Hello Lads,

Just trying to remember the old SCX Crew...

Ramius
Xabbarus
Thomasew

Oh my, there was a Swiss lad who made the most fantastic 3D models as well...old age and head contact with steel bulkheads has taken it's toll...help me out here lads.

Ahoy there Mac, ... and all you other lads. :D

The chap I think you are referring to, ... methinks ... is/was .. 'MBot', .. who did the Victor Subs.

Don't forget 'Deep Six', .. who did the bulk of the models for SCX.

.. also, ... 'Te Kaha', .. one of the ealiest members of SCX, .. who did lots of repaints, .. especially for Aircraft etc.

Other than these lads, ... no others come to mind. Of course, .. there were a couple of lads, .. who 'claimed' to be part of the SCX team, .. but, never made a single contribution ... and they shall remain nameless .. :-?

Nice to chat to ya Mac ... best wishes to you and yours.

And, .. of course, .. best wishes to all the old crew ... :D

Cheers for noo ... :)

Bloody hell, another blast from the past.

Hi Tom, hope this are all well down there in sunny SA

Yep, it was Mbot who done the Victors. There was also whoever done the "comsa" site. for the life of me i cant remember his name :damn: i knew all these years in a steel tube would have side effects

Hi Ram, ... :D

All warming up down here in SA, ... as we move into Summer. I ain't looking forward to it, .. as, .. it's gonna be a bloody hot one. I'm gonna melt, ... I'm still acclimatised to Scotland.

You piddling about in 'Sardine Cans' again .. :ping:

Forgot about ' Madcowz' .. our first Webmaster, and gracious host to the SCX Website. Cambridge lad he was, .. if I recall.

Anyway, .. glad to hear from you. Keep safe in dem Subs ... and Remember, .. when in doubt ... 'Hold Your Breath'.

Cheers Mate ...
Tom ... :sunny:

Tom you old Boll*x:lol: My god how good to hear from you! Deep Six, what a man and what a model builder, how the hell could I have forgot him:oops: Oldtimers diesese I suspect. Do you ever hear from him? MBot, thats the lad I was thinking of. Oh, he did some nice work and Te Kaha, he was painting skins long before I even knew what they were, BUT, SCX would never have been what it was without you Tom (No, do not interpret this as me wanting to bear your children:o )

I vainly made an attempt to produce an SCX mod when you went 'south' for a while. I made a bag's of it but you rescused the situation and saved us all:sunny:

But Tom, who was the lad who produced the DB editing tool?

Don't be a bloody stranger mate!

Thomasew
09-10-08, 06:51 PM
Hi Mac, ...

'SCEdit' was developed by 'Ludger Styra' ... can't remember what his forum name was .. :-?

Last chatted with him a couple of years ago, .. I think, .. when he was working on 'DWEdit' for 'Dangerous Waters'. I was also working with him to develop a conversion tool, .. to convert the SCX database to the DW format. Although it worked in principal, ... it still meant that I would have had to check each and every database record, ... and remove or add things as the case may be. At the end of the day, .. I thought it might have been quicker to just start all over again ... and enter each record manually. Alas, .. it would have been a loooooonnnnng and arduous process, .. and one, .. at that time, ... I was in no mind to undertake. :damn:

Anyway, ... it's great to see that the old bunch are still surfacing from time to time .. :)

Hope all is well with ya ...

Cheers fae the noo ..
Tom ...

Good to see you alive and kicking Tom.

Not sure about a steel tube counts as a room, but thats where i'll be "locked" inside for the next few months  :damn: :arrgh!:

Hi guys :) I am still around every now and then, mostly checking if there is an news from Sonalyst about the future of this great genre (altough this is rather hopeless...). This spring I went back into DW a bit and had a blast with it for some months. Otherwise, I spend most of the time with my flightsims.

SCX was a great time, I had lots of fun doing models for it. And I learned a lot in that time.

One of my first posts on subsim.com back in 2002 was wether someone could do something about the horrible 688/688(i) model in Sub Command. Having never even thought about 3d modeling, I would have never believed that I would be the one that would eventualy improve it :)

Suffering a severe attack of nostalgica, I dug out some old pictures of that time:

This was one of my first 3d models ever.

The Alfa was second.

Then came the Akula. These never went anywhere, but were good practise.

This was a second go at the Los Angeles which ended up in SCX. Mapping was done by Ramius and textures by Mcarm if I remember correctly.

This was the SCX model that replaced the Akula I and improved. Mcarm did a fantastic texture for it, unfortunatly I don't have a picture.

