically, the ship .zon files contain numbered entries to zones which are found in NYGM's zones.cfg file, but which do not exist in the zones.cfg files of GWX and WAC. What happens next, when the SH3 program code tries to interpret this error, is hard to guess - but the ship cannot be stable.

And you cannot just replace your zones.cfg with that from NYGM, because GWX and WAC have their own special ships and their zones.cfg entries overlap with those from NYGM. To take just one concrete example, one of the commonest zones used by basic SH3 ships would now point in NYGM's zones.cfg file to a quick-sinking zone. So when these standard ships try to appear, they will sink quickly!

The reason for this complicated behaviour with zones.cfg in NYGM is an attempt to provide individual, tailored, slow-sinking behaviours to different ships, instead of taking the one-size-fits-all method adopted by other modders.

Stiebler.

Thanks for the hints. However, I personally have never had CTD's while using the mod in either stock SH3 or the latest version of GWX. I think that if the game encounters a zone that is not in the game's zones.cfg file it simply ignores it. Hardly ideal, but not a game breaker either.

Also, some of the newer ships were created using stock Silent Hunter 3 vessels, and not ships modified by GWX/NYGM.

I think most crashes are caused by:

1) Installing the mod while on patrol
2) Installing during an existing career
3) Inadequate RAM and/or graphics cards
4) Placing text entries in enlishnames.cfg in the wrong place

If you are running GWX and you place the entries amongst the inactive units (separated by a semicolon) it might cause problems. At least in my experience this seemed to correspond to CTD's.

I know the risk about using these ships, however I have encountered all of my installed ships and haven't noticed any problem yet. :DL

I have also noticed that the AKs of the Auxiliary Mod ships need too much punishment to go down. 3 hits-time 32x for 30minutes - not sinking - 4th hit - time 32x for 30 minutes- not sinking- gunfire for 20 shots and finally sunk!
I don't remember the running depth, but some where under keel and some max 2meters above keel.

@Iambecome, I will inform you tomorrow or on Saturday about the ships with the "strange" bow wave. Give a good chance to the whale factory!!:yeah:

For me its a RAM issue. I had 2Gigs in WinXP and were not enough. Now 4Gigs in Win7-64bit and everything fine with the ships that I mentioned.

Ah I see, Thanks.

I've done a completely fresh re-install with minimal other mods enabled and....I still cannot get it to work.

I can see all of the MFM ships in the museum (it loads fine) but when I load a new career....CTD everytime

Anyone have an idea what I can try?

@HellRaiser

I haven't been following this thread but I went through a period of CTDs when installing object heavy mods. I solved it by increasing the RAM from 2GB to 4GB and installing Windows 7 64bit.

You may have already answered this but how much ram do you have ?

Running Windows XP with 4GB of RAM installed...I know it doesn't really recognize above about 2.5GB.

I did have it working for almost a year and them made some changes, added mods etc. and corrupted my install.

I just can't figure out how to get it working again.

I scanned my HD and found nothing but the batch file for changing the skins. You will have to ask JB or SS for sure.

In my opinion those skins were inferior to the stock skins in a lot of ways. I actually ended up blending the default SH3 skins at high contrast with photographs of ship hull plates to design my most recent merchant textures.

The deck cargo is an integral part of the ship models. However, it can be damaged or destroyed, explode, or fall overboard, just like standard deck cargo.

Hi Iambecomelife,

I have looked at the tonnage values of some ships (MFM, GWX, stock SH3,...) and it seems in some cases the displacement value is given, in some the DWT value, in others the BRT/GRT value... Since I think the best thing would be GRT/BRT values, I tried to find out the values for some ships. Here are my results:

C2: around 7000 BRT
C3: around 7800 BRT
T2: around 10500 BRT
Liberty/Victory: around 7200 BRT

I could not find any values for the T1/Patapsco Class tanker and the T3 tanker. Do you know these values? Do you know how much the BRT value of two ships with similar dimensions can differ? And finally, can one roughly scale the BRT value with the length? Any comment would be great.

I wish you the best for your exams!

Cheers, LGN1

Sailor Steve
04-20-10, 12:37 PM
You're asking for what the standard values should be?

In real life there were several subvariants of each type, and GRT could vary by several thousand tons. Also individual ships were rated differently by the insurance companies and varied from the 'norm'. So, for a general "what they should be" rating:

C2: 6100
Actual insurance registry numbers range from 5990 to 7101 (so far).

C3: 7800
Actual numbers range from 6736 to 8008.

T1: 1840
These were gasoline tankers and mostly operated in the Pacific. I don't have any insurance numbers, so no actual GRTs.

T2: 10,448
Actual numbers range from 8298 to 10,198

T3: 9880
Actual numbers range from 10,180 to 12,197

LGN1
04-20-10, 01:07 PM
Hi Sailor Steve,

thanks a lot for the reply and the numbers. The T3 looks strange, it is so much larger than the T2 in the game :hmmm:

Anyway, do you have more numbers for the other ships?

