View Full Version : WIP - Improved Liberty Ship

I decided to rework another of the stock units - this time the Liberty Ship. For such a simple-looking ship the superstructure was extremely hard to do. I am still not entirely happy with it but it looks a lot better than my first attempt. I still need to do some work on the gun platforms, rigging, and deck cranes. Below are some shots of the new model, as well as a picture of the original Liberty Ship.

@ivank - I can't convert ships yet but I hope to learn. If anyone else would like to they are welcome to.

Added a couple of "stingers" to the gun tubs on the bridge.

Damage model testing, using one of the Naval Academy missions. Naval Academy is an excellent mode to test new ships. All changes to the 3d model and skins appear without having to reload the game - you only need to start the mission over again. Also, because not many units need to be generated the missions take a few seconds to load up - very convenient.

I am almost ready to upload the pre-release version. If anyone is interested in beta testing, please let me know. I would especially like users of stock SH3 to test it in Museum to make sure that there are no CTD's - however, any testers would be welcome.

If I may be so bold, and If you ever have any time on your hands(I know thats not likely:doh:)would you consider IAMBL to makeover the blasted C3 large cargo,I consider it to be the ugliest ship in the SH3 roster, and in dire need of fixing?just a thought:hmm::up:

I hear you - that brick has been on my [hit] list since 2005. Extremely jarring to the eye whenever it's in a convoy. I will try to release a version with the main MFM.

And thanks guys - I will try to have it ready tomorrow or midweek next week at the latest.

It looks great, but I have one question. The crosstrees on the masts in the photo, and every photo I can find, look more like the crosstrees on the old model. do you have a picture of one with the cylindrical crosstrees you have on yours?

On top of my list of UNLIKED STOCK MERCHANTs is Medium Merchant -
also named C2. I simply can't look at him:dead:

Well, the recent C4 model looks nothing like a C4, and its tonnage is all wrong. I'd love to see that one fixed too.

Good point. I think I will shrink the crosstrees & steal some of those triangular pieces from the original model's masts when I'm making the final version. Or I may use the triangular bulwarks that I made for some of my other ships.

There is a reworked C3 in the Community Units mod. Looks much better than the original.

The masts have been altered with triangular crosstrees, Steve.

Out of curiosity, does anyone know where the captain and/or the on-duty deck officers would have stood? Did they navigate the ship from that windowed area in the main deckhouse, or did they use the little cabin at the top?

To everyone who expressed interest in beta testing, look out for a link late this evening or by noon tomorrow (Eastern Standard Time).

Thanks.

I could be wrong, but I'm pretty sure the captain and/or Officer-Of-the-Deck would command from the main bridge - the lower area - so as to be in direct contact with the helmsman and lee-helmsman. The small deckhouse was probably for lookouts and signalmen in poor weather.

Here are some good photos and drawings. Unfortunately none of them actually explain any details like that.

So do I, except for one tiny glitch: The very first sentence credits the ancestor of all the American and Canadian Liberty types as 'Donington Court', when in actuality it was 'Dorrington Court.'

Here is a sight that features the Canadian version, which looks a lot more like the original Dorrington Court.

Tested this afternoon:
There is another M01A in MFM. This mod overwrite the old one.
I had to turn M01B to M01A in British roster. Same problem, there is a M01B in MFM.
My Museum stopped working some time ago and I can not test this mod in it.:nope:
Now the gooddies: Ships looks very impressive and realistic in game. No problems: she sailed good and sunk very good :p.
First mission: two eels per ship, one magnetic, one impact. One broken in two and sunk in 3 min., another slowed down and sunk in 25 min.
Second mission: one magnetic eel per ship. One dead on the water, one in fire and slowdown and other folowing her way as nothing. No sinkings.
Third mission: two impact eels per ship. Big explosions, both broken in two and sink in few min.

Thanks.

I am going to rename the final version of the ship. Plus, almost all of the ships in the beta version of the Merchant Fleet Mod have been redone.

BTW, do you think the superstructure looks too low?

coronas
09-07-08, 01:54 PM
No, superstuctures looks very good. Pictures lies; It's 1680x1050 resolution and looks stretched out.
A sugesstion: I don't know if realistic but a camouflage skin like Empress of Britain would looks very well.
Excellent news about MFM. Community is waiting long time for it!

Well, to be honest there are two nationalities (UK and US), and in some cases they use the same designs. Still, there are lots of unique ships in the pack...

I wonder if you might kindly send me the beta testing link as I'm dying to incorporate some of this fantastic work into my movie.