One of the Victors that ended up in SCX. In that time I also did the Ohio and a Tango.

Some of the various helicopters I did. Having not yet learned how to map and paint, these were left unfinished along with a lot of other models.

The EH-101 made it in SCX with a texture by Teka Teka, if I remeber correctly.

The Audace model was nice (for those times standard).

It got a horrible map and texture done by me :) I think that was my first one ever.

Some more lousy painting by me on the Bazan. Did that ever go to SCX?

The Virginia CGN was one of the last models I did for SCX, it also failed at my underdeveloped painting skills :)

Man those pictures bring up memorys :)

Great to see these pictures, what a pity you didn't continue working with SC and DW, DW is badly in need of some better models :hmm:

Sonalysts have tolerated what was done with SCX which is why I believe that a continued effort should be made with it.The majority of us play the submarine side of the game so how about improving the graphics even more and adding some of the DW realism.
The original team seems to have resurfaced,SCS have turned their back on us so the field is open.I am sure there are some new forum members that could add their skills to the effort and produce a really great 21st century subsim.

I know I was never part of the modding crew.

But it's good to see Mcarm, Thomasew, and MBot posting again. They and the rest of the SCX crew did some really, really amazing stuff back in the day.

I don't think you can add to SCX from what we have in DW.

The best thing is to help Dr Sid with the community subsim over at CADC. I have done a few models but at the moment don't have the time.

A lot of deepsix's models are in DW now since he gave permission to use them.

IIRC Sonalysts didn't want new player controllable platforms in DW, but as long as they were AI it was OK? Also new, improved 3D models for the existing platforms are OK, right?

There are tons of great models in SCX that would look superb in DW, the standard Kilo model is really bad while the one in SCX looked great.

I wish someone could take the task of porting all SCX models and new units (Non-playable) to DW, that would allow a large amount of new missions....

That task is actually underway, the problem is that the guy(s) who have taken responsibility for that seem to be not on track (I might be wrong here). AFAIK we have permissions from most if not all model contributors for SCX to use their models in the LwAmi Mod. The "only" thing left is the actual work. With the features already in DW (Multistation and so on) plus the stuff from SCX and everything that has been developed for DW till now (legally that is), the resulting mod and thus the game experience will easily surpass SCX (just for clarification, I'm talking bout SCX and not about the SCU tool which was an "AddOn" for it).

LWAMI has permission to use Deepsix's and Xabba's models, which isn't all of them, but it's a very sizeable chunk...

My latest update on this was posted here (http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/showthread.php?t=121071&page=8). There wasn't any response to that (other than your posts about mod integration, OS), so I have nothing new to report on either track.

Sorry I missed that me idiot :damn:

Actually I thought that LWAMI's focus was not as expanded as to include what SCX originally featured.

Anyway, there are some improved 3D models from SCX that would make the game look much better and can be swapped directly with no problems, f.e. the Kilo.

I have a cleaned up version of my Kilo Scope and Binocs, I will see to pack them and send them to you for inclusion in the next LWAMI if there is a chance :ping:

Thanks

I can't speak directly for SCX, but to me it was like an "expansion pack" that added more platforms from other navies, improved graphics, and added a few gameplay changes as well (TA breaks, UTK detonations, etc.). LWAMI was more focused on fixing things that were broken with DW (sound-speed relationship, air defense, helo dipping....). I don't know if "expanded to include" covers what was going on because the mods' changes aren't in a single dimension.

If work resumes, I'll be happy to include it.

Thanks Something just hit me I was playing Call of Duty 2 and noticed that the Binoculars in that game come with dirt and scraches. Wouldn't it be neat if there was a binoc/scope mod for DW that added water drops on the lendse?

It can be done, but the problem is that the 16k colour depth and the lack of Alpha channels would make it look bad and the water drops would also never be translucent :damn:

I just wanted to give a thank you to the SCX crew that popped up. You guys made SC great. Your dedication, time, and attention to detail kept SC alive and gave me many hours of awesome multiplayer action. If I reccall correctly, the diversity of weapons available to the Akula made playing the Russians so awesome.

Thank you for everything, and sorry posting here makes everyone jump at you to make more stuff, lol

This topic made me fire up DW again. Spend the last two evenings hunting subs with the OHP :) The Perry is so much fun to play. Altough sometimes I wish Sonalysts would have made a more dediacted ASW ship instead...

On that note, was there any word from Sonalysts lately? Is there still a chance that they continue with games someday or have they closed this branch forever?

No word I know about, at least not here.