Cheers, LGN1

Sailor Steve
04-20-10, 01:46 PM
Like which ships? I have lots of individual ship tonnages. Unfortunately the game is designed to randomize around a set tonnage, so unless it's a military class there is no official 'class' or 'type' tonnage. With civilian types the GRT is determined individually by the ship owner and the insurance company, and pretty much every ship is different, hence the need for randomization in the game.

My preference would be a system in which I could make the game or Commander give not only the name but the tonnage that goes with it. It can be done, but the game won't apply it to your score - it would just be a number for you to look at.

For each ship class I can give you the numbers that go with the names already in Commander's files, or just an average for the ships I've applied to each class. The problem there is that a lot of names I have don't have photographs, so I can't verify that they really belong where I've placed them. So I do what I can.

The T3 looks strange, it is so much larger than the T2 in the game :hmmm:
In the game it's listed as 11,335 tons, which I've seen elsewhere and is pretty near the average for the class; and I only have the actual tonnages for a few of them so far. Also, One sub-type is listed as 11,355 tons, which is funny because the sub-type is "Custom Built", which were a bunch of ships for oil companies and recruited into the navy, and their tonnages vary wildly and they date from brand-new to all the way back to 1920, so they aren't really T-types at all, don't look alike and don't really have any kind of "standard".

Sailor Steve's already done a good job of answering these questions. However, a few things:

Ships listed as "sisters" generally varied in GRT from a few dozen tons to several hundred tons. For example, the standard cargo-carrying variants of the Liberty Ship tended to be from 7100 - 7300 tons, if I'm not mistaken.

As for length, some rules of thumb are:

300-325 foot ship = 3,000-3,500 tons
400 foot = 5,000 tons
425 foot = 5,500 tons
500 foot = 10,500-12,000 tons

So the increase in length/tonnage is not exactly linear. There were exceptions - occasionally merchantmen would be of normal length but of shallower-than-usual draft to service a remote/badly dredged port, for example.

:yep:

Again it was all up to the insurance companies. There were set numbers with whole groups of ships having the same tonnage, but it wasn't random and a lot of numbers were skipped.

US Liberties: 7176, 7177, 7179, 7180, 7181, 7191, 7194, 7196, 7198, 7200, 7201, 7207, 7208, 7210, 7212, 7216, 7225, 7240, 7244, 7245, 7247

The Liberty tankers were all 7218 or 7243 except for the US navy ones, which are all 3665. I assume that is the light load displacement.

UK Liberties:
7210, 7219, 7253, 7255

Far and away the vast majority of these were all 7219.

Belgian Liberties:

That's all there were.

Dutch Liberty:
One ship, 7176

Greek Liberties:
Two of them, both 7176

Norse Liberties:

Well, in between studying I discovered that the multiple-nationality ships idea hasn't worked. They seem to be causing crashes. Instead I will probably end up adding cloned merchants for each country.

I discovered a bug with the equipment loadout in the CAM-Tanker (T14B) that caused CTD's in Museum - this has been corrected and I can email the fix (or give instructions) to anyone who is interested. Because not many people are using the beta and because the next version's pretty far along I will not be re-releasing the entire MFM beta with this & other little fixes. Instead, the fixes will be in the final release.

Iambecomelife, your inbox apparently is full, since it will not accept new private messages. I tried to send you one related to the T14B fix. I suspect that the response to your offer has been more than you anticipated. Cheers EmeAzul

Hi iambecomelife,

could you please post some information about the fix? I think quite a few people use the beta, so it would be great if one could correct it! Thanks for all your efforts and the ships!

Best, LGN1

Very sorry, but exam time rages on. :rotfl2:

Just turned in my second one (Prison Law); three to go!

Anyway, I don't think I will be releasing that fix because the CAM-Tanker turned out not to be the culprit. Something else is also causing CTD's, but I have narrowed it down to the merchants M34-M40. In between studying I will keep checking things out and get back to you.

CAM-Tanker fix (be warned, this may not stop all CTD's)

Another small update: I finished exams and I am now testing changes to the Merchant Fleet Mod under GWX. So far, no crashes in Museum, so this could be the release version. :sunny:

Iambecomelife,

In your full MFM mod, do you have ships similar to these:

Warszawa: http://www.uboat.net/allies/merchants/ships/1227.html

City of Calcutta: http://www.photoship.co.uk/JAlbum%20Ships/Old%20Ships%20Ci/slides/City%20of%20Calcutta-01.html

Clan Ferguson: http://www.photoship.co.uk/JAlbum%20Ships/Old%20Ships%20Ci/slides/Clan%20Ferguson-04.html

Not exactly, although there is one raked bow modern merchant that looks a little bit like "City of Calcutta". However, it has a shorter superstructure with the traditional "three island" configuration, whereas "City of Calcutta" appears to have a long, low superstructure and an aft well deck. The funnel is also shorter and broader.

I have the majority of the 'City' class ships in NKGN. They aren't exact, but they are similar and are exactly the right size.

Also your Clan Ferguson is a post-war ship. The wartime ship built in 1938, is this one.

Guess where I have her and her sisters grouped.

I'm conducting some last minute testing - I want to add small craft and neutral cargo ships. The file will be uploaded later this evening.

OK - get it here:

The skin pack exceeds Filefront's size limit, so I will break it up & re-compress.
